This next couple of weeks presents a very interesting set of circumstances as there will be back to back events played on the same course. With the John Deere Classic canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the PGA Tour stepped up and created the Workday Charity Open to be played at the Jack-Nicklaus-designed Muirfield Village Golf Club. We get another strong field this week headlined by five of the Top 10 players in the World in Jon Rahm(#2), Justin Thomas(#5), Brooks Koepka(#6), Patrick Cantlay(#8), and Patrick Reed(#9). In all there are 23 of the Top 50 players in the world and only consists of six players(Chase Koepka, Kevin Stadler, Jerry Kelly, Brandon Wu, Nicky Taylor, JB Holmes) who have yet to tee it up since the Tour returned. With Muirfield Village being used annually for the Memorial, we do have a ton of course history to look at but things won't be identical to what we have seen in the past. There are new tee boxes on three holes(#8, #11, #15) which have added about 70 yards to the scorecard. There have also been new fairways bunkers added on six holes, as well. Per the quote below, it appears the course WILL play a bit different not from this week to next but also day to day to help keep it in great shape as we have never had back to back PGA Tour events on the same course. Looking...

You may not be as familiar with the event name or course as both made their first appearance on Tour last season. The biggest difference this week vs. the three weeks prior is the field strength. We have consistently seen 5-10 of the World's best in these fields but have just three this week led by Webb Simpson(#6), Patrick Reed(#7), and Bryson DeChambeau(#10). That's right. Webb Simpson who withdrew from the last week's event with an "abundance of caution" is back and coming off his 7th career win two weeks ago at the RBC Heritage. Looking back at last year's event, it was an absolute birdie fest out there with Nate Lashley hoisting the hardware with a winning score of -25 as the course ranked 42nd of 49 courses in terms of difficulty averaging almost two shots under par. With some amazing looking forecasts on tap this week, we could once again see a winning score in the -20's. There is a chance it could be lower as the course crew did grow out the rough to a posted average of 4" after sitting at about 3.5" last year. Even with that info, the portion of the field that made the cut averaged 65% driving accuracy with the Top 10 averaging over 70%. The key is going to be the approach game and those players not just hitting more of them(GIR) but hitting it closer(Proximity) will be...

For the second straight week the players will be faced with a Pete Dye classic, this time it will be TPC River Highlands for the Travelers Championship. The course is a Par 70 listed at 6,841 yards on the scorecard and in comparison to the last two weeks, has slightly larger fairways and it shows with an average driving accuracy above 65% over the last five years. You definitely don't want to be missing many fairways, however, as the rough can get long and gnarly and is consistently around 3.5 inches. While a complete tee to green game is required, Strokes Gained: Approach is my top-weighted stat in the model closely followed by Par 4 scoring which has also shown heavy correlation to success here when looking back at pasts events. This course, while also on the short side like the last two weeks, has seen more longer players(driving distance) have success in the past(see Bubba Watson). An all bombers lineup is likely not going to get you a GPP win but don't be afraid to use them just because of the...

We were not only treated to an elite field but one heck of a finish on Sunday that had started with 14 players all within three strokes of the lead. It was Xander Schauffele with the one-stroke lead being chased by an elite group led by Rory McIlroy, Gary Woodland, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose, Bryson DeChambeau and 18/36 hole leader, Harold Varner III. Xander ended up missing a short putt on 17 leading to a bogey and eventually missing a playoff but one stroke. it turned out being Morikawa and Berger going to extra holes where a short miss by Morikawa led to a Daniel Berger hoisting the hardware, his third career win. The re-structured schedule takes the PGA Tour to Harbour Town Golf Links this week for the RBC Heritage which was originally set to take place back in April. The course is a Pete Dye design which, like last week, puts emphasis on precision and accuracy much more than distance. It shows in the results as each of the last five winners(farthest I went back) averaged 280 yards or less in terms of driving distance for the week. In fact, during those last five events, the Top 10 finishers averaged between 280...

Head on over to my Patreon Page GOLF IS BACK! Ok, what I really mean is that PGA is back as I will admit I enjoyed researching and learning about the Outlaw Tour and Golden State Tour's. I am a stats junkie, however, so getting the full PGA Tour stats database back in our favor has me jumping up and down like my dad in a Harley Davidson shop. Part two of the 2020 season takes the Tour to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas for the Charles Schwab Challenge. The fans are not the only ones excited and it shows by the elite field consisting of each of the World's Top 5 players(McIlroy, Rahm, Koepka, Thomas, Johnson). Overall, there are 17 of the Top 25 and 37 of the Top 50 players in the World teeing up this week at Colonial. While the name has changed, this event has been played at Colonial going all the way back to 1970. The course is a Par 70 posted at 7,209 yards on the scorecard and is much more of a precision style course than a bombers paradise. Tight, tree-lined fairways with well-placed fairway bunkers make placement off the tee key to have access to the smaller than average bentgrass greens. One of the biggest defenses of the course is the wind and it shows in the inconsistent winning scores over the years ranging from -10 to -21 over the past 10 years. Twice it has ranked Top 10 in difficulty but on average is more around Top15 in difficulty. From a fantasy standpoint, I will be looking at more of a long term model this week with the long lay-off but there are a few stats that I will be concentrating on and it starts with Par 4 scoring as there are 12 on this Par 70 setup. Seven of those par 4's come in the 400-450 yard...
