While I did enjoy the break, in a sport that has very few of them, I am so ready for the 2022 portion of the PGA Tour season. Got my season-long industry draft done, one and done's ready to roll, and it's now time to kick it off(sorry still got NFL in my head). The year starts with a celebration of 39 winners from last season as they all meet in Kapalua for the annual Tournament of Champions. It is a bit of a laid-back extension of the holiday season for some and no better way to get started than a birdie fest in Hawaii. The fairways at the Plantation Course are huge which have generated a 79% driving accuracy average over the last five years. This combined with monster-sized greens has me automatically relying on Strokes Gained: Approach as my top stat in my model. It's definitely not the only way to skin the cat, however, as Harris English hoisted the hardware last year on the back of a monster putting performance(+6.8 strokes). Finally, this is a no-cut event meaning all golfers will play all four rounds, and with a limited field, a stars and scrub build will be very popular. The "scrubs" aren't really scrubs when we are talking about a select group of players who won on Tour last season. No matter what direction you head, you are going to need birdies and lots of them as the winning score has been in the minus 20's in six of the last...

We did get to see Charlie Woods look like the next coming of....well his dad and also got to see him trash talk Justin Thomas which was wildly entertaining. It was Thomas and his father who got the last laugh, however, winning the event. We kick off(sorry NFL still rolling) the 2021 portion of the season with a handshake of sorts as the Tournament of Champions is invite-only to winners from the previous calendar year. This year's field has 42 players including eight of the Top 10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings and each of the last four winners(JT, Xander, DJ, JT). For fantasy, this is a no-cut event so all 42 players will play four rounds and this can lead to a much more viable stars and scrubs strategy. You don't have to worry about a slow start derailing your lineup on Thursday and with a limited field the scrubs are not actually scrubs. Before getting into the picks, let's take a look at the course, scorecard, and some of my key stats. Chris also provides a DFS PGA Cheatsheet which looks at odds, form, course history, and much more. Sentry Tournament of Champions After a long off-season(not really) we are back and ready to kick off the 2020 portion of the season in style. It starts with a trip to Hawaii for the Sentry Tournament of Champions. The field is open to all winners from the previous season and this year we get 33-man field led by Xander Schauffele, Dustin Johnson, and Justin Thomas who have combined to win the last three events here. We will also get to see the red-hot John Rahm who has jumped up to #3 in the Official World Golf Rankings since the Tour Championship with two wins and a runner-up on the Euro Tour. The course is fairly unique in that it is a Par 73 with just three Par 3's, 11 Par 4's, and four Par 5's. The other unique part that leads to some of the low scoring is that six of the 11 Par 4 holes are under 400 yards. The par 5's are where most of the scoring comes from, however, with three of them coming in or under 555 yards. Even the beastly 663-yard par 5 18th hole plays almost a half-stroke under par. The event quickly turns into a birdie fest with wide fairways, huge greens, and normally excellent weather. Because of this, I am keeping my model fairly simple this week and looking at Strokes Gained: Approach with an emphasis on Proximity with the giant green complexes. After that, I am heavy on Birdie or Better %, Par 5 Birdie or Better %, and Par 4 scoring which can help players separate themselves as they are the hardest holes on the course(still not that hard). With that, let's jump into the picks.
