The 148th OPEN Championship The final major of the 2018-19 season has finally arrived as the top players in the world head to Royal Portrush Golf Club for the 148th OPEN Championship, and for the first time since 1951. While we have no course history at this event to pull from, the European Tour did play the Irish Open at Portrush in 2012. There won't be much to draw from that when breaking down stats as there are two brand new holes(#7, #8) which replace the old 17th and 18th holes. Those are not the only changes to the course as there are five new greens, eight new tee boxes(to help add some length and strategy), and 10 new bunkers. Even with the those added bunkers it is still the lowest bunker count(58) of any OPEN venue but don't think it will be out of the player's heads. From looking at images and hearing what players are saying, the difficulty level will be elevated if you find yourself in one of these bunkers. Like any "true" Links course, the biggest defense is always the weather and no tournament is more important to pay attention to this narrative right up to(or close to) lock. The fairways are slightly wider than PGA Tour average taking away the need for accuracy a bit the other factor besides wind that can change that is the thicker than normal rough we see at the OPEN. Early reports are showing players using a "less than driver" strategy to ensure fairway hit and shot at the greens. As of now, I am simply looking at Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, especially in the short-term coming into this week. Looking at the projected approach shot distances, it looks like golfers will see plenty of mid-iron approach with six of the Par 4's falling between 400 and 450 yards mixed with...

The time has come for the third Major Championship of the season and this time coming to you from Carnoustie Golf Links, the host of the 147th OPEN Championship. Carnoustie has been a venue for the OPEN since 1931 and this marks the eighth time it has been hosted here with Padraig Harrington the most recent winner here back in 2007. The course is often referred to as "Carnastie" and for good reason, as it is widely considered the toughest test of all OPEN venues. Most of you might remember the 1999 event when Jean Van De Velde went into the final hole three clear of second place and needing only a double-bogey to hoist the Claret Jug. Well, he ended up making a triple forcing a three-way playoff that saw Paul Lawrie hoist the hardware with a winning score of +6. From reports early in the week as players get in practice rounds at Carnoustie, it appears we are going to see a baked-out course, at least on the fairways. Check out some of these tweets. Just hit one 427 on 18 @TheOpen .. Guys would be hitting it in the burn in front of green 450+.. Carnoustie is baked out but greens are pure.. Never seen an Open this firm.. Will be an awesome week if it stays like this.. pic.twitter.com/AUXyPGF4iu — Brandt Snedeker (@BrandtSnedeker) July 14, 2018   This is @DJohnsonPGA on the 513 yard par five 14th at Carnoustie. He hit driver-wedge to the green. Yesterday he hit a drive into the burn on 18 which is 473 yds from the tee. The course is brown, baked out and fast for @TheOpen. pic.twitter.com/O4PfmKg88l — Todd Lewis (@ToddLewisGC) July 15, 2018   Whoa! Driver, wedge into a Par 5 is pretty crazy. On this long course, the conditions definitely...

The Open Championship St. Andrews Golf Club(Old Course) - Fife, Scotland Par 72, 7,297 Yards The John Deere Classic came to a close this weekend with another Jordan Spieth victory. After starting the tournament off with an Even Par 71 on Thursday, he stormed out of the gates on Friday shooting a 7 under 64 to vault up the leaderboard. He followed that up with a career best 61 on Saturday to take the lead going into Sunday. He faltered to start his round Sunday with two bogeys in his first three holes. As the afternoon wore on there were multiple players contending for the lead and it looked very possible there would be a another playoff on the PGA Tour. Spieth ended up making four birdies in his final six holes to force a playoff with Tom Gillis. Spieth came out on top on the second playoff hole to collect his 4th win of the 2015 season. He will carry some great form and momentum into the Open Championship at St. Andrews next week. Another golfer who will carry momentum into the Open Championship will be Rickie Fowler who took down the Scottish Open this weekend. There were about 40 players who were in the Scottish Open this weekend who will be playing in the Open at St. Andrews. Why is this important you ask? With little course history for most of the players I will be closely analyzing a few tournaments to get a feel for players who are well suited on links courses. The Scottish Open is one of those links courses I will be looking at as four times in the past the winner has gone on to win the Open Championship. It is also a nice indicator of current form having a players most recent event being played on a links course. Other players with good Scottish Open results are Matt Kuchar(T2), Joost Luiten(T4), Marc Warren(T4), Luke Donald(T7), Victor Dubuisson(T10). Be sure to purchase my cheatsheets to see how all the players in the field did at the Scottish Open. Now onto the course this week. The 144th Open Championship...
