You'll like it as much as we do.   Total Bases Giancarlo Stanton When I sorted our projections for total bases, my eyes started to bleed. Stanton's number is literally the highest I've ever seen anyone's number be. Really, it's the perfect storm. You know by now how great a place to hit Coors Field is. But have you checked in on the season lefty Franklin Morales is having? In 112 innings, dude has 76 Ks and 52 BBs. That's just terrible. I'm going to go ahead and call this the very biggest mismatch we've seen this season. Play Stanton in the top slot. Don't consider anything else. Alex Gordon Not your classic total bases play, but I think the case for Gordon is very strong. He's been tearing it up recently, flexing home run power, and he's got a terrific match up. The right handed Colby Lewis has only managed 33.3% ground balls this year, and leaving balls in the air in Texas is a recipe for disaster. The Royals will build upon Lewis' lost season, and Gordon will be right at the center of it.   Hits Melky Cabrera Jose Reyes The Melk-man is batting .314 this year with a .331 BABIP. What this means is that if he gets the ball in play, he has a great chance to get a hit. Reyes is pretty much the same thing, but a little bit worse. Smyly is a decent pitcher, but lefties have a tough time striking out Melky and Reyes, and they are my top hits plays by far today.   Strikeouts Felix Hernandez Our projection system is a lot more bullish on the Red Sox than I am. I think the writing is on the wall -...

Thursday is a day of rest around these parts. Early Corey Kluber - FD 10700 DK 11400 DD 21400 DFSTR 14000 Though our system isn't as high on him as I thought it'd be but I'm still taking him at the stud in the early slate of games. Kluber's been a Cy Young contender this season rocking a 2.69 xFIP and striking out 9.89 batters per nine. The peripherals are insane with a 5:1 K:BB ratio that allows him to work later into games. He's pitched into the eighth inning in five of his last eight games and that kind of efficiency makes him feel super safe for cash games. The Twins aren't dogs against righty pitching, but they do strike out more than 21% of the time. Consider Brandon McCarthy Late Zack Greinke - FD 9700 DK 10600 DD 19450 DFSTR 8700 Going to be an obvious and popular play but for good reason. Greinke's been awesome this season, finding his 2011 form striking out close to ten batters per nine and keeping the walks to around two per nine. Those numbers are super efficient and allow him to go late in games. Though they've hit better of late, there's a reason the Padres rank last in the league against righty pitching. Yes they've been unlucky, but that doesn't completely account for the .286 team wOBA against righties this season. They strikeout 22% of the time, and Greinke is a huge favorite today. This one's easy. On a day full of corrections, here's another one. Greinke isn't pitching today. It's Kershaw. The price is much higher but the value is still there IMO. Makes salaries tougher though. Strongly consider Madison Bumgarner here as well.   Catchers Early Wilson Ramos - FD 3000 DK 3800 DD 8950 DFSTR 4500 This one's a little bit of a stretch but I really want to avoid some of the bigger ace arms going in this early slate. Not having to throw guys out there against Kluber,...

You'll like it as much as we do.   Total Bases FYI, with such a gap in games today and such a short slate, I'm focusing mostly on the shorter, later slate for these picks. I like to play it safe. Mike Trout Getting a little old recommending him every day, especially when he doesn't always get the job done. But that's the story with MLB DFS. You need to play the percentages on any give day. Baseball is a fickle sport and is prone to streaks. I tend to not play too much into the streakiness of a player (unless it's a bad one possibly related to injury). Trout remains an ultimate talent and today faces a subpar pitcher in Rubby de la Rosa. I'm all over Trout again in the total bases category. Evan Gattis This guy just murders lefty pitching, and David Holmberg is just the kind of lefty to pick on. Gattis' numbers this season are off the charts with a 1.133 OPS against lefties. His insanely high Babip (well over .400) has something to do with that, but you can't have a number that high on luck alone. He crushes lefties for his career as well and this is a great spot to pick up some separation as I think some more folks will be on Upton (also a solid play). I'll take Gattis and look to pull away from the field.   Hits Buster Posey Hunter Pence Both of these guys hit lefties much better for their careers and Posey is especially difficult for lefties to strike out. They get a great matchup against Travis Wood who doesn't strike many batter out (walks a few more than I'm comfortable with in this format) and could...

I'm listing the evening slate first because it's the bigger one. Garrett Richards - FD 8600 DK 10600 DD 18550 DFSTR 10200 If I were to hone in on a cash game play for the evening slate I think I'd favor Richards. He's had an excellent season with an 8.84 K/9 and 2.77 xFIP. The Red Sox put up a .302 wOBA against righties and strike out close to 21% of the time against righties. I don't love him pitching in Fenway, but the park does at least suppress power to lefties and the Red Sox have been starting some weak lineups of late. Doesn't feel great, great but in a rough evening slate for pitching Richards seems like the play. Alex Wood - FD 8000 DK 7300 DD 15750 DFSTR 8200 Pitching for the evening slate is a bit all over the map. It's hard to hone in on one solid, safe play. Each of the arms comes with a risk. Wood is one such example. I really like his numbers this season as he's striking out close to a batter an inning and turned in some big performances. The problem is the Pirates are damn good bad against lefties, ranking in the top five bottom third of the league in team wOBA when facing southpaws. (I had been quick referencing the righty splits instead of lefty. Our system had the multiplier high on Wood because of this I just glanced at the wrong team splits page.) Tanner Roark - FD 7700 DK 8700 DD 15650 DFSTR 9400 The Nationals are such a heavy favorite in the evening slate that it's tough leaving off Roark. His numbers this season are decidedly average with a 3.77 xFIP. His peripherals are fine considering his 3:1 K:BB ratio and he keeps his walks on the lower side. The Diamondbacks rank in the bottom half of the league against righties. It's tough finding safer plays in the evening grouping of games. Shooting...

You'll like it as much as we do.   Total Bases Nelson Cruz Adam Jones Going with a couple of O's today against the righty Noesi. While it's a bit odd buying Cruz in a reverse split, you'll see why in a moment. Cruz's .800 OPS this season in the righty platoon split shows he can at least get the ball in play and for his career he slugs close to .500 against RHP. Meanwhile, for his career Jones is actually better against right handed pitching. That hasn't played out this summer, but historically his wOBA is about 17 points higher against righties. That lines up with Hector Noesi's career splits that have him getting rocked by righties. Right handed bats OPS around .800 against him. Both guys walk very little against righties making the total bases expectation higher in a solid matchup.   Hits Brian Dozier He's getting Babip squeezed this season with that number about fifty points lower than his career averages. Even with the bad luck he's been above average against lefty pitching this season. For his career he has an OPS over .800 with a 129 wRC+. T.J. House pitches to contact and doesn't strike out an inordinate amount of batters. I'm liking the upside on Dozier today and think he could be in for multiple hits from the two hole in the lineup. Michael Brantley Man Ricky Nolasco just reeks of average, ho-hum pitcher. His K rates are always on the low side (6.16 K/9 this season) and his xFIP just lives in the fours. I'm always on Brantley when he's facing a low K righty because dude is just near impossible to strike out. That means hits baby, hits. A great daily play in this...
