DFSR’s Daily Fantasy MLB Podcast for FanDuel & DraftKings Wednesday 7/19/17
DFSR's Daily Fantasy MLB Podcast for FanDuel & DraftKings Wednesday 7/19/17 DFSR’s Doug Norrie and James Davis take to the podcast to discuss a full day of baseball action for FanDuel and DraftKings. There’s a ton to discuss with multiple slates going for both sites. For the early slate they discuss Dan Straily in a good matchup against the Phillies. There are other names to consider like James Paxton even though he’s in a rough matchup against the Astros (though they are now without Carlos Correa). For stacking early it’s all the Rockies on DraftKings though on FanDuel early you can strongly consider the Cubs and Yankees in good spots. On the evening slate they discuss the differences between Jacob deGrom and Zack Greinke with the latter being slightly cheaper. Also some Sonny Gray talk and the solid spots for the Orioles and J.D. Martinez-infused D-Backs. Be sure to subscribe through iTunes or Stitcher DFSR's Daily Fantasy MLB Podcast for FanDuel & DraftKings Wednesday...
DFSR Midseason MLB Awards – Biggest Bust
DFSR Midseason MLB Awards - Biggest Bust Welcome to the Major League All-Star Break, where your only baseball fix over the next few days will be a rather meaningless exhibition game and a batting practice contest. So we thought we'd take the time to weigh in on our mid-season awards (both superlative and not so much). In April, hope springs eternal and all we can think about is the season ahead. It's a time when all of our hitters will go yard and our pitchers will deal gas. But it isn't all good vibes for everyone. Some guys have spent a first half of the season crushing our dreams. Let's take a look at the midseason's biggest busts. Now’s your chance to get DFSR Pro with MLB Optimal Lineups, Projections and Player Cards. We've got you completely covered. James Davis - DFSR CoFounder and CEO, drops knowledge on the DFSR MLB Podcast Justin Verlander - DET 5-6 , 8.43 K/9, 4.73 ERA / 5.03 xFIP I'm reading this award as "guy who has lived up to expectations the worst," rather than worst overall player. For me, that guy is Verlander. He has declined in every conceivable pitching category this season, but let's dive into some specifics. He's shaved his K rate by 1.6 per 9 innings while also adding more than 2 walks per 9 innings. He's on pace to pitch 30 fewer innings this season in spite of being on pace for the same number of starts. His 5.03 xFIP is the worst of his career by far. The weirdest thing about Verlander? He's actually throwing harder across the board than he has in years. His fastball is averaging its fastest average velocity (95 MPH) than it has since 2011. The big difference is that all of his pitches are faster, meaning he has a smaller spread in average velocity from his fastball and his change-up and curveball. I'd guess he's catching batters off balance a lot more, and since he's missing a lot more as well, this has put him into a lot of sticky situations. There's hope, though. If Verlander turns around the walk rate, in particular, I think he can return to form. Whether he will or not is a mystery, though, so Verlander is plainly a "wait and see" guy for me going forward. DFSR Midseason MLB Awards – Cy Young
DFSR Midseason MLB Awards - Cy Young Welcome to the Major League All-Star Break, where your only baseball fix over the next few days will be a rather meaningless exhibition game and a batting practice contest. So we thought we'd take the time to weigh in on our mid-season awards (both superlative and not so much). Of course in baseball, the Cy Young Award is sectioned off between the American League and the National League. We don't have time for that kind of finite drilling down. Instead let's just assume Cy Young means "Best Pitcher" and leave it at that. Isn't life easier when it's simple? Now’s your chance to get DFSR Pro with MLB Optimal Lineups, Projections and Player Cards. Or try a free trial of our base package with projections for every player. James Davis - DFSR CoFounder and CEO, drops knowledge on the DFSR MLB Podcast Max Scherzer - WAS 10-5 , 12.13 K/9 2.10 ERA / 3.07 xFIP So I think Sale is the Cy Young this year, but since Durell already yoinked him out of consideration when we called dibs on these guys, I'll go ahead and make Scherzer's case on the NL side. Scherzer has improved upon last year's Cy Young campaign by tacking on a full K/9 to his already elite rates, and his 12.16 K/9 is a hair behind Sale's for the league lead. He's shaved his walk rate under 2.0/9, and continues to expertly navigate the dance of allowing a lot of fly balls while not allowing a lot of home runs. Why is this important? It depresses his BABIP. He's held his opponents under a .270 BABIP in each season since joining the Nationals, and paltry 26.5% hard contact rate is his best since 2011. He's also the same old workhouse once again, leading the NL in innings pitched per start. If you want to go Kershaw here, I think you should check yourself. Kershaw's only been better than Scherzer when it comes to walk rate, and I'd ignore his xFIP advantage. The fact is that Scherzer's HR/FB ratio is very likely sustainable, and xFIP isn't telling the whole tale. While he can't touch Sale in terms of overall production, having separate Cy Young Awards for the AL and the NL means he can win also! Everyone gets a trophy!! DFSR Midseason MLB Awards – MVP (Non-Aaron Judge Division)
DFSR Midseason MLB Awards - MVP (Non-Aaron Judge Division) Welcome to the Major League All-Star Break, where your only baseball fix over the next few days will be a rather meaningless exhibition game and a batting practice contest. So we thought we'd take the time to weigh in on our mid-season awards (both superlative and not so much). For our first one we are taking a look at MVP. Now, we don’t suspect there’s much debate over who the real winnger should be over the first half of the season. Aaron Judge is putting up borderline historic numbers, made even more impressive (if possible) by the fact that he’s doing it in his rooking season. Judge is crushing to a 1.100+ OPS, already has 28 home runs and owns a .465 wOBA. Had Mike Trout not sustained the thumb injury then we’d likely be debating the two (and I suppose there’s time for Trout to put in work over the second half of the season. But he’s got some catchup up to do. Judge has been as lucky as he's been good (.400+ BABIP, 40% HR/FB rate) but even with some regression he's still at the top of the list. All this being said, Judge (at least in this staff’s opinion) is the clear MVP of the first half of the season. What we present here are the current runner-ups. James Davis - DFSR CoFounder and CEO, drops knowledge on the DFSR MLB Podcast Jose Altuve - HOU .347 / .417 / .551 - 4.4 WAR 13 HR / 50 RBI / 18 SB It may be a little strange to see Altuve topping this list, given that his 2nd-base counterpart Daniel Murphy has him edged out in their much ballyhooed batting title race at the moment, but follow me for a second. First of all, position scarcity matters, and Altuve's .400 wOBA at an offensive position where the 5th highest guy has a .354 wOBA just means more than doing it at a position like first base. For Altuve, his case is a lot more well-rounded than many early season MVP candidates. He's an offensive force to be sure, but he and Murphy have been nearly...
DFSR’s Daily Fantasy MLB Podcast for FanDuel & DraftKings Friday 7/7/17
DFSR's Daily Fantasy MLB Podcast for FanDuel & DraftKings Friday 7/7/17 DFSR’s Doug Norrie and James Davis take to a Friday podcast breaking down a full slate of baseball for FanDuel and DraftKings. Before they get started Doug calls out James for his claim yesterday that Josh Tomlin wouldn’t be part of the top DraftKings GPP lineups last night. Then they break down pitchers starting with Max Scherzer who’s been one (if not the) best pitchers in the majors this season. But there are a lot of other solid arms today as well. They talk about Zack Greinke, Carlos Martinez, James Paxton, Drew Pomeranz and even Nick Pivetta. For the bats there’s obviously a game in Coors with a high run line on the Rockies’ side of the ball against Derek Holland. The Yankees are also in a great spot against a broken Junior Guerra. All of this and more on a full Friday MLB podcast.
