FanDuel was one of the first players in the daily fantasy sports market and at this point are the biggest in the industry. They run some of the biggest entry tournaments and games and have a huge (understatement) base of users.

Rosters and Salary

FanDuel’s roster construction is some of the easiest and most intuitive in the business. It is a straightforward approach to salary-based lineup construction and easy for new users to get the hang of. FanDuel’s rosters:

Scoring

FanDuel’s scoring system is much simpler and straightforward than other sites. Scores are generally lower, but they are intuitive. Baseball for instance uses just your basic pitching stats (IP, K, W) while hitters are counted on a 1pt scale (i.e. Single=1pt, Double=2pts, etc). The same can be said for the other sports as well. Without delving too deeply into their scoring, FanDuel is one of the easiest sports to track mentally because of the scoring. This makes it very easy for new users and players to onboard because they aren’t caught up in some of the minutiae scoring from other sites.

 

Game Selection, Stakes and Rake

The buy-ins for their leagues range from free all the way up to $1,000+ so there is room for bankrolls of all sizes. In terms of game selection, FanDuel offers large entry tournaments with the biggest guaranteed prize pool (GPPs) in the business as well as smaller leagues and a big head-to-head (H2H) selection. They also offer 3X, 4X and 5X games to diversify your game selection.
It’s imperative to be conscious of rake when selecting a site or games. Rake can be the difference between a profitable or a break-even run. Here is a table outlining FanDuel’s rake set up.

You can see that as you climb in stakes the rake becomes less of a percentage of your buy-in. This is a key component in understanding your long term viability in DFS. While this rake is a bit high on the lower ends, it is somewhat industry standard.

 

Mobile App

FanDuel has a sleek and user friendly app that allows for making lineups while on the move. It’s easy to select games and join contests from your phone or tablet. The one downside to the app is that is difficult to export a lineup to a number of different entries. Otherwise the app experience is great.

 

Other notes

There are a few downsides to FanDuel’s model. The interface is a little behind some of the newer sites and while they have made changes recently it is still lagging a bit in terms of fluidity. This means that exporting lineups to multiple leagues or seeing multiple lineups in one screen can be tricky.

Also, while FanDuel’s pricing is easy for the beginner, they are often a little slower to price correct on some of the more obvious plays. This has become better of late, but there are still some inefficiencies there. That is mostly splitting hairs, but worth mentioning.
