It's really difficult to make distinctions at the top of the pitching pool. I think a general rule today is this: Of the four stud pitchers going today, Darvish, Scherzer, Sale and Greinke, you should employ the ones that are the cheapest on the respective sites. This might sound like a cop out. It really isn't. I think it's a logical manuever and if you play multiple sites, represents a natural hedge. The four big guys are working with many of the same considerations. They are all facing teams rated in the bottom half of the league against their respective hands. Each opponent K's about 20% of the time and each of these guys is pitching lights out this year, K-ing more than a batter an inning. And just generally being awesome. Sale in particular is an insane bargain on FanDuel. So if trying to choose, rather than splitting hairs, just save money and move on. Here are some other guys to round it out. Cole Hamels FanDuel 8300 DraftKings 8400 DraftStreet 18725 Hamels' xFIP is actually in line with his career averages, he's just run a little bad (for him) in Babip. His K rate is fine, the walks are a little high and he's pretty much been the same pitcher as in the past with no change in velocity. The Mets are a team striking out a crazy 26% of the time against lefties. Hamels falls into the tier below the big boys, but the opponent makes him real enticing. It was a tough choice between he and Lester in the same range, but I'll take Hamels because of the opponent. Wade Miley FanDuel 6100 DraftKings 6400 DraftStreet 12777 The Reds come in dead last in the league against lefties and some of their stats include when Votto was still around. They are an atrocious offensive team, prone to the K and really...

You'll like it as much as we do.   Total Bases Victor Martinez Swinging a hot bat this year and Chris Young isn't the kind of pitcher that cools off hot bats. Chris Young doesn't throw fire. He throws flammable objects that explode off bats. He sucks. I only wish the Tigers had a few more lefties so we could capitalize on Young's ineptitude. VMart is a guy that I'm targeting though. When projecting total bases, we need a double or more to hit the top mark. I'll take a solid hitter against the worst pitcher going every time. Funny enough, Miggy rates far below VMart in our system today on projected total bases. I suspect more folks will be on Miggy. Take Martinez. David Ortiz He and Martinez rank so much higher than everyone else on our list today. They are 1 and 1A in total bases. The only thing that worries me a little about Ortiz as compared to Martinez is Papi faces Odorizzi who strikes out and walks a lot of batters. Those two things make getting the bat on the ball a little tougher. But Ortiz is so high up in our projections that I don't think I can fade him in this spot.   Hits Jacoby Ellsbury When targeting hits we want to make sure the opposing pitcher is someone who pitches to contact and doesn't whiff anyone. In fact, I doubt he ever goes back to Japan. Seriously. I don't think he'll ever visit. I know if I had an xFIP of 2.30 at my job, I'd never leave. K'ing ten per nine? Sleeping over in the break room. He's been a stud no doubt about it. The Twins have actually been good against righties and it doesn't look fluky. But Tanaka has been so elite that you can kind of consider him against almost anyone. Only downside (and it will be for half the games this season) is the park. Michael Wacha FanDuel 8400 DraftKings 9500 DraftStreet 18303 Wacha doesn't rate too far below Tanaka today. He's a bit behind him in raw points, but comes at such a cheaper tag almost everywhere that he makes a great cash game play. His points/$ is better than Tanaka across the board. The Giants are in the middle of the league against righties and strike out nearly 23% of the time. Busch Stadium really limits power to all sides of the plate, making Wacha even safer. If it helped me get some bigger bats in the lineup I'd really consider starting Wacha over Tanaka. His xFIP is just slightly north of three and he K's a batter an inning. Brandon McCarthy FanDuel 5900 DraftKings 7200 DraftStreet 13689 Don't know what's gotten into him this season, but I like it. He's been real, real good. McCarthy's always been solid at limiting the free passes. But this year he's seen a bump in strike outs to go along with it. People will be off of him because of the 4.87 ERA. But his xFIP is running two runs below that at 2.88. You won't see much bigger difference this far into the the season and much of it is thanks to...

The Giants rank around the middle of the league in wOBA against righties and strike out about 23% of the time. Wainwright's safety is in his refusal to walk anyone. He allows his share of hits, and is susceptible to the blowup, but I don't see it happening tonight. He comes at a steep price, but you are paying for his strikeout numbers and limited downside. David Price FanDuel 9200 DraftKings 10100 DraftStreet 18889 I still very much believe. His xFIP is trailing the ERA by nearly 1.5 runs. The Babip is 50 points higher than his career average. the HR/FB is way out of line with his career averages. And the Red Sox actually rank near the bottom of the league in K% against lefties. I'm still buying him. Don't love that it's in Fenway. But the top tier pitchers all have question marks tonight. Francisco Liriano FanDuel 6900 DraftKings 6200 DraftStreet 13910 Ok, let's parse this out. Frankie L. is by no means a safe play. He walks way,way too many guys to consider in a cash game format. But there's some good news about him today. First, his price is crazy low in some spots, reflective of his 5+ ERA. But the xFIP is a full run and a half lower. He's struggling a little with guys on base and really getting killed on the HR/FB rate. If both of those start trending toward his career averages, we are in business. Plus the Dodgers are sneaky bad against lefties. Like strike out 23% of the time bad. Bottom third of the league bad. Liriano strikes out enough guys to more than justify the prices he's...

Did I mention that LA is a great place to pitch? There's rarely an opportunity to make a pitching investment like this, especially on FanDuel. C.J. Wilson FanDuel 8700 DraftKings 11400 DraftStreet 20669 Wilson draws the Mariners in the pitcher's paradise of Safeco field. Seattle has shown signs of life at the plate this year, but that's all against right handed pitching. Wilson has his way in this one, and finishes with the W and a good pile of Ks. You heard it here first! Anibal Sanchez FanDuel 8200 DraftKings 8300 DraftStreet 17230 Sanchez has been a fine fantasy performer this year, and I believe the shine is coming off Scott Kazmir. Oakland has been a juggernaut on offense this year, but Oakland is still a nice place to pitch, and Sanchez is backed by a damned good offense of his own. Tim Lincecum FanDuel 7100 DraftKings 10600 DraftStreet 18411 Lincecum is absolutely a wild card at this stage in his career, but his upside is as good as anyone not named Kershaw or Felix today, and at 70% the price. Chicago is a mediocre offense, and San Francisco eats up left handed hitters (Lincecum's one major weakness). It's not a safe play by any means, but he could absolutely equal the lines of the top priced guys today while freeing up money to take stud hitters.
