And it isn’t like Scherzer’s been some stiff or anything. He strikes out more than ten per nine and has a 3.11 xFIP. The problem is more that the Pirates rate out so high against righties, coming in at third in team wOBA. But there are plenty of cheap plays that make Scherzer easy to fit and I don’t see much else to like here in the way of arms. Consider Edwin Jackson coming super cheap if you want a little K upside. But this is GPP only and even then it’s not great. Late Stephen Strasburg - FD 9400 DK 9600 DD 19600 DFSTR 8400 And once again I fall down the rabbit hole, but how can we fade him on the late slate? The easy answer is we don’t. I’m one of the biggest Strasburg apologists around. His numbers this season remain ridiculous in every way except the ERA. His xFIP is in the mid 2’s and he’s striking out more than ten batters nine. The Mets rank 24th in the league in team wOBA against righties. Stras would be my top play even in a full slate of games. One a short night? It’s a no-brainer. John Lackey - FD 7600 DK 8400 DD 13100 DFSTR 5500 Padres have come around a bit over the last couple of weeks, no longer just rolling over and giving up before the start of every game. Lackey’s a solid if unspectacular cash game play pairing with Strasburg on two pitcher sites. Again, I’m all over Stras and am prepared to catch some heat for it. It’s fine. I’m a man of conviction. (Whatever that means) Lackey’s price and opponent combined with a decent peripherals make him in play. Consider Jake Odorizzi   Catchers Early Evan Gattis - FD 2800 DK 3400...

You'll like it as much as we do.   Total Bases Todd Frazier Devon Mesoraco Welcome back to Coors Field everyone. Been missing you something fierce. What with you cool, crisp air that creates a launching pad effect the likes of which we could only hope to recreate in some sort of zero gravity chamber. It's great. And hail to the visiting team walking in for a four game series. You'll be seeing these names quite a bit over the next few days I'm sure. Facing off today against Jorge de la Rosa, both Frazier and Mesoraco (the latter especially) are hitting lefties quite well and stand to have some big power upside going today. In terms of total bases, I suspect they'll get more than a few chances to rack 'em up. Time for another visit in the Rocky Mountain air.   Hits Jose Altuve The sample size is for sure small, but Allen Webster has been nothing short of an abomination since hitting the bit leagues. It's only fifteen innings, but he's walked more than he's struck out and has just basically been tattooed. Altuve on the other hand keeps his good times rolling right along. He is such a favorite for hits at this point it's kind of crazy. The LD% is solid, he never walks, never K's and has the ball in play early and often. Should be more of the same today. Scooter Gennett Scooter hates taking walks. I love that about the guy in this format. And his strike out rate of 12.8% is more than adequate in what we're looking for to profile hits on a given day. I don't love the matchup with Edwin...

Bad news: You need to wade through a bunch of crappy pitchers and matchups to find the winner. Jordan Zimmermann - FD 8700 DK 9200 DD 17550 SS 26700 I'm actually surprised our system doesn't like Zimmerman more today, but I suspect he'll be a fairly heavy cash game play because of the matchup and the park. The Mets rank in the bottom third of the league in team wOBA against righties and Zimmerman has been kind of great this season. He's striking out more than eight batters per nine and walking almost no one. Among qualified starters he has one of the lower BB%'s in the league. This is such a solid spot even against Big Fat Bartolo Colon. Jose Quintana - FD 7600 DK 8100 DD 16000 SS 22800 Has had a decent enough season with an xFIP in the mid three's and fine enough peripherals. Really trying to pick up some value on the margins and this price tier is a bit of a log jam. Could just as easily make case for Jered Weaver except Quintana has a better xFIP while Weaver has a better matchup. I'll take the dude over the opponent in the slightest of edges here. Ian Kennedy - FD 7600 DK 8300 DD 15750 SS 23500 Oof, doesn't feel great. But the Rockies aren't exactly the same mashing team on the road. In fact, away from Coors the Rockies are ranked 28th in team wOBA. That's such a significant drop and I'm willing to buy Kennedy not primarily, but heavily on this discrepancy. It's stark. Kennedy is fine enough, striking out his fair share while walking some too. It isn't all aces, but he's coming very cheap and this game going in San Diego means the power upside for the Rockies is severely limited. Kyle Lohse - FD 6900 DK 8000 DD 15200 SS 21400 Cubs are brutal against righties this season. Just brutal. They strike out more than 22% of the time in that split and rank 28th...

You'll like it as much as we do.   Total Bases David Ortiz Been some time since I put Papi out there but today seems like as good a day as any. He's struggled a bit this season thanks in part to a much lower Babip than his historical averages. This has driven down his triple slash line. It isn't the only problem, but it's worth mentioning. Today he faces average dude Mike Leake in a decidedly hitter's park. I'm buying on Papi for the first time in a while and think he offers some nice total bases upside in the early slate. Jay Bruce Going a little off board today, but since I focused on the early slate with Papi, I'll give you another guy you can pair with him during the early PM games. Bruce has struggled this season, but he faces low K, middling prospect Anthony Raunaudo. This is a solid spot for Bruce, hitting at the top of the lineup in a matchup that downgrades his chances at K-ing repeatedly. Looking for a little separation from the field with this pick and I think the upside is there.   Hits Jose Altuve I don't want to get in the habit of picking him every single day, but sometimes that kind of repetition is warranted. Such is the case with Altuve who is just have a crazy good season. his contact rate is awesome, he rarely walks and today the stars align as he faces a pitcher in Kyle Gibson who doesn't strike anyone out. The latter consideration is especially important as whatever happens with Altuve today, it's as heavy a favorite as you'll see to at least have...

He's a favorite against Ryan Vogelsong and the Giants who rank in the bottom third of the league against lefty pitching. They strike out a fair amount in that split and don't offer a ton in the way of power. Sale's been magnificent this season striking out more than ten batters per nine, walking less than two and carrying an xFIP well under three into this one. Even for the money I'm willing to roll him into cash games for the expected safety. Adam Wainwright - FD 9900 DK 9500 DD 20550 SS 29100 This is more a DraftKings pick. I wouldn't do him on FanDuel as he's so close in salary to Sale and the latter is a much better play. But where he's priced significantly lower than Sale I think you can consider him against the Marlins. His ERA is well outpacing his xFIP but the Marlins strike out a ton against righty pitching and Marlins Park keeps down power. Wainwright has been lucky this season for sure, but where the price is right you can roll him out there. The waters get pretty murky after these two dudes. Collin McHugh - FD 7400 DK 8700 DD 16800 SS 24100 He offers some upside, especially in the strikeout department against the Twins who K more than 21% of the time against righties. Minnesota can hit a little, so it isn't a dream matchup, but McHugh's racked up the K numbers this season putting down more than ten batters per nine and keeping his xFIP in the low threes. Makes a nice GPP play or a second starter on 2 SP sites. Your Hail Mary types: C.J. Wilson - FD 6800 DK 6300 DD 12600 SS 18200 Mike Minor - FD 6400 DK 6700 DD 11950 SS 17600 Both of these guys face teams near the bottom of the league against lefties in the Phillies and Dodgers. Both of these dudes can walk the ballpark and get bombed on the regular. But they...
