The second Major Championship of the season is upon us and the course rotation has brought the Tour back to Shinnecock Hills once again. You may remember the last time it was held here back in 2004 when a lack of water and lots of wind dried out the course to almost unplayable conditions. The worst was hole seven where chip shots hit near the hole still ended up rolling back off the green. You can bet things will be different this time as the oldest course in the country is set to host the 118th United States Open. The course is a Par 70 and has seen some changes since the 2004 U.S. Open, most notably it has been lengthened over 400 yards(now over 7,400 yards) and in turn, has seen some of the fairways widened. The USGA, however, did tighten up some of the fairways in key landing areas which put some emphasis on ball placement to avoid not only bunkers(over 120 on the course in total) but some very thick rough which will result in some unplayable lies. With the added length, approach shots, for the most part, will come from the 175+ yard range which will make long iron play very important this week. The greens are large and undulated and with any U.S. Open will be very fast which also brings Proximity into effect in a big way as missing the key areas on these greens will likely lead to three-putts and big numbers on the scorecard. With the runoffs around these greens combined with the difficulty in hitting the greens(guessing field average of about 55-60% GIR) players who want to lurk on the leaderboard will also have to be ready to get creative around the greens and have a strong scrambling game. For my cheatsheet this week, I won't...
Daily Fantasy PGA Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel – FedEx St. Jude Classic
Daily Fantasy PGA Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel - FedEx St. Jude Classic DFSR is proud to bring you, Chris Durell. FedEx St. Jude Classic We are now just one week away from the U.S. Open with just one tournament standing in our way, the FedEx St. Jude Classic from TPC Southwind. The biggest difference from last week is the strength of the field as we have just two of the Top 10(DJ, Koepka), four of the Top 20(Stenson, Mickelson), and nine of the World's Top 50 golfers in the field. The course is a Par 70 that stretches just over 7,200 yards and is set up with some narrow fairways and smaller greens which puts a ton of emphasis on ball striking this week. Not only are the fairways narrow but there are trees lining the fairways combined with strategically positioned bunkers and water bringing driving accuracy into play and will dictate a lot of "less than driver" gameplans off the tee. As you can also see below when looking at the course trends(via Fantasy National Golf Club), Strokes Gained: Approach is very important here if you want to be lurking on the leaderboard come Sunday. As with all Par 70 courses, there are 12 Par 4's this week and seven of them come in at 450-500 yards which is a distance I will be looking at closely when building my models. I won't be putting as much emphasis or weight on Par 5 Scoring simply due to both of those holes being the easiest on the course with almost everyone being able to reach them in two and make birdies. I am also looking at a combination of Bogey Avoidance and Scrambling as the greens are difficult to hit so those players who can get up and down more often will stay in the hunt and especially those who avoid the big numbers(double or worse). The Course TPC Southwind - Memphis, TN Par 70 - 7,244 Yards...
Daily Fantasy PGA Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel – The Memorial Tournament
Daily Fantasy PGA Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel - The Memorial Tournament DFSR is proud to bring you, Chris Durell. He'll be bringing weekly PGA picks, analysis, and breakdowns to help you cash on DraftKings and FanDuel. The Memorial Tournament After a tough decision to miss the European Tour's BMW Championship at Wentworth, Justin Rose put on a clinic at the Fort Worth Invitational this past week. He led the field in birdies(25), was 4th in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and 1st in Strokes Gained: Approach on his way to a three-stroke victory and his second win of the season. This week the PGA Tour travels to Jack's place, Muirfield Village Golf Club, for the Memorial Tournament. It is an absolutely loaded field with eight of the Top 10 and 32 of the World's Top 50 golfers in the 120-man field. The Jack Nicklaus designed course is fairly generous off the tee which will make it a second shot course putting a ton of emphasis on Strokes Gained: Approach. With the tiered and undulated greens, I will also be looking closely at Proximity as getting the ball on the green and in the right position will be key to making birdies this week. Looking at the course breakdown from Fantasy National below, you will also see that the large majority of the approach shots will come from 150-175 and 175-200 yards and a lot of this has to do with the fact there are six Par 4's that fall between 450 and 500 yards. The longest of the Par 5's is 567 yards(11th hole) making them all reachable in two by almost the entire field. Getting your birdies or better on those four holes will be key while shooting around Par or slightly better on the Par 4's will put you in position come the weekend. Let's now go ahead and look at some course info and trends, past winners, key stats, and then dig into the top picks looking at course history, current form, and the stats model. Daily Fantasy PGA Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel – Fort Worth Invitational
Daily Fantasy PGA Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel - Fort Worth Invitational DFSR is proud to bring you, Chris Durell. Fort Worth Invitational The new course(Trinity Forest) hosting last week's AT&T Byron Nelson provided some excellent golfing and high scores as the wind never really played a factor. I almost nailed a winner with Marc Leishman but he was outplayed on the weekend by Aaron Wise who ended up shooting -23 to take home his first PGA Tour win. In all, I hit three Top 10's and had all six picks make the cut. This week the PGA Tour heads back to Colonial Country Club for the Fort Worth Invitational. You may recognize the event by its former names the Dean & Deluca Invitational and Crowne Plaza Invitational and while the name has changed over the years, the course remains the same. It is a Par 70 that stretches out over 7,200 yards and with 12 Par 4's and just two Par 5's, we will be looking very closely at Par 4 Scoring. The fairways here at Colonial are some of the toughest to hit on Tour so I will also be looking closely at Driving Accuracy and Fairways Gained as those who can hit those fairways more than the field will have a much better shot at hitting more greens and making more birdies. From an approach shot perspective, I will also be looking mostly at the 150-175 yard range(see below). The field of 121 players this week is a strong one that includes three of the Top 5 (Spieth, Rahm, Rose) and 20 of the Worlds Top 50 golfers. Let's now take a look at some of the course stats and trends, previous winners, top stats in the model and then dig into the picks. Daily Fantasy PGA Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel – AT&T Byron Nelson
Daily Fantasy PGA Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel - AT&T Byron Nelson DFSR is proud to bring you, Chris Durell. AT&T Byron Nelson Welcome back golf fans. After a week where we were treated with a loaded field including 49 of the World's Top 50 golfers, we get a much less exciting field this week with just two of the World's Top 10(Spieth, Matsuyama) and seven of the World's Top 50 golfers. Scheduling plays a big part in this, in my opinion, as it is two weeks until the Memorial and one month until the 118th U.S. Open. One of the other factors could be that this year's Byron Nelson will be hosted by a new course(to the event) that is completely different from the TPC Four Seasons course that has been used for the event since 1995. The course being used this week is Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, Texas and was built on a former landfill. It has a lot of ties to a European style golf course as it is a Links course(outside the inland location) with tall native grasses with dramatic Euro style bunkering and very undulated greens. With no real protection from trees, the wind is also a huge factor here at Trinity Forest and it appears, at least early on, that it will most definitely be a factor this week. The fairways are very wide which takes driving accuracy out of the equation which does help the long drivers to a degree but the course will likely play fast creating a ton of role resulting in it playing a little shorter than the posted distance. For a great overview of the course and some of the key holes, be sure to head over to the Trinity Forest Golf Club homepage. With no data on course history whatsoever, we are going to be guessing on final score, what players do well here, what stats are essential in the model which is going...
