Return to Racing at Darlington It's finally here and I have close to the same kind of feeling as Daytona week as we have pretty much went through an entire second offseason. NASCAR will be one of the first sports back in action this weekend at Darlington which will start a stretch of four races for the Cup Series in 10 days on two tracks(Charlotte the other). Like I mentioned in my "NASCAR Update Article", there will be no practices as these will be one-day events and the only race with qualifying will be the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte next Sunday. As of Monday, May 11, NASCAR has yet to release how qualifying will work but my guess is that we will have this data days before the race giving us plenty of time to analyze the data and build lineups. There will be an added variance from a fantasy perspective with the return to racing with no practice or qualifying but given we have playing iRacing DFS which was a whole new level of variance, I am not worried at all. It's all about the data and we have lots of it here at Darlington and in NASCAR in general. Let's dig in and look at some of the data leading up to the race and make sure to tune in Sunday morning for the pre-race/pre-lock Live show on my YouTube channel. Bojangles Southern 500 The final bye-week of the 2019 season is now behind us and the focus now shifts to the final two races of the regular season. The last time cars were on track, Matt DiBenedetto almost flipped the Playoff picture upside down leading 93 laps late at Bristol but was eventually passed by Denny Hamlin with just 11 laps to go. Instead, we have what appears to be a four-horse race when it comes to points and the playoff bubble. Daniel Suarez sits in that coveted 16th position with 591 points with Ryan Newman just 12 points ahead in 15th, Clint Bowyer just two points behind in 17th, and seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson just 26 points behind in 18th. No driver in and around the bubble will be feeling safe with two very unique tracks to close out the regular season and it starts this weekend with one of the Crown Jewels of the sport. Darlington Raceway has hosted a race on Labour Day weekend going all the way back to 1950 where there were 75 cars who battled the track "Too Tough to Tame". While the field has been greatly reduced(39 cars entered) the track is still one of the most unique and challenging on the circuit. It is more egg-shaped than oval, has different degrees of banking at each end of the track, and is rough and very hard on tires. While the winner hasn't come from the pole position since Kevin Harvick's 2014 win, Darlington has a very high correlation to starting position which makes sense as passing can be a challenge on the narrow, high-groove track. This puts a ton of emphasis on track position and that correlates very highly with the dominator as there have been seven drivers to lead 100+ laps in the last six races, three times coming from the pole, and six times coming from a Top 5 starting position. Let's now take a look at some race trends, the weekend schedule, and...

We've got you completely covered.   Bojangles Southern 500 Darlington Raceway - Darlington, SC Track - 1.366 Mile Intermediate Track(23-25 Degrees of Banking) After what seemed like a very long week off, the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series returns this week for one of the premier events in the sport, the Southern 500. It is a throwback weekend where teams and drivers will sport car paint schemes and even costumes emulating drivers and teams from years past. Darlington has been a staple on the Cup Series schedule since back in 1950 and is duly named the track "Too Tough to Tame". It is a 1.366-mile asphalt track that is very narrow and creates a very tough environment for even the best drivers in the world. It was repaved back in 2007 but with 10 years of wear, it has become very abrasive again which will wear tires very fast and put a ton of emphasis on strategy for crew chiefs and teams. The other thing that adds to the difficulty is that each end of the track is different with different banking. As you would expect, it is also a track where the veteran drivers almost always come out on top. For fantasy, we will once again be looking to build around dominator point upside as there has been at least one(two last year) driver to lead 100 or more laps in each of the last six races here. There have also been multiple drivers(three drivers in 2017 & 2012) to lead 50 or more laps in four of the last six races. Passing can be difficult here so unless something dramatic happens in qualifying, place differential will be slightly discounted this week. Only once in the last six races has there been double-digit drivers pick up double-digit place differential points. With that said, let's dig in to the trends for this race and then look at some pre-qualifying targets. Last Six Winners at Darlington Denny Hamlin(started 9th, led 124 laps) Martin Truex Jr.(started 8th, led 28 laps) Carl Edwards(started 13th, led 15 laps) Kevin Harvick(started 1st, led 238 laps) Matt Kenseth(started 7th, led 17...
