This year's event may feel a bit different with the TOUR Championship and 2019-20 season wrapping up two weeks ago but one thing remains the same. This championship will be the toughest test these golfers will face all year. The venue rotates each year and we are in for a treat in 2020 as the U.S. Open shifts back to Winged Foot Golf Club for the sixth time and the first since 2006 where Phil Mickelson gifted the trophy to Geoff Ogilvy after double-bogeying the 72nd hole. Winged Foot is an absolute beast and best put in two famous quotes: "The golf course gets tough on the first tee and never gets any easier” Jack Nicklaus “We’re not trying to humiliate the best players in the world. We’re simply trying to identify them” said USGA president Sandy Tatum back in 1974 I don't quite remember the course in detail from 2006(cut me some slack, that was 14 years ago and I forget what I ate for breakfast yesterday) but reading player quotes, watching the flyover video, and seeing reports on social media tells me this will be a bloodbath. The fairways are narrow, the rough looks impossible to play out of, and even the "safe" landing zones off the tee are protected by tons fo bunkering and/or large trees that will block the second shot if not placed in the correct spot. Then you have the greens in which Jack Nicklaus once said are "the most difficult set of greens I've ever seen". They...

Without the Ryder Cup happening this year we immediately jump back into action and start the 2020-21 season with a trip to Silverado Resort & Spa for the Safeway Open. While we have been treated to some terrific fields since the return of golf(that includes the non WGC's, Majors, and Playoff events), this is not one of those weeks. There are no players ranked inside the Top 25 and only five who rank Top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Outside that Top 50 but #1 in our hearts this week is Phil Mickelson who is coming off a win in his very first Champions Tour event. This event has changed names(previously Frys.com Open) and has been played at Silverado Resort & Spa since the 2015-16 season giving us six years of course history. The fairways at Silverado are narrow which has produced a low driving accuracy number which sits around 50% each year. This doesn't mean we need accuracy guys mostly because the rough is not nearly as penal(around 2.5-3") which shows as the average GIR over the same sample size is between 65% and 70%. Looking at the hole composition, nine fo the 10 par 4 holes are under 450 yards so when breaking down a player's iron game, we are most likely going to see a ton of approaches coming in the mid ranges(125-175 yards). All four par 5's are reachable in two by almost everyone in the field and this has led to an average around 30 eagles per event. For the most part, I will be looking at players who are trending in the ball striking and...

Whether or not you made bank with betting or DFS last week, we were witness to one of the best finishes to a tournament in a long time. Dustin Johnson, looking for back to back wins, made an incredible putt on the 72nd hole to force a playoff then Rahm one-upped him with a 66-foot bomb on the same 18th hole in the playoff. It was a crazy four-day test for the Top 70 in the standings and DJ and Rahm were two of just five players to shoot under par for the event. If you missed out on viewing, here is a quick final round highlight package you NEED to watch. The Top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings now head to East Lake Golf Club for the Tour Championship. For the second straight year, a new format will be used and you need to understand it before constructing any lineups. Essentially, the Tour wanted to get rid of the two leaderboards for the final event and complex formulas needed to track who has a chance and also limit the event to one winner. Dustin Johnson who earned the #1 seed will start the tournament with a score of -10 while Jon Rahm who is 2nd will start at -8. Again, to see what score all players will start at, check out the format and FedEx Cup Playoff info page. What this type of setup gives us is a much different salary structure on both sites. The players starting outside the Top 20 will come very cheap as they have a lot more strokes to make up to get to the top...

The PGA Tour Playoffs are underway but if you just looked at last week's winner Dustin Johnson(-30) and the gap between him and second(11 shots) you might have thought he was playing in a Korn Ferry tour event. This was not the case as he followed up a near record-breaking Friday round(60) with a 64/63 on the weekend which came a week after his T2 at the PGA Championship and only one month removed from three straight rounds of 78 or worse. It has been a roller coaster ride for DJ, to say the least, and now his focus shifts towards winning his first FedEx Cup Championship. The second of three playoff events takes the Top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings to Olympia Fields Country Club for the BMW Championship. We can throw course history out the window this week as the last time the course was used for competition among anyone in this field was the 2015 US Amateur where Bryson Dechambeau beat out the field which included Jon Rahm and Maverick McNealy who are also in this week's field. Before that, it last hosted the US Open back in 2003 when Jim Furyk took home the hardware. Olympia Fields North Course is a tree-lined par 70 setup listed at 7,366 yards on the scorecard. The course has multiple defenses starting off the tee with narrow fairways, thick rough(4+ inches), and tons of bunkers(85 in total). The greens are slightly below average in size(6,000 sq ft) and like the fairways, are all guarded by lots of bunkers. Water is another defense of the course with it coming into play on...

Last week's Wyndham Championship was the final event for players to play their way into the Top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings and that is exactly what Jim Herman did as he came into last week ranked 192nd and is now 54th. He was only one of three(Shane Lowry, Zach Johnson the others) to go into the Wyndham outside the Top 125 and play their way in. The next focus for the players will not just be making the cut of Top 65 and ties at the Northern Trust this week, but also making the cut of Top 70 that will move on to the BMW Championship next week. As you would expect with a playoff event, the field is stacked with each of the Top 10 and 40 of the Top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings. With a loaded field, we get more soft salaries and a set up like the majors which makes stars and scrubs much easier but it also does the same for balanced builds as the quality of players you get for the same salary as a regular tournament is much higher. From a statistical perspective, I am keying in on three main stats this week. With a track record of winning scores in the -15 to -20 range, Birdie or Better % will be very important this week. Second, the roughs are not as penal and the field at TPC Boston has averaged around 65% the last five years at the Dell Technologies Championship/Deutsch Bank Championship. This leads me to...
