STP 500 Martinsville Speedway - Martinsville, VA Track - .526 Mile Oval Short Track(12° of Banking) This week the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to Martinsville Speedway for the first short track race of the season, the STP 500. With that, we are back to the short track rules package which consists of just the rear spoiler without the air ducts and tapered spacer. If you are looking for exciting bumper to bumper racing, this is the race for you. It could also be redemption time for Martin Truex Jr. who has bumped out of the way on the last lap by Joey Logano during the playoffs. At the time Truex said "He may have won the battle but he won't win the war!". Technically, Truex was wrong as Logano went on to win the Championship in Homestead a few weeks later. For fantasy, dominator points are at the top of the list this week with 500 laps in the race. Looking at the last six races here, there have been multiple drivers to lead 100 or more laps in five straight races and there have been three drivers to do so in two of the last three. As always, qualifying will determine how much place differential value there is but there has not been more than seven drivers to pick up double-digit in the last six races. In fact, last year we saw just five in the fall race and there in the spring race to pick up double-digit place differential. With that, let's jump in and take a look at the previous winners, some track history, and then dig into the pre-qualifying picks. Last Six Winners at Martinsville 2018 Fall - Joey Logano(started 10th, led 309 laps) 2018 Spring - Clint Bowyer(started 9th, led 215 laps) 2017 Fall - Kyle Busch(started 14th, led 184 laps) 2017 Spring - Brad Keselowski(started 4th, led 116 laps) 2016 Fall - Jimmie Johnson(started 3rd, led 92 laps) 2016 Spring - Kyle Busch(started 7th, led 352...

Auto Club 400 Auto Club Speedway - Fontana, CA Track - 2 Mile D-Shaped Oval This week the Monster Energy Cup Series heads to Fontana, California for the Auto Club 400. Like the Las Vegas race, the teams will be using the full 2019 rules package with the tapered spacer to reduce horsepower to 550, taller rear spoiler, wider radiator pan, and air ducts on the front. All to create more downforce and closer racing and with this being a two-mile track with multiple lanes we could most definitely see more drafting this week when compared to the mile and half Vegas race. For fantasy, I think we see two to three dominators as once a car gets out front it is very hard to pass them. Passing can still be done(see Kyle Busch over Ryan Blaney last week) it is just much harder now with the new package. In Vegas, with this package both race winner Joey Logano and 4th place Kevin Harvick led 86 and 88 laps respectively. In that Vegas race there were four drivers(Kurt Busch, Keselowski, Almirola, Truex) to pick up double-digit place differential in that race but qualifying was very unusual putting those fast cars back in the field. Let's jump in and take a look at some track history, current form, and then get into the picks. Last Six Winners at Auto Club Speedway 2018 - Martin Truex Jr. (started 1st, led 125 laps) 2017 - Kyle Larson (started 1st, led 110 laps) 2016 - Jimmie Johnson (started 19th, led 25 laps) 2015 - Brad Keselowski (started 8th, led 1 lap) 2014 - Kyle Busch (started 14th, led 5 laps) 2013 - Kyle Busch (started 4th, led 125 laps) Track History at Auto Club Speedway This track has hosted a Cup series race annually(twice a year from 2004-2010) since 1997 and no driver has been as dominant as Jimmie Johnson. In those 29 races, he leads the way with six career wins(the most recent coming in 2016),...

Ticket Guardian 500 ISM Raceway - Phoenix, AZ Track - 1 Mile Tri-Oval This week the Monster Energy Cup Series heads to ISM Raceway for the Ticket Guardian 500. The new rules package is a little bit different here in Phoenix as the cars will be without the tapered spacer bringing them back up to 750 hp and they will also not be using the air ducts. They will, however, keep the new rear spoiler creating more downforce and early reports in the opening practice are faster speeds here than ever before. We will see how it plays out. For fantasy, with 312 laps in the race, I will still be building around dominator upside as there has been at least one driver to lead 100 or more laps in 10 straight races here. Looking at the place differential trends, the playoff race last fall was a bit of an outlier with 11 drivers picking up double-digit PD as no more than five had done it in the previous five races. It would appear there is a correlation to the new configuration but the sample size is just too small to draw any logical conclusions. While there is not nearly as many top drivers starting back in the field this week, there is still a few we can target in this area. Let's jump in and take a look at some track history, track type history, current form and top targets heading ito the final practices on Saturday. Last Six Winners at ISM Raceway Kyle Busch(started 6th, led 117 laps) Kevin Harvick(started 10th, led 38 laps) Matt Kenseth(started 7th, led 62 laps) Ryan Newman(started 22nd, led 6 laps) Joey Logano(started 4th, led 58 laps) Kevin Harvick(started 18th, led 139 laps) Track History at ISM Raceway Kyle Busch returns to ISM Raceway as the most recent winner here back in November and has finished Top 10 here in seven straight and nine of his last 10 trips with six Top 5's and led 75 or...

Pennzoil 400 Las Vegas Motor Speedway - Las Vegas, NV Track - 1.5 Mile D-Shaped Oval Intermediate(20° of Banking) This week the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to Sin City for the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. While it is the second race using the new 2019 rules package, it will likely be a different race for a couple reasons starting with the track. Atlanta is an old slippery surface that wears out tires fast while Vegas has progressive banking and much more grip making it easier on the tires. The biggest difference this week is the new package which will add aero ducts to the front of the car which should further increase downforce, drafting, and pack racing. We saw a preview of what this weekend could look like back at the start of February when teams tested the new package. If you want to see some of that action check out Jeff Gluck's broadcast on Periscope. Like last week with so many unknowns with the new package, I will be employing multiple strategies when multi-entering contests. I will look for drivers who were fast in one-lap and 10-lap averages in practice and narrow the field down to a couple of dominators to build around in some lineups and will stack teammates in other lineups with the chance we see a lot of drafting and pack racing. Qualifying is Friday afternoon with two more practice sessions on Saturday so be sure to check back on my DFS NASCAR cheatsheet for updated rankings leading up to lineup lock. I will also have a list of my top targets listed on the sheet following final practice. Let's jump in and take a look at the previous winners, race trends, track history, and then look at some pre-qualifying targets. Last Six Winners at Las Vegas Brad Keselowski(started 13th led 75 laps) Kevin Harvick(started 2nd, led 214 laps) Martin Truex Jr.(started 2nd, 150 laps) Brad Keselowski(started 4th, led 24 laps) Kevin Harvick(started 18th, led 142...

Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 Atlanta Motor Speedway - Hampton, GA Track - 1.54 Mile Quad-Oval Intermediate The Daytona 500 is in the books and it is time to really get the season going as the Monster Energy Cup series heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. I touched on it a bit last week with the new rules package for 2019 on all tracks over one mile and this will be the first race with the package in place. In short, NASCAR is increasing the size of the spoiler to create more downforce while adding a tapered spacer(similar to a restrictor plate) to the engine to lower the overall horsepower. All of these changes are in place to keep the cars closer together and somewhat restrict that leader who gets out front and wins by 2-3 seconds or more(Kevin Harvick last year at this track). Here is a look at some of the changes compared to last year via Bob Pockrass on Twitter.   The 2019 rear spoiler (top), the 2018 rear spoiler below. #nascar ⁦@NASCARONFOX⁩ pic.twitter.com/8PE2izxZ99 — Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) February 22, 2019   The 2019 front splitter at top, 2018 splitter below #nascar ⁦@NASCARONFOX⁩ pic.twitter.com/LfY4Y5bhAu — Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) February 22, 2019 What does this mean for fantasy? While we will have to take a wait and see approach, I would think it takes away some of the shine for dominator points as we could see multiple lead changes if there is lots of pack racing. If you didn't think there was enough variance in NASCAR DFS as it is, buckle up as this close pack racing could produce more wrecks with cars closer together like we saw last week. Sure it won't be happening at 200 mph but it will sure add a whole new thought process and strategy if we are seeing "the Big one" at mile and a half tracks consistently. While I do think the best cars and best drivers will still...
