That's right, the PGA Tour heads to La Quinta, California for The American Express this week where there will be three courses used to accommodate the pro-ams in the field. Each player in the field will play one round on each course from Thursday through Saturday with the cut of Top 65 and ties happening after round 3 is complete. Those players will then play the final round on the Stadium Course on Sunday. The field for the American Express is stacked this year with five of the Top 7 and 10 of the Top 20 players in the OWGR teeing it up in Cali. Making that even more interesting is the fact almost every one of those players has good event history here. Looking at the courses, all three are Par 72's that come in under 7,200 yards and have been on the easier side in terms of average scoring which makes sense with the presence of amateurs. That means a lot of birdies for the pros and the reason we have seen a winning score in the -20's each year going back to 2016 when these three courses became the staple here. When researching and looking at stats, keep in mind that there is only Shotlink data on the Stadium Course. This makes it somewhat challenging when trying to put together a model so for these types of events...

This week the PGA Tour stays in Hawaii and heads from the Plantation Course at Kapalua over to Waialae Country Club in Honolulu for the 2023 Sony Open. The quality of the field drops significantly from last week but still includes seven of the Top 25 players in the world including defending champion Hideki Matsuyama. While the views are similar, the course is much different from last week's wide-open fairways and large greens. Waialae CC is a much smaller Par 70 setup that is 7,044 yards on the scorecard. Wide open is also not on the menu this week as the course is much more of a positional course, especially off the tee. This has accuracy much higher in my off-the-tee model than distance. Strokes Gained: Approach and Par 4 Scoring are going to be 1A/1B in my stats model this week. On the approach side, I will look at mid-iron Proximity ranges(125-150, 150-175) and with the need for accuracy, I will also look at Fairway Proximity. With the field accuracy below average at this event and word the rough has been grown out to around 3" the average GIR should remain low which is also going put more emphasis on Strokes Gained: Around the Green and as always, a hot putter can help solve deficiencies in any of those areas. Hideki is a great example as he ranked 26th in SG: Approach last year but gained a whopping 7.3 strokes putting to lead the field in that area. Outside of the very windy 2020 Sony Open,...

We have reached the conclusion of the fall season as the PGA Tour heads to Sea Island Golf Club for the RSM Classic. This event has also used a multi-course rotation since 2015 where golfers play one round at both the Plantation and Seaside courses with the Top 65(and ties) playing the final two rounds on just the Seaside course. Both courses are on the short side at just over 7,000 yards with the Seaside a par 70 and Plantation a Par 72 setup. Both courses have also played fairly easy in terms of field average scoring ranking no worse than 25th hardest over the last five years. In my stats model this week, Strokes Gained: Approach combined with mid-range iron proximity(125-150 & 150-175 yards) leads the way. This is a course where the field hits a lot of greens but with the undulation, it will be very important to hit the right quadrant to have a shot at birdie or even par. When looking at Strokes Gained: Off the Tee the is week, I am focusing on driving accuracy/fairways gained. With the high amount of greens hit here, it is only going to give you a better shot to get closer than your opponent if you are in a scoring position on the fairway. Outside of those two main stats, I am also mixing in Par 4 scoring, especially from 400-450 yards, Opportunities Gained, and Strokes Gained: Putting on Bermuda grass. Mix...

The event dates back to the early 70's but this marks the third year that Memorial Park will play host and it has played as a Top 10 hardest course on tour in each of those previous seasons including the majors. The course is the longest Par 70 on tour listed at over 7,400 on the scorecard. Two of the five Par 3's exceed 200 yards(216, 237) and five of the 10 Par 4's are 490 yards or longer. This brings a few key factors into my stats model this week and its Driving Distance, Strokes Gained: Approach, Proximity from 200+ yards, and Par 4 scoring. Combine that with a touch of course history and some current form and we can start narrowing down the field and looking at some core plays. Let's dig in! Top Targets Scottie Scheffler World Golf Ranking (#2) Vegas Odds (6/1) Draftkings ($11,500) FanDuel ($12,000) There is a sizeable gap at the top of the salary this week as Scottie Scheffler looks back in form and ready to take back the #1 player in the world. After a disappointing T45 at the CJ Cup to open his PGA Tour season, Scottie bounced back last week with a T3 at the Mayakoba where he finished 4th in greens in regulation and also appears to have found the putter ranking 12th in putts per GIR in the field. He now returns to Memorial Park where he finished T2 last year and ended up rankings second in Strokes Gained: Tee to...

I am not going out on a limb starting with Hovland who has won this event in back-to-back years but I just can't trust the putting with Morikawa and Scheffler right now. This will be his fifth start worldwide this season and has made the cut in all four with a T5 at the Zozo Championship and T5 at the BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour. With a putter that has been above-average and that kind of course history, Hovland is my favorite play in stars and scrubs builds this week. Tom Hoge World Golf Ranking (#33) Vegas Odds (22/1) Draftkings ($9,500) FanDuel ($10,900) If looking to go a little more balanced this week I love starting with Tom Hoge who has one of the hottest players on the planet to start the season with four straight Top 15 finishes including two Top 10's. That success has been driven by an elite iron game as he has gained four or more strokes on approach in three of those events and while the Zozo didn't track strokes gained, he finished 6th in GIR. His success here at El Camaleon has been forgettable for the most part but he comes in playing the best golf of his career so I am not at...
