The course opened back in 1936 and has played host to many big events from Women's and Men's Amateur Championships, to US Opens, Tour Championship, and of course the PGA Championship which was last played here in 2007 when Tiger Woods took home the Wanamaker Trophy. This year's PGA Championship will play a bit different than in 2007 as the course has been renovated by Gil Hanse to both bring back some of the original design as well as modernize the course for today's game. The first thing golfers will notice is the widening of the fairways 10-15 feet on average which should lead to a lot more drivers off the tee which was not the case back in 2007 when we saw a ton of "less than driver" strategies. You still won't want to get too far offline, however, as the rough will be gnarly and will make hitting the greens very, very difficult. Hitting greens in regulation will already have its challenges as one of the other big changes to the course involves the greens which once funneled balls into the middle. Those greens, for the most part, were shaved down around the edges which will now funnel balls off the green. From a stat model perspective, it will take an elite or near-elite all-around game to get it done this week but...

The Course Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Par 72 - 7,876 Yards Greens - Seaside Paspalum **Click the image above to see a hole by hole breakdown from PGATour.com** Previous Five PGA Championship Winners 2020@ TPC Harding Park - Collin Morikawa(-13) 2019 @ Bethpage Black - Brooks Koepka(-8) 2018 @ Bellerive CC - Brooks Koepka(-16) 2017 @ Quail Hollow Club - Justin Thomas(-8) 2016 @ Baltusrol GC - Jimmy Walker(-14) The second major of 2021 is here and the anticipation has been growing. With a rotating course schedule, this year's PGA returns to the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island for the first time since 2012 when Rory McIlroy roared to a -13 winning score and eight-stroke victory. His winning score did the course no justice as he made it look much easier than it was with only 20 players shooting under par with Rory the only one reaching double-digits. The course is a Pete Dye masterpiece and one of the toughest tests there is in golf. It is a classic Pete Dye design that forces players to be creative and really think out every single shot. Unlike other Pete Dye tracks, however, it adds a ton of distance and listed at over 7,800 yards, is the longest major championship venue in history. The course is somewhat of a Links-style course as all 18 holes are in view of the ocean and the winds unpredictable, inconsistent, and can wreak havoc on a golf round. The big difference with Kiawah Island and other Links courses is that several of the greens here are raised up taking away the traditional bump and run approach shots that we see at other Links venues. This adds a whole other level of difficulty if the winds play a factor. Instead of me trying to describe the course, have a look for yourself in this...

We have talked for several weeks on the podcast how these "return to golf" fields have been "major-like" in strength and this week we finally get the first major championship of the 2020 calendar year. In fact, it is the first major in 383 days and the first major on American soil in 446 days. Ya, I have been counting! That's right folks, it's PGA Championship week and each of the Top 10 and 48 of the Top 50 players in the world will tee it up at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, California. In terms of course history, we really don't have much to go from this week as the last time this course was used on the PGA Tour was the WGC Match Play event back in 2015. Rory McIlroy beat Gardy Woodland in the final while Jim Furyk beat Danny Willett in the 3rd place match. I am not putting much into this at all mostly because the course will paly much different this time around. For this major, the fairways were narrowed and the rough has been grown out(3.5" or more in spots) which will put a lot more emphasis on driving accuracy or if using Fantasy National, Fairways Gained. The next thing that stands out right away here at TPC Harding Park are the par 4's. As it is listed on the scorecard, there are seven of the 10 Par 4's over 450 yards, five over 470 yards, and one over 500 yards. That distance combined with the importance of accuracy off the tee is going to lead to a ton of long approach shots in the...

Grab your copy today and edge out the competition. 100th PGA Championship Welcome back golf fans. We have reached the final major of the season as the top players and club professionals will tee it up at the 100th PGA Championship this week. This is another major championship that rotates courses and this year it will be played at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri. The club itself dates back to 1897 and saw a relocation in 1955 and was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. but the notable thing for researching this week is that it was fully renovated in 2005 by Rees Jones. If you click the course picture below you can check out a flyover video of the course to give you an excellent perspective of the design and what it will take to win here at Bellerive. The first thing to note when looking at the scorecard is that the course is very long and two of the member Par 5's(Hole #4 and Hole #10) have been converted to long Par 4's which makes the course a Par 70 this week. Despite the course being long, it doesn't necessarily mean we are going to target only bombers as the course is very strategically set up. It starts with well-placed bunkers in landing zones that will make the longer hitters think twice about going for broke off the tee and the fairways also narrow dramatically the farther down you go. You will also notice when watching the flyover video that 12 of the holes are doglegs left which calls for a right to left ball flight(draw) for right-handed hitters and a left to right ball flight(fade) for left-handed hitters. The greens are very large with different levels(quadrants) which will also put a ton of emphasis on not just Strokes Gained: Approach but also Proximity. Club selection will also be huge on the approach shots...
