We have talked for several weeks on the podcast how these "return to golf" fields have been "major-like" in strength and this week we finally get the first major championship of the 2020 calendar year. In fact, it is the first major in 383 days and the first major on American soil in 446 days. Ya, I have been counting! That's right folks, it's PGA Championship week and each of the Top 10 and 48 of the Top 50 players in the world will tee it up at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, California. In terms of course history, we really don't have much to go from this week as the last time this course was used on the PGA Tour was the WGC Match Play event back in 2015. Rory McIlroy beat Gardy Woodland in the final while Jim Furyk beat Danny Willett in the 3rd place match. I am not putting much into this at all mostly because the course will paly much different this time around. For this major, the fairways were narrowed and the rough has been grown out(3.5" or more in spots) which will put a lot more emphasis on driving accuracy or if using Fantasy National, Fairways Gained. The next thing that stands out right away here at TPC Harding Park are the par 4's. As it is listed on the scorecard, there are seven of the 10 Par 4's over 450 yards, five over 470 yards, and one over 500 yards. That distance combined with the importance of accuracy off the tee is going to lead to a ton of long approach shots in the...

As with any WGC event, that means this is a no-cut event with a limited field but an elite one at that. It includes nine of the Top 10 and 44 of the Top 50 players in the World Golf Rankings. This is the second WGC event hosted by TPC Southwind and before that the course hosted the annual FedEx St. Jude Classic going all the way back to 1989. The WGC event last year played as the 25th hardest course on Tour in terms of average scoring while the last four years(2015-2018) of the St. Jude played much harder. The course didn't change and the only real difference was the strength and size of the field. Brooks Koepka took him this event last year with a winning score of -16 and was one of just four players who tallied 20+ birdies. The fairways...

With a World Golf Championship event next week and the PGA Championship the following week, this week's field is nothing to write home about. Headlining the event is #4 Dustin Johnson and #6 Brooks Koepka, the only players inside the Top 10 and just two of seven players inside the Top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings. The first thing this does that is most noticeable is boost everyone's price from what we have been used to over the past six weeks and most of the season, to be honest. While it may be hard to stomach some of these prices this week, I will be sticking to the formula I have been using looking at current form since the return of golf. I have added this data to sheet looking at events played, Top 5/10/25, average finish, DraftKings average, cuts made %, and have added it into the model. To get a more detailed look at this data check out the new Weekly Trends and Cut Trends tabs on the sheet. In terms of the stats model on the sheet, I am looking at Strokes Gained: Ball Striking as my top stat both long term and short term. When breaking that down even further, Strokes Gained: Approach is much more important and 70% of the ball striking stat in the model and then I am also adding Proximity from...

For the first time since 1957, a PGA Tour event will be hosted on the same course on back to back weeks, this time on Jack Nicklaus's Muirfield Village GC in Dublin, Ohio. Last week it was the Workday Charity Open which was a fill-in event for the canceled John Deere Classic. It was Collin Morikawa capturing his second career win beating out Justin Thomas over three playoff holes. It was a ball-strikers event to win as Morikawa(win), Thomas(2nd), and Hovland(3rd) finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th over the four days and seven of the Top 11 in ball striking picked up a Top 10 finish. This week is the regularly scheduled Memorial tournament which has been played at Muirfield Village since 1976. This is also the strongest field we have seen since the return of golf with nine of the Top 10(Adam Scott still not returning) and 43 of the Top 50 golfers in the World teeing it up at Jack's place. For those who played last week, it will be playing a bit different as the grounds crew added tee boxes prior to last week to help in giving the two events some uniqueness. The greens will also play different as they were slowed down(11.5-12 on stimp) last week and back up to their normal Memorial speeds(13-14). This also allowed for almost double the pin locations...

This next couple of weeks presents a very interesting set of circumstances as there will be back to back events played on the same course. With the John Deere Classic canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the PGA Tour stepped up and created the Workday Charity Open to be played at the Jack-Nicklaus-designed Muirfield Village Golf Club. We get another strong field this week headlined by five of the Top 10 players in the World in Jon Rahm(#2), Justin Thomas(#5), Brooks Koepka(#6), Patrick Cantlay(#8), and Patrick Reed(#9). In all there are 23 of the Top 50 players in the world and only consists of six players(Chase Koepka, Kevin Stadler, Jerry Kelly, Brandon Wu, Nicky Taylor, JB Holmes) who have yet to tee it up since the Tour returned. With Muirfield Village being used annually for the Memorial, we do have a ton of course history to look at but things won't be identical to what we have seen in the past. There are new tee boxes on three holes(#8, #11, #15) which have added about 70 yards to the scorecard. There have also been new fairways bunkers added on six holes, as well. Per the quote below, it appears the course WILL play a bit different not from this week to next but also day to day to help keep it in great shape as we have never had back to back PGA Tour events on the same course. Looking...
