Pitchers Ian Kennedy - FD 8100 DK 9300 DD 15650 DFSTR 7900 The Diamondbacks are the new Padres. It's just fun to target pitchers against them. And you've got good reason to do so. They have been steadily dropping in total offense as compared to the rest of the league. They are rough against right handed pitching and Kennedy, with Petco Park all around him, could be in line for a strong game. He's been consistent this season, maintaining a high K rate of over a batter an inning with an xFIP in the low threes. The ballpark is of course a factor as Kennedy does allow fly balls that are kept in the park. Wish he didn't walk as many batters but, this is a good spot for him. Max Scherzer - FD 11000 DK 12800 DD 21750 DFSTR 10800 I'm putting him down on the list because I don't think he has the best matchup today and the price is a little steep. The reason it's worth considering Scherzer is that he's really the only pitcher with the K upside to overcome a suboptimal matchup and maintain a bit of "safety" for cash games. The Indians are tough against righties, but like I said, Scherzer has so much strikeout potential that he raises his floor considerably. Wily Peralta - FD 7100 DK 6600 DD 13400 DFSTR 5100 If you are looking for a bargain bin guy I think Peralta has some value today. The Cardinals, while ranking near the middle of the league against righties, are in general a light hitting bunch. Peralta is far from a stud, but he's coming super cheap with a 3.73 xFIP on the season. Again, he...

Total Bases Edwin Encarnacion It's easy to forget about guys who have missed a portion of the season, because their year to date counting stats don't look all too impressive, but don't make that mistake with Encarnacion. 27 homers in 422 PA is nothing to shrug off, and neither is the .394 wOBA. But E5's raw talent isn't all that's driving this ranking. There's also Chris Capuano. The 36 year old Yankee's lefty is getting by this season, but he shouldn't be able to fool a hitter of Encarnacion's caliber. Could be a huge game. Miguel Cabrera I've been known to get Miggy with it on more than one occasion, so it shouldn't surprise you that our projection system loves him against Scott Carroll and his 50 Ks and 38 walks in 100 innings pitched this year. Those peripherals are arguably the very worst in all of baseball. Combine that with a great hitter's park, and Carroll's opportunities against Cabrera have "Sportscenter Highlight" written all over them. Hits Melky Cabrera With his .325 BABIP, Cabrera is just terrific at turning balls near the zone into base hits. Capuano will have to stay in the zone against Cabrera with the huge right handed bats lurking behind him, and the Melk-man could put together a pretty solid outing. Ryan Braun Another case of a high BABIP guy against a pitch to contact guy. Vogelsong has barely more Ks+BBs than IP this year, which puts Braun and his max-effort swing in great position to rap out a hit or two. Strikeouts Felix Hernandez King Felix pulls what amounts to being a pretty solid match-up today. The Nats are the 7th easiest team in...

Total Bases Nelson Cruz Adam Jones Admittedly a few ways you can go with total bases today, but me? I'm grabbing the Os sluggers against the lefty Smyly. Smyly and his 36% ground ball rate will have a tough time keeping the likes of Cruz and Jones in the ball park, much less off the bases altogether. If anyone can be considered to be a favorite to get an extra base hit tonight, it's these two. Hits Jose Altuve It always feels dirty when Altuve is off the top of the hits chart, so it's a welcome sign to see him there today. Not a lot to see here - Altuve and his 13.4% total Ks + BBs against Pomeranz's less than wipe out stuff. What you may not know is that most of Altuve's stellar year is coming from lefties - he's got a ridiculous .425 batting average against them this year. I'll call you craz if you consider anyone else for the top slot. Joe Mauer Not a banner year for Mauer, but he can still put hits together in bunches (and has done so recently), and Liam Hendriks is a failed reliever who has never proven a single thing as a starter. Assuming he doesn't just get walked, Mauer feels like a pretty easy play here. Strikeouts Clayton Kershaw The Diamondbacks aren't the easiest team to strike out in the world, but they have a pretty bad offense, and if Kershaw gets to working through them, I could definitely see him getting up in that 7 K range. For the record - I'm not thinking it's likely that any pitcher crests 9 Ks today. Zack Wheeler The...

Total Bases Giancarlo Stanton Doug said it well enough yesterday, so why reinvent the wheel? When Stanton's in Coors, he's still the man. And he's facing a dude who can't pitch. From Doug: "No surprise here really. Stanton's having an incredible season posting a .970 OPS and that .267 ISO remains one of the elite numbers in the whole game. One of the big breakthroughs for him this year is his success against righty pitching as his 153 wRC+ and .395 wOBA show a dude seeing things pretty well in that side of the split. He's playing in Coors which as we all know has paper thin air and allows balls to travel out with alarming regularity. Don't like him as much as yesterday, but he's still the total bases favorite in the evening slate. Nolan Arenado On the other side of the diamond stands young Nolan Arenado, who has blossomed into a terrific hitter this year. His career .384 wOBA against left handed pitching is dynamite, and he'll eat Brad Hand and his 48 Ks against 32 BBs in 78 innings for lunch in the thin Coors air. Hits Scooter Gennett The Scoot Man! A terrific hits play on most days due to the excellent batting average and the lack of walks, but a terrific play against the pitch to contact Vance Worley. Gennett is a total train wreck against left handed pitching, but he's truly elite against righties - posting a .342 batting average and a .387 wOBA. Jose Altuve Altuve is my favorite hits play on most days, but he gets dinged a little due to Bauer's K rate this season. Still! You have to love him against...

Total Bases Giancarlo Stanton When I sorted our projections for total bases, my eyes started to bleed. Stanton's number is literally the highest I've ever seen anyone's number be. Really, it's the perfect storm. You know by now how great a place to hit Coors Field is. But have you checked in on the season lefty Franklin Morales is having? In 112 innings, dude has 76 Ks and 52 BBs. That's just terrible. I'm going to go ahead and call this the very biggest mismatch we've seen this season. Play Stanton in the top slot. Don't consider anything else. Alex Gordon Not your classic total bases play, but I think the case for Gordon is very strong. He's been tearing it up recently, flexing home run power, and he's got a terrific match up. The right handed Colby Lewis has only managed 33.3% ground balls this year, and leaving balls in the air in Texas is a recipe for disaster. The Royals will build upon Lewis' lost season, and Gordon will be right at the center of it. Hits Melky Cabrera Jose Reyes The Melk-man is batting .314 this year with a .331 BABIP. What this means is that if he gets the ball in play, he has a great chance to get a hit. Reyes is pretty much the same thing, but a little bit worse. Smyly is a decent pitcher, but lefties have a tough time striking out Melky and Reyes, and they are my top hits plays by far today. Strikeouts Felix Hernandez Our projection system is a lot more bullish on the Red Sox than I am. I think the writing is on the wall -...
