Total Bases Nelson Cruz Adam Jones Going with a couple of O's today against the righty Noesi. While it's a bit odd buying Cruz in a reverse split, you'll see why in a moment. Cruz's .800 OPS this season in the righty platoon split shows he can at least get the ball in play and for his career he slugs close to .500 against RHP. Meanwhile, for his career Jones is actually better against right handed pitching. That hasn't played out this summer, but historically his wOBA is about 17 points higher against righties. That lines up with Hector Noesi's career splits that have him getting rocked by righties. Right handed bats OPS around .800 against him. Both guys walk very little against righties making the total bases expectation higher in a solid matchup. Hits Brian Dozier He's getting Babip squeezed this season with that number about fifty points lower than his career averages. Even with the bad luck he's been above average against lefty pitching this season. For his career he has an OPS over .800 with a 129 wRC+. T.J. House pitches to contact and doesn't strike out an inordinate amount of batters. I'm liking the upside on Dozier today and think he could be in for multiple hits from the two hole in the lineup. Michael Brantley Man Ricky Nolasco just reeks of average, ho-hum pitcher. His K rates are always on the low side (6.16 K/9 this season) and his xFIP just lives in the fours. I'm always on Brantley when he's facing a low K righty because dude is just near impossible to strike out. That means hits baby, hits. A great daily play in this...

Pitchers Stephen Strasburg - FD 9700 DK 10200 DD 20850 DFSTR 9000 Was all over him in a big way last time out and he only solidified why in that performance. Nothing has changed in how I feel about Stras except in a positive way. He was dominant last time out and I've been firmly in the camp that he's been massively unlucky this season. He's striking out more than 10.5 batters per nine and walking only two. The D-Backs aren't a cellar-dwelling squad but they're below average against righties. Historically, Stras has pitched better at home and I'm loving him in every format today. To spend significantly less money on him than Scherzer is a no-brainer for me. Hisashi Iwakuma - FD 9200 DK 9900 DD 20250 DFSTR 9700 Iwakuma's been an artist this season as it appears he's made it a religion of some sort to never walk anyone. His 0.78 BB/9 rate is just plain ridiculous. He's benefited a great deal from pitching in Safeco Field and this game is in a much better hitter's park. But the Phillies have been brutal against righties this season coming in at 28th in team wOBA on that side of the split. Iwakuma won't give you an inordinate amount of K's but he makes up for it a bit in volume. Never walking anyone allows him to go later into games. Scott Kazmir - FD 8400 DK 8200 DD 18200 DFSTR 8000 The xFIP is still trailing the ERA by about a half a run and the strikeout numbers won't blow you away, but I'm buying on Kaz today because the Mets are just so, so bad against lefties. They rank second to last in team wOBA and strike out 24% of the time. That latter number is astronomically high and increases Kazmir's K expectation on the day. Things are lining up to make him a decent mid-tier option. Tsuyoshi Wada - FD 6300 DK 7300 DD 11850 DFSTR 5900 His last four starts have been solid and today he's in another nice spot against the Giants. San Fran comes in...

Total Bases Mike Trout Been up here a lot lately, but that's mostly because he's the best player of his generation. So he has that going for him, which is nice. Had been slumping a bit, but started to come out of it last night. He should have more opportunity to pad his stats with a matchup against Allen Webster today. Webster's been heavy doses of garbage in his time in the majors, walking more than he strikes out and putting up an xFIP in the sixes. Angels should be able to get to him early and often today with Trout doing some major damage in Fenway. Salvador Perez I try not to overrate Coors Field, and I think our system does a decent job of properly weighing Coors' effect on a given player on a given day. So I don't typically just make blanket recommendations about playing guys when they visit Denver. But Salvador's in a good spot against the lefty Matzek. Perez has had a rough go of it against lefties this season thanks in part (but not completely) to a depressed Babip. I think you can play him today with the idea behind separation in a bigger field because I doubt many others will be on him. Hits Jose Altuve Dude's a hit machine this season. One amazing stat is that against lefties he has an OPS over 1.000 with having hit only three home runs and never taking any walks. That's amazing. This is large part to a contact rate (and inflated Babip) that are off the charts. He's tearing it up this season and lefties just can't get him out. Capuano's been (annoyingly) decent this season,...

Pitchers Clayton Kershaw - FD 12000 DK 14400 DD 21700 DFSTR 14400 With so many cheap options out there in terms of bats, I think it's totally and completely fine to run Kershaw out there today. The limb I'm going out on is holding just fine thank you. There's no debate about Kershaw's awesomeness. One only needs consider his price. Can you get away with it. Today I think you can. For such a righty-heavy lineup, the Brewers aren't great against lefty pitching and they strike out a ton, more than 22% of the time. Kershaw's last two outings have been ho-hum, but that's only by his ridiculous standards. He's a solid favorite for the win against Gallardo, and while I don't think he's a "must", in cash games I don't see a big reason to avoid him. (And I don't think I'm touching Price and King Felix facing each other) After Clayton the waters get a little muddier... Matt Shoemaker - FD 7200 DK 6600 DD 13550 DFSTR 8300 He's rather quietly has a real nice season posting a 3.16 xFIP that's outpacing his ERA by about three quarters of a run. His 8.67 K/9 rate and 5:1 K:BB shoe a guy getting it done. The Rangers come in around the bottom of the league against righties and have, for the most part, been really struggling lately. On a day of big ace arms taking the mound, Shoemaker could quietly have a profitable game and it especially attractive on two SP site where he can be paired with Kershaw. Gio Gonzalez - FD 8800 DK 9300 DD 15900 DFSTR 6500 Is super frustrating as you really never know what you're going to get with him. He has flashes of awesome combined with walking the ballpark and getting bombed. He could go seven innings strong or be at 85 pitches in the third. It's a crapshoot. Today he gets the Pirates who rank in the bottom of third of the league against lefties. Gio can strike out almost ten batters per nine. But the walks. Oh the walks. Consider Wade...

Total Bases Jose Bautista Bautista obliterates lefty pitching. Just destroys it and John Danks is the kind of lefty who's often happy to oblige. Against lefties this season Joey Bats has a ridiculous 1.140 OPS and .483 wOBA. Those numbers are out of this world and while luck has a little do with it, his career numbers tell a similar tale. Bautista is playing in U.S. Cellular, one of the best hitter's parks in baseball and facing Danks who owns a 4.74 xFIP. This is a great spot to take care of your three total bases slot in one swing. Justin Morneau What Morneau does to righties in Coors Field makes me think he's enjoyed his first season in the new digs. He has a .408 wOBA in that split at home to go along with a .939 OPS. And today he gets a chance to improve it against Dylan Axelrod who owns a career 4.77 xFIP. Axelrod is bad against everyone, but particularly righties to whom he allows an .850 OPS. It should be a good time in Coors tonight with everyone getting a chance to pad their stats. Hits Kole Calhoun Erick Aybar I went with both of these guys yesterday against Nick Martinez and I'm looking to roll it back again today. Calhoun did me solid, Aybar not so much though he did have the ball in play every time which was the main reason I had him going in the hits spot. Today's a little different in that Colby Lewis doesn't allow as much contact as Nick Martinez, but Lewis is still below average with a high 4's xFIP. Lewis walks and strikes out a few more...
