You'll like it as much as we do.   Total Bases Jose Abreu He's been destroying lefty pitching this season to the tune of a .995 OPS on that side of the split. This is thanks in large part to a crazy 43% Hr/FB ratio over his first season. The second number is clearly not sustainable over the long term so expect a dip in OPS. That being said, bad hitters wouldn't rack up an OPS this high without an inordinate amount of skill (luck or no luck). He faces T.J. House today, a lefty much worse against righty bats. Great ballpark and great matchup. Melky Cabrera Going a little off board from our system in this Melky pick. Not a ton of other players were standing out to me near the top of our board. And though Melky is a hits machine, I think you can put him in the total bases category against Rubby de la Rosa who struggles mightily against lefty bats. This is the better side of the split for Melky and he's a real tough out for righty pitching. He strikes out only 11% of the time and walks 7%. That leaves a lot of percentage points for contact.   Hits Robinson Cano Kyle Seager Nick Martinez has been a better pitcher of late, particularly in the strikeout area. But I'm considering him over his season-long numbers. And when you look at those, you want to target hitters against him. Martinez has only struck out 5.13 batters per nine and has an xFIP over five. Both Cano and Seager are near the top of the league in OPS against righties this season, and both their historical numbers back up this success. Cano is particularly difficult for...

Jeff Samardzija - FD 8100 DK 9200 DD 17100 DFSTR 5400 If you are looking to target just a little K upside this is your stop. The Astros are in the bottom half of the league in team wOBA against righties and strike out more than 23% of the time. I don't love the ballpark as Minute Maid does allow power to both sides of the plate at a higher than league average rate. Samardzija has been good, not great this season, but that's all you can ask for on a pitching day like this one. His K rate is right around eight batters per nine and he keeps his walks at an acceptable rate. The xFIP is in the low threes and I'm trying my damndest to find the positive plays today. Jake Odorizzi - FD 8100 DK 8500 DD 15700 DFSTR 9500 Has a tough matchup in a tougher park but Odorizzi has been a K machine this season and I don't mind buying the better pitcher in the worse matchup rather than the other way around. His K rate is over 10.5 per nine and the xFIP is in the mid three's. The O's are good against righties but Odorizzi's prices make the upside there and able to accept the possible downside. Francisco Liriano - FD 7100 DK 9700 DD 13800 DFSTR 8100 Eep. It's getting weird in here. You feel it? It doesn't feel great. The good news for Liriano is his strike out rate is over 9.5 batters per nine and his xFIP is about three quarters a run lower than his ERA at 3.43. That's the good news. The bad news is that the Cardinals come in the top half of the league against lefties. They do strike out some and their power is limited, but they can hit in dribs and drabs. Liriano could go six with some K's or he could get chased, but I like the upside on a weird day. Consider Kyle Lohse...

You'll like it as much as we do.   Total Bases Giancarlo Stanton This dude completely dominates lefty pitching. He's been among the league leaders in annihilating the inner souls off southpaws taking the mound against him. Stanton's 1.128 OPS against lefties to go with a 209 wRC+ are about as high as you'll ever see. Wade LeBlanc has actually been better against righties for his career. But that doesn't mean much considering he isn't good against anyone really. Stanton is a premium play in this spot today. Mike Trout What makes Trout such an enticing play on a day in/ day out basis is that he's platoon neutral so as long as he's facing someone average to below average he's in play to snag bases. He's having a down season only by his own Hall of Fame numbers. He's a favorite, as much as anyone on a regular basis, to collect enough total bases to win a tier. Jarred Cosart is pretty garbage-y and Trout is Trout.   Hits Robinson Cano This is of course assuming he plays today. Cano checked himself out of last game with dizziness, but if he plays today against Mikolas then Cano is a great play for a multi-hit game. Cano has been raking righties this season and the upshot is that he keeps his K% and BB% relatively low all things considered. Oh, and Mikolas stinks. He can't strike batters out with any consistency and though his ERA is higher than his xFIP, the latter isn't all that great. Here's to hoping Cano can give it a go in this one. Buster Posey Speaking of guys with great contact rates, Posey has a 8.6 K% and 7.1 BB% against lefties. That means 85% of...

If you want to go against the grain, though, here's the case. The Yanks are tough to strike out, but Sale's 158 Ks in 136 IP means it doesn’t really matter if you strike out or not, chances are good you are going to at some point against him. The Yankees are also the 2nd lowest scoring team in the AL, meaning this could be a nice long outing, and all of their best hitters prefer right handed pitching. So there's that. Also considered: Tentatively, Jered Weaver   Catchers Wilin Rosario - FD 3100 DK 3700 DD 7700 DFSTR 3500 Rosario has been on a horrific bender for a while, but most of that damage is against righties. He's still crushed left handed pitching for a .404 wOBA this year, and Brad Hand's 48 Ks and 32 BBs in 79 IP aren't going to fly under Colorado skies. Miguel Montero - FD 2400 DK 3400 DD 8300 DFSTR 5500 The price has bottomed out for Montero, mark my words. Our projection system has been asking us to trot him out there with great frequency, and if you followed the picks I wrote on Thursday night, it paid off with a monster night on a near minimum salary. While Kennedy is a much tougher pitcher, the price still remains a joke, just not so much a joke that it can unseat Rosario against a terrible lefty at home. Wilson Ramos - FD 2900 DK 3800 DD 8950 DFSTR 4800 Give me either of the two guys above, but if you're in the mood for safety, Ramos might be your guy. He's a high batting average guy for the position, and Vogelsong allows a lot of contact. I'm picturing solid, but unspectacular.   First Basemen Jose Abreu - FD 3800 DK 5000 DD 12450 DFSTR 9700 I mean, I know I only write the picks 2 nights a week, but this is somehow...

And he's facing a dude who can't pitch. From Doug: "No surprise here really. Stanton's having an incredible season posting a .970 OPS and that .267 ISO remains one of the elite numbers in the whole game. One of the big breakthroughs for him this year is his success against righty pitching as his 153 wRC+ and .395 wOBA show a dude seeing things pretty well in that side of the split. He's playing in Coors which as we all know has paper thin air and allows balls to travel out with alarming regularity. Don't like him as much as yesterday, but he's still the total bases favorite in the evening slate. Nolan Arenado On the other side of the diamond stands young Nolan Arenado, who has blossomed into a terrific hitter this year. His career .384 wOBA against left handed pitching is dynamite, and he'll eat Brad Hand and his 48 Ks against 32 BBs in 78 innings for lunch in the thin Coors air.   Hits Scooter Gennett The Scoot Man! A terrific hits play on most days due to the excellent batting average and the lack of walks, but a terrific play against the pitch to contact Vance Worley. Gennett is a total train wreck against left handed pitching, but he's truly elite against righties - posting a .342 batting average and a .387 wOBA. Jose Altuve Altuve is my favorite hits play on most days, but he gets dinged a little due to Bauer's K rate this season. Still! You have to love him against...
