The field got a little weaker on Monday with Bryson DeChambeau dropping out with wrist soreness. With that, the field is led by last week's winner Cameron Smith who joined a shortlist of players who have won both Hawaii events(Furyk, Els, Singh, ZJ, JT) and also broke into the OWGR Top 10 for the first time in his young career. The host course, as it has been since the inaugural event back in 1971, is Waialae Country Club. It will be a much different test than last week in that we move from a Par 73 with wide fairways and some of the largest greens on Tour to a Par 70 with tight fairways that include several doglegs and average-sized greens. It's very much a positioning style golf course and for that I will rely heavily on Strokes Gained: Ball Striking in my model. The second stat I will be looking at in my model this week is Par 4 scoring which becomes a focus on a Par 70 with just two Par 5's. Looking at last year, it also had an extremely high correlation to success. Finally, the other main stat in my model is Birdie or Better % as the winning score has averaged right around -20 which even includes the very windy 2020 event in which Cameron Smith won. This year's forecast looks very similar to last week which saw winds...

The PGA Tour stays in Hawaii this week but jumps north to O'ahu Island for the Sony Open and the first full-field event of 2021. That field is led by three of the World's Top 10 golfers(Webb Simpson, Patrick Reed, Adam Scott) but is a little weaker overall with just 17 of the World's Top 50 teeing it up this week. The host course, Waialae Country Club, is a Par 70 listed at 7,044 yards on the scoreboard. The fairways may not be nearly as wide as last week but the cut-makers are still hitting over 65% fairways on average over the last five years. This also elevates the average GIR%(around 70%) on a yearly basis which then also produces some very low scores. Outside of last year when the first two rounds were very windy leading to a lower -11 winning score, the winner has made it to at least -17 in seven straight events. For fantasy, remember with this full-field event, we have a cut of Top 65 and ties after the first two rounds. For cash games, this means we are back to trying to get all six golfers through to the weekend which I like trying to do with a balanced build. In GPP, we are also going to need 6/6 to cash anything substantial but construction can be much different as we want to maximize our upside which also can present more risk. Before getting into the picks lets look at the course and a few of my core stats in my model. The Course Waialae Country Club Par 70 - 7,044 Yards Greens - Bermuda **Click the...

Sony Open After a very exciting start to 2020 with the Tournament of Champions, the PGA Tour now heads to North a bit to Waialae Country Club for the Sony Open and the first full-field event of the year. Overall, the field is on the weaker side with just 15 of the Top 50 players but is headlined by World #4 and former winner of this event, Justin Thomas and joining him is the defending winner, Matt Kuchar. Like it has since the tournament began back in 1965, Waialae Country Club will host this year's event. The course is a 7,044 yard Par 70 setup with four Par 3's, 12 Par 4's, and just two Par 5's. The fairways are smaller than average and with the combination of some doglegs, creates a lot less than driver strategies off the tee. Even with that strategy for most of the golfers, the average fairways hit over the last five years is under 55% which puts some emphasis on Rough Proximity as the average Greens in Regulation hit is still over 70% over the last five years. With the additional Par 4's and less Par 5's on this Par 70 track, I will be focusing on Par 4 scoring and Birdie or Better % with an average winning score around or lower than -20 every single year. The other thing to pay attention to here at Waialae is the weather as it is one of the biggest defenses. As of Tuesday morning, the pre-cut rounds on Thursday and Friday look to be the most brutal with steady winds over 30 mph both days. This has me looking very closely at players who play well in windy conditions and to do this I use the tools over at FantasyNationalGolfClub. With all that info, let's now take a look at the course, top stats, and dig into the picks.
