An elite field including nine of the Top 10 and 44 of the Top 50 players in the World will be teeing it up at TPC Sawgrass this week . The course is an average length(7,256 yards) Par 72 setup and a classic Pete Dye design that forces a ton of positional play, especially off the tee. Not only do you have to position yourself to have a shot at the small greens, you also have to avoid disaster with water hazards on 17 of 18 holes. This somewhat takes away the advantage of the long bombers and most definitely brings more players into the mix when looking to narrow down your player pool. Looking at the hole design, there is one long Par 3(8th hole-237 yards) and three shorter Par 3's. The Par 4's are pretty standard distance on the front nine outside of the 5th hole that stretches out to 471 yards. On the back nine, there is the exciting risk/reward driveable Par 4 12th hole and the three final Par 4's on the course(14th, 15th, 18th) are all over 450 yards. Add in the famous Island Green 17th hole and players have a very tough closing stretch. While I mentioned distance being not nearly as important here, it can come into play on the Par 5's where the eagle rate has been higher than the Tour average over the last four to five years. Like almost all of the Florida courses and/or Pete Dye courses, it is going to take a strong Tee to Green game to contend but there are a few stats that definitely stand out above the rest in my model. First of all, this is another great week to target Good...

This week the PGA Tour remains in Florida and heads to the home of Arnies Army, Bay Hill Club & Lodge, for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The big difference this week compared to last week's Honda Classic which kicked off the Florida swing is the field. As always, this event draws an elite field and this year welcomes nine of the Top 10, 23 of the Top 25, and 42 of the Top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings. The elite field will be challenged as Bay Hill has ranked as a Top 10 hardest course on tour(including majors!) in five of the last six years and ranked out as the hardest back in 2020. As with most Florida courses, water is a major defence and the win can also wreak havoc on golfers. Next up is the distance as it plays as one of the longest courses on the regular tour schedule and it starts with the Par 3's as they are some of the longest and hardest on tour listed at 199, 215, 221, and 231 yards. Combine that with five of Par 4's that come in over 450 yards and there is a well-above-average amount of long-iron approach shots here. Looking at the shotlink and strokes gained data over the last three years, this is another tournament where the correlations are very even across the board with Strokes Gained: Approach ranking at the top each season. Inside that bubble, I will also be weighing long iron approaches quite high in my model and bombers who are relatively accurate can also gain a ton on the field. With that said, let's look at the course, trends, and dig into some picks. The Course Previous Five Winners 2022 - Scottie Scheffler(-5) 2021 - Bryson DeChambeau(-11) 2020 - Tyrrell Hatton(-4) 2019 - Francesco Molinari(-12) 2018...

It was another wild week at the WM Phoenix Open and the elevated event definitely did not disappoint as the leaderboard was stacked all weekend. It was Scottie Scheffler, who was one of three players to shoot in the 60's in all four rounds, taking home the trophy and also taking back #1 in the World. This week the Tour heads back to California to close out the West Coast swing with the Genesis Invitational and like last week, this is another "elevated event" with a huge 20 million dollar purse. That was the story of the week up until Friday afternoon when Tiger Woods Tweeted out he would be playing in the Genesis Invitational. He joins an already elite field that includes nine of the Top 10(no Cam Smith for LIV reasons) and 39 of the Top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings. After a tough week at TPC Scottsdale, things don't get any easier for the players as they will take on Riviera Country Club this week. Despite Joaquin Niemann posting the lowest winning score(-19) since it was the Northern Trust Open back in 1985, this course plays as one of the toughest non-major stops year in and year out(16th, 11th, 9th, 7th, 6th hardest last 5 years). Things get tough right off the tee as players see some of the narrowest fairways on tour which leads to low driving accuracy numbers. This, once again, has me high on Good Drive % which looks at a combination of driving accuracy + GIR % when missing the fairway. Looking at the correlated Strokes Gained stats this week, Ball Striking is once again important but unlike last week when Off the Tee and Approach were very even, it is Strokes Gained: Approach well ahead in terms of importance when looking at past results. Breaking that...

It was a wild weather week at Pebble Beach that actually saved us most of the pain of having to watch celebrities and other amateurs make bad shots and jokes(I see you Bill Murray). This was due to the third round being suspended with the tour deciding Sunday would be pros only as they had to finish the third round before starting the final round. It was a jam-packed Sunday but in the end, it was a win for team "old guy" as Justin Rose was the only player in the field to shoot in the 60's all four rounds and did it with a 65/66 on the weekend. This week we have the event everyone(except those who hate fun) has been waiting for! The PGA Tour heads to TPC Scottsdale for the Waste Management Phoneix and just when you thought this event couldn't get better, the PGA Tour has made it an elevated event in 2023 which means a huge $20,000,000 purse. That increase in prize money also brings an elite field that includes eight of the Top 10 and 37 of the Top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings. The best part of this upcoming week, you ask? Multi-course rotations are done for the season! The WM Phoenix Open is hosted by TPC Scottsdale which is a Par 71 setup listed at 7,261 yards on the scorecard. It is most known for the fully enclosed Par 3, 16th hole which welcomes over 20,000 fans per day which easily makes it the loudest hole in golf. The rest of the course doesn't get nearly as much hype but is a very solid TPC setup that has ranked 26th or tougher in difficulty rankings in three of the last four years(including majors) and has failed to reach a winning score of...

This week the PGA Tour stays in Cali and heads to Torrey Pines Golf Course for the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open. Like last week, we have another multi-course rotation with players playing one round on the South and North courses on Thursday and Friday before the Top 65 & ties move on to play the South Course on Saturday and Sunday. Another similarity to last week is the elite field led by five of the Top 10 and nine of the Top 25 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are teeing it up this week. One quick note before moving into the course, stats, and picks. To not interfere with the NFL Playoffs, this week's event will be played from Wednesday to Saturday. With three of the four rounds(for those who make the cut) played on the South course, this is where I will concentrate my research and base my stats model around this week. With the North course playing much easier(at least a stroke easier in each of the last five years and over 3.5 strokes easier last year), it will be important to focus there when constructing showdown lineups for the first two rounds. Both courses are Par 72 setups with the biggest difference being distance as the North Course is listed at 7,258 yards while the South Course is listed at a whopping 7,765 yards. This immediately brings two things to the forefront when building models and it starts with Driving Distance which is huge in navigating the seven Par 4's that are over 450 yards and two Par 5's that stretch over...
