Waste Management Phoenix Open This week the PGA Tour heads to Scottsdale, Arizona for the Waste Management Phoneix Open. After back to back weeks with multi-course rotations we get just one course this week, TPC Scottsdale, which is most famously known for the iconic Par 3, 16th hole which is completely surrounded by seating and setup with a stadium atmosphere. The event also draws a strong field again this year as three of the Top 10(Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele), seven of the Top 20, and 23 of the Top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings. Overall, the course is fairly generous off the tee but the longer hitters will also have to be accurate to avoid the bunkers in key landing areas. Looking at some of the quotes from players over the years(via Future of Fantasy Golfanac), the rough can be played from so bombers really just need to avoid those bunkers and the rough is not very penal which also leads to a bomb and wedge gameplan. Where players separate themselves comes down to the approach shots to the receptive greens which, as you can see below, will come heavily from the 150-175 yard range and with a winning score average of -16 over the last five years I will also be heavily weighing Birdie or Better %. While there are only three Par 5's on the course, they do produce around 33% of the overall birdies on a yearly basis and with the eagle rate I will also be using Par 5 Birdie or Better %. There is one Par 4 under 400 yards(driveable 17th) and then five that fall between 400 and 450 yards and five between 450 and 500 yards so I will be looking at overall Par 4 Scoring. The weather this week is intriguing in that the first two days before the...

Last week was a "throw out your models" kind of week when looking at the winner as 31-year-old Adam Long put together a tremendous final round 65 to edge out Phil Mickelson and Adam Hadwin by one stroke to grab his first career victory. This week the PGA Tour stays in California and heads slightly south to San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open. There are two courses used for the event but unlike last week the cut of Top 70 and ties will come after the second round as normal with the final two rounds being played at the host course, Torrey Pines South. The field is one of the strongest of the season so far as it includes World #1 player, Justin Rose, four of the Top 10, and 24 of the Top 50 players in the World. While native Phil Mickelson has decided to skip the event, we do get Tiger Woods making his season debut at a course where he has won a whopping seven times over his career(last in 2013). The host course, Torrey Pines South, is annually one of the toughest tests on Tour at a whopping 7,698 yards long(longest on tour). Torrey Pines North used to be a nice break for the players in the first two days but since being renovated in 2016, has come a lot closer to the South Course in terms of scoring although only 7,258 yards. From a stats model perspective, I will be focusing on the South Course as it will be used for three of the four rounds for those golfers who make the cut. The first thing I am looking at is not only Strokes Gained: Off the Tee but an emphasis on Driving Distance. After that, I am looking at Strokes Gained: Approach and putting more emphasis on Proximity from...

Daily Fantasy PGA Picks and Betting Guide for DraftKings & FanDuel – Desert Classic

It is one of the most popular Pro-Am events of the season and with that comes a multi-course rotation. For the fourth straight year, the Pete Dye PGA West Stadium Course will play host with the PGA West Nicklaus Course and LA Quinta Country Club also used. Each player will get one round on each course the first three days which will be followed by a cut and a final round on Sunday that will be played at the Stadium Course. All three courses are shorter Par 72 setups with La Quinta CC and the Nicklaus Tournament Course both playing easier than the Stadium Course. Looking at past leaderboards a small trend appears that the preferred draw would be to play one of the two easier courses on day one and two followed by a third round at the Stadium Course. Not only does it give you a chance to get off to a hot start on the easier courses but it also gives those golfers a chance to play the more difficult Stadium Course on back to back days which would be an advantage no doubt. While the Stadium Course is the more difficult test, all three courses are set up more on the easy side to accommodate the vast number of amateurs playing in the first three days. This makes the event turn into a shootout as we have seen the winning score reach -20 or better every single...

Daily Fantasy PGA Picks and Betting Guide for DraftKings & FanDuel – Sony Open

Sony Open The first tournament of 2019 was an exciting one as Xander Schauffele edged out Gary Woodland by one stroke with an incredible 11 under par 62 in the final round. Rounding out the Top 5 were Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Marc Leishman, and Rory McIlroy. This week the PGA Tour remains in Hawaii but travels to Waialae Country Club in Honolulu for the Sony Open. The field is never elite here but this season we do have two of the Top 5 (Justin Thomas & Bryson DeChambeau) and 20 of the Top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings so we should be in for another exciting week of golf. The course is much different from last week as Waialae is a Par 70 setup that reaches just over 7,000 yards. It is somewhat of an old-school setup where golfers can't just go out and bomb as far as possible and wedge it on the green. The fairways are narrow and the rough can be very penal in areas which not only puts emphasis on hitting the fairways but also on placement to have a shot at hitting the greens. Because of this, we can expect the less accurate and/or longer hitters in the field to implement a "less than driver" approach off the tee. After getting the ball in play off the tee, golfers will need to be on point with their mid to long iron approaches to these fast Bermuda greens. The Strokes Gained: Approach metric is where players have most separated themselves from the pack over the past few years. One thing that is similar to the Plantation Course is the low scoring as the average winning score over the last five years is -20 so as with most weeks, Birdie or Better % will be heavily weighed. Let's now take a look at the course overview...

Daily Fantasy PGA Picks and Betting Guide for DraftKings & FanDuel – Sentry Tournament of Champions

Grab your copy today and edge out the competition.   Sentry Tournament of Champions Christmas and New Years have come and gone and that means it is time to get back to the DFS PGA grind. The fall season was an exciting stretch of golf that closed with two golfers ending long winless streaks as Matt Kuchar won the Mayakoba Classic and his first tourney since 2014 and Charles Howell III won the RSM Classic which was his first win since 2007. We also saw two first time winners in Kevin Tway(Safeway Open) and Cameron Champ(Sanderson Farms Championship) while Brooks Koepka(CJ Cup) and Bryson DeChambeau(Shriners Open) continued their dominance after seasons with two and three wins respectively. The 2019 portion of the PGA Tour season kicks off, as always, with somewhat of an All-Star game as each player who hoisted a trophy last season is invited to the Plantation Course in Kapalua for the Sentry Tournament of Champions. There is not much difficulty at this course as demonstrated by the winning scores which average -23 over the last five years. The fairways are huge and the greens are very easy to hit so, for the most part, this turns into a second shot and birdie fest. Because of this, I will be looking heavily at Strokes Gained: Approach and Birdie or Better % for my stats model. The other thing I noticed when breaking down the last few years leaderboards is that the winner has separated himself in Par 4 Scoring in a big way so that will also be near the top of my stats this week. This event is also a no-cut event with just 36 players so upside is key not only when constructing GPP lineups but cash games as well. Separating yourself in GPP's is a lot harder with a small field but one of the best ways to do this is by leaving some salary on the...

Daily Fantasy PGA Picks and Betting Guide for DraftKings & FanDuel – Mayakoba Golf Classic

Mayakoba Golf Classic This week the PGA Tour heads back outside the US for a trip to the El Camaleon Golf Course in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico for the Mayakoba Golf Classic. The field isn't great but is headlined with Rickie Fowler(9th in OWGR), Jordan Spieth(14th in OWGR), and Tony Finau(15th in OWGR) as three of the Top 10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings teeing it up this week. The course is a shorter Par 71 that stretches out just under 7,900 yards and with that lack of distance and emphasis hitting the fairways, we will likely see a lot of golfers clubbing down to 3-woods or irons. This would be the reason why the average fairways hit (62-65%) is higher than you would expect with smaller landing areas. Looking at the hole breakdowns, there is a very short Par 3 and two average length Par 3's and where the course gets difficult is on the Par 4's as five of 11 of them are between 450 and 500 yards and have played as the hardest holes on the course over the last five years, by far. I will be looking closely at performance from this range using the Fantasy National Golf Club tools as the players can separate themselves from the field on these holes. The other thing I will be weighing along with Birdie or Better %(low winning scores) is Par 5 scoring as around 35% of all birdies will come on these three holes. The Course El Camaleon Golf Course Par 71 - 6,987 Yards **Click the pic above to link to a hole by hole breakdown from PGATour.com** Last Five Winners Patton Kizzire(-19) Pat Perez(-21) Graeme McDowell(-18) Charley Hoffman(-17) Harris English(-21) Top Stats in the Model Strokes Gained: Ball Striking Par 4 Scoring from 450-500 Yards Par 5 Scoring  Birdie or Better % One little note...
