We did get to see Charlie Woods look like the next coming of....well his dad and also got to see him trash talk Justin Thomas which was wildly entertaining. It was Thomas and his father who got the last laugh, however, winning the event. We kick off(sorry NFL still rolling) the 2021 portion of the season with a handshake of sorts as the Tournament of Champions is invite-only to winners from the previous calendar year. This year's field has 42 players including eight of the Top 10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings and each of the last four winners(JT, Xander, DJ, JT). For fantasy, this is a no-cut event so all 42 players will play four rounds and this can lead to a much more viable stars and scrubs strategy. You don't have to worry about a slow start derailing your lineup on Thursday and with a limited field the scrubs are not actually scrubs. Before getting into the picks, let's take a look at the course, scorecard, and some of my key stats. The Course Plantation Course at Kapalua Par 73 - 7,596 Yards Greens -Bermuda **Click the image above to see a hole by hole breakdown from PGATour.com** Previous Five Winners 2020 - Justin Thomas(-14) 2019 - Xander Schauffele(-23) 2018 - Dustin Johnson(-24) 2017 - Justin Thomas(-22) 2016 - Jordan Spieth(-30) Top Stats in the Model Strokes Gained: Approach/Proximity With some of the widest, most forgiving fairways on Tour, it really takes the emphasis off hitting them(as everyone will) and shifts the focus to who...

Overall, the field is fairly week in terms of what we have seen recently but is headlined by two stars in Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka. This also marks the final official PGA Tour event of 2020 with the next being the tournament of champions in early Janauary. Let's take a look at the scorecard, the most recent winners, and some key stats for this week and then jump into the picks. The Course El Camaleon Golf Club - Playa Del Carmen, MEX Par 71 - 7,017 Yards Greens - Paspalum **Click the image above to see a hole by hole breakdown from PGATour.com** Previous Five Winners(by season) 2020 - Brendon Todd(-20) 2019 - Matt Kuchar(-22) 2018 - Patton Kizzire(-19) 2017 - Pat Perez(-21) 2016 - Graeme McDowell(-18) Top Stats in the Model Strokes Gained: Approach/Opportunities Gained Looking at the list of past winners or even the past leaderboards, you will notice none of them are bombers off the tee. The fairways are narrow but the rough is not very penal at all which puts a ton of emphasis on the approach shots. Strokes Gained: Approach is my top-weighted stat and can also be broken down into Proximity ranges which depend on the individual golfer you are looking at. Birdie or Better % The winning score here has been around -20 each year which naturally puts birdie or better % right near the top of my list. Par 4 Scoring There are only three Par 5's this week and they play as three of the...

He not only won his first Green Jacket but blew the field way by five strokes and only tallied four bogeys the entire event. Amazing week! Deleting the Masters App from all my devices, however, is like saying goodbye to a close friend I won't see for a long time. The good news here with the Fall Masters is that the next one is only 142 days away! This week the PGA Tour heads to Sea Island Resort for the RSM Classic and while it's not the Masters, the field is very solid with two Top 10(Webb, Hatton) and 20 of the Top 50 players in the World teeing it up this week. Let's get started by looking at the courses(that's right, multi-course rotation szn). The Course This is a week where a multi-course rotation is used for the first two days. Each golfer will play one round on the Seaside course and one round on the Plantation course on Thursday and Friday and all golfers who make the cut(Top 65 & ties) will play their final two rounds on the Seaside course only. The two-course rotation at this event started back in 2015 with just the Seaside course used in previous years. Let's take a look at the courses with the most emphasis going into the Seaside which will host three of the four rounds. Sea Island Resort(Seaside Course) Par 70 - 7,005 Yards The Seaside Course is a Links-Style Par 70 that comes in on the shorter side at just over 7,000 yards....

It will be a bit different this time around but what about 2020 has been normal? One thing will remain the same and that is an elite field of players teeing it up on the most famous course in the World. Augusta National Golf Club may look a bit different in the Fall but it will still play like it always has, tough! That's right, ANGC has ranked 16th, 7th, 2nd, 3rd, and 14th hardest over the last five years. The first thing I look at when putting my model together is distance as the course is a Par 72 that stretches out to almost 7,500 yards while having some generous fairways to hit. One thing we always here about in relation to the off the tee game is a right to left ball flight(draw for RH golfers, fade for LH golfers) as there are six Par 4's and two Par 5's that are shaped this way. It isn't everything but Tiger Woods(x4), Patrick Reed(2018), Sergio Garcia(2017), Bubba Watson(x2), Phil Mickelson(x3), Zach Johnson(2007), Adam Scott(2013), and Mike Weir(2003) make up 14 of the last 19 Green Jackets, all with right to left ball flights. I don't have this weighted into any model but when it comes down to a Golfer A vs. Golfer B decision, I will most definitely be looking at this closer. The biggest challenge at Augusta is the bentgrass greens which are very fast and undulated with shaved edges creating a ton of runoffs. Even with around 68% of the field hitting the fairway on...

If you listen close enough you can hear Jim Nantz warming up his voice and that means we are only one week away from the Masters. Before we get too excited, however, we have one more warmup event that takes the tour to Texas for the Houston Open. The event has been played going all the way back to 1970 and has been played at a number of different courses including Champions GC, Westwood CC, Quail Valley GC, TPC Woodlands, and most recently the Golf Club of Houston. This year, the event moves again and will be hosted at Memorial Park Golf Course which has not been used on Tour since back in the 60's. It was completely overhauled in 2019 by Tom Doak with the consultation help of Brooks Koepka. It will play as a Par 70 this week for the pros. The fairways are smaller than average and while there are only 19 bunkers(post-renovation), trees, undulation, and water in play on four holes will force golfers to really think their way around the course not just bomb and gouge. For fantasy, this opens up the player pool a bit but when targeting shorter hitters, and this can be said for any course, you need to look closely at their iron game specifically from 175-200 and 200+ yards. Even if the longer hitters are playing somewhat conservative and "safe" off the tee, the long irons will be important and there are also three Par 4's of 490 or more yards and three par 3's of 200+ yards. Overall, I am once again looking for players in form not just with their finishes...
