The Course Detroit Golf Club Par 72 - 7,340 Yards Greens - Bent/Poa Previous Winners 2020 - Bryson DeChambeau(-23) 2019 - Nate Lashley(-25) This week the PGA Tour heads back to Detroit Golf Club for a third straight year for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. It is a weaker field overall and top-loaded with Bryson DeChambeau(#6) and Patrick Reed(#9) the only two Top 10 players in the World rankings teeing it up this week. The course is a classic tree-lined Donald Ross design that forces a lot of shot-making with a pretty even split of doglegs to the left and right. While we were mostly guessing at correlated stats over the last two years, we finally have a nice accumulation of stats to look at. The first thing that stands out is Par 4 scoring which has had a very high correlation to finishing position both years(relative to other courses). On top of that, Strokes Gained: Approach had a higher correlation than Off the Tee when looking at Ball Striking. Add in the winning score in the -20's both years and I am leaning heavily on SG: Approach, Par 4 scoring, and Birdie or Better % in my model this week. With that said, let's jump in and look at a few core plays in my player pool this week. Top Tier Targets Bryson DeChambeau World Golf Ranking (#6) Vegas Odds (7.5/1) Draftkings ($11,400) FanDuel ($12,200) I am not thrilled about the top tier outside of Bryson and Patrick Reed so that is where I will be loading up this week. You may not be as familiar with the event name or course as both made their first appearance on Tour last season. The biggest difference this week vs. the three weeks prior is the field strength. We have consistently seen 5-10 of the World's best in these fields but have just three this week led by Webb Simpson(#6), Patrick Reed(#7), and Bryson DeChambeau(#10). That's right. Webb Simpson who withdrew from the last week's event with an "abundance of caution" is back and coming off his 7th career win two weeks ago at the RBC Heritage. Looking back at last year's event, it was an absolute birdie fest out there with Nate Lashley hoisting the hardware with a winning score of -25 as the course ranked 42nd of 49 courses in terms of difficulty averaging almost two shots under par. With some amazing looking forecasts on tap this week, we could once again see a winning score in the -20's. There is a chance it could be lower as the course crew did grow out the rough to a posted average of 4" after sitting at about 3.5" last year. Even with that info, the portion of the field that made the cut averaged 65% driving accuracy with the Top 10 averaging over 70%. The key is going to be the approach game and those players not just hitting more of them(GIR) but hitting it closer(Proximity) will be...

Rocket Mortgage Classic This week the PGA Tour will visit Detroit, Michigan for the first time for a brand new event, the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The host will be the Detroit Golf Club which was founded in 1899 and started out as a six-hole course that has evolved over 100 years into a 36-hole club including the Donald Ross-designed North and South courses. This is where we will be concentrating our time this week as the team at Detroit Golf Club has meshed the two together to feature a new 18-hole layout that will be played by the Tour players this week. Like most Donald Ross course's, it is unique as he used the land available to him to create the course rather than moving dirt to fit his design. Looking at some Google Earth images and watching some videos on the course here is my breakdown. It is a tree-lined course with some very tight driving holes and bunkers in key landing zones off the tee. That combined with rough that is projected to be around 3.5" long(higher than Tour average) puts emphasis on the Off the Tee game, especially accuracy. My guess would be that the field will average about 55-60% fairways hit for the week. With four of the 10 Par 4's coming under 400 yards, we will also likely see some "Less than Driver" strategies off the tee as well to ensure position for the second shot. The next challenge is the approach shot which, at times, will come from some uneven lies with the undulation throughout the course. The greens also present a challenge as they are slightly smaller than Tour average and also very undulated and expected to be around 12-12.5 on the stimpmeter.
