This week the PGA Tour remains in Florida and heads to the home of Arnies Army, Bay Hill Club & Lodge, for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The big difference this week compared to last week's Honda Classic which kicked off the Florida swing is the field. As always, this event draws an elite field and this year welcomes nine of the Top 10, 23 of the Top 25, and 42 of the Top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings. The elite field will be challenged as Bay Hill has ranked as a Top 10 hardest course on tour(including majors!) in five of the last six years and ranked out as the hardest back in 2020. As with most Florida courses, water is a major defence and the win can also wreak havoc on golfers. Next up is the distance as it plays as one of the longest courses on the regular tour schedule and it starts with the Par 3's as they are some of the longest and hardest on tour listed at 199, 215, 221, and 231 yards. Combine that with five of Par 4's that come in over 450 yards and there is a well-above-average amount of long-iron approach shots here. Looking at the shotlink and strokes gained data over the last three years, this is another tournament where the correlations are very even across the board with Strokes Gained: Approach ranking at the top each season. Inside that bubble, I will also be weighing long iron approaches quite high in my model and bombers who are relatively accurate can also gain a ton on the field. With that said, let's look at the course, trends, and dig into some picks. The biggest news of the week was the Monday WD from defending champion Bryson DeChambeau who is dealing with a Saudi League conspiracy wrist injury. The good news is that we still get four of the Top 10 and 31 of the Top 50 players in the world including World #1 Jon Rahm making his debut at this event. The field will take on Bay Hill(Par 72 - 7,454 yards) which is one of the toughest tests on tour on ranking inside the Top 10 in terms of difficulty in four of the last five years. Much like last week, most of that difficulty comes from the water in play which forces a strong ball-striking effort if you are looking to make the cut and a near-elite one if you want to top the leaderboard come Sunday. The Florida swing continues this week as the PGA Tour visits Bay Hill Club & Lodge for the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational. We get another strong field led by Tyrrell Hatton(#6), Rory McIlroy(#8), and Patrick Reed(#9) who are all ranked inside the Top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings. Bay Hill is a course that will challenge the best golfers in world no matter the weather conditions. It has ranked inside the Top 15 hardest courses in terms of scoring average in each of the last four years and ranked #1 last year after four days of wind. It starts off the tee where we will see some "less than driver" gameplans with dangers in the form of water, well-placed bunkers in the 300-yard landing zone, and the need for positioning to have a clear shot at the greens on some of the dogleg holes. This has led to an average driving distance around 290 yards which then leads to a ton of long iron approach shots. This shows as over 29% of all approaches have come from the 200+ yard range(via FNGC). The event will also have a cut of Top 65 and ties after round two but despite that, I am heavily on stars and scrubs early in the week with so many values that stand out. Before getting into the picks, let's look at the course and the top stats in my model. Arnold Palmer Invitational Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Florida Par 72, 7381 Yards This week the PGA Tour heads to Orlando for the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. The field is smaller but still a solid 120 golfers. Tiger, who is not in the field this week, has dominated this course winning 8 times in his career. Bay Hill is another typical Florida course with sand, water and wind to protect itself. Matt Every took down last year's tournament with a -13, narrowly beating Keegan Bradley's -12. A score of -13 has won the tournament 3 years in a row and before that Martin Laird won with a -8 in 2011. The fairways and greens are tough to hit so accuracy will be important off the tee. Distance does't seem to be at a premium so I will use Total Driving this week which is a combination of Distance and Accuracy. Also, when you look at the Par 5's the longest is a 525 yards so I will be using Par 5 performance as a key stat as well. With the rough usually pretty tough here and with the amount of bunkers in play I will also consider scrambling as well. Here is a list of the stats I am looking at this week. Total Driving Scrambling Strokes Gained:Tee to Green Par 5 Performance Tier 1 Targets (DK Price $9000-Max) Henrik Stenson - $12,500 (Vegas Odds – 12/1) First on my list this week comes before Draftkings pricing is released. I am picking Henrik no matter the price this week and I don't think he will be the most expensive(Rory, bubba). Henrik has made 6/6 cuts here in his career with some nice recent finishes(2014-T5, 2013-T8, 2012-T15). His current form is also where #3 in the world should be with a solo 4th at the Valspar and a T4 at WGC. He doesn't have enough rounds in 2015 to compile stats but his 2014 stats back up his World Rank and current form. Total Driving - 2014(2nd) Scrambling - 2014(171) SG:Tee to Green - 2014(11) Par 5 Perf - 2014(91) Hideki Matsyuma - $9,600 (Vegas Odds – 29/1) As a stats guy, Hideki Matsyuma always seems to fall under the radar for me.
