This week the best players in the world head to St. Andrews and the Old Course for the 150th OPEN Championship. Each major championship is unique in its own way and with the OPEN there are many starting with links setup where the weather can play a huge role. The early forecast shows four days of hot and dry weather combined with regular winds in the 12-18 mph range with gusts in the 20-25 mph range. The most important thing with links golf, and especially at the Old Course, is imagination as there are so many different ways to play shots into these huge greens. This definitely pushes the narrative of anyone can win as there is no one player type who excels here, especially with the dried-out, fast fairways which helps the shorter hitters s their drives should get lots of extra run leading to shorter irons. With the largest greens golfers will see all year, Strokes Gained: Approach is one of my top stats at just hitting the green won't exactly get it done. If you are wanting to break it down more, Proximity from the mid ranges(125-150 and 150-175 yards) will be the key zones I will be focusing on this week. Right there with SG: APP this week is Par 4 scoring as the Old Course is made up of 14 Par 4's with just two Par 3's and two Par 5's. The strategy for building lineups at these majors...

He put together one of his best all-around performances of the season gaining at least 3.5 strokes in every area and shooting sub 70 in all four rounds highlighted by final-round 62! He needed all of it, beating out a stacked Sunday leaderboard that included Finau, JT, Rose, Burns, and Canadian Corey Conners to name a few. The best golfers in the world, yes even the LIV Golf guys, will now take on one of the toughest tests in golf, The U.S. Open. This year's venue is a bit different from the traditional lengthy U.S. Open stops in the rotation as the players head to The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. The course is a Par 70 that stretches just over 7,200 yards on the scorecard but does have multiple sets of tees to not only change the distance but also the angle at which the players will attack the holes. While the length may not match other venues, the difficulty should with narrow fairways lined with trees, tons of bunkering key landing areas, and hazards. There are also quite a few holes with winding fairways and put it all together and total driving will be at high demand, with accuracy a bit more important than distance. After the demanding tee shot on most of the holes, golfers then face...

The Course St. George's Golf & Country Club Par 70 - 7,014 Yards Greens - Bentgrass **Click the image above to see a hole by hole breakdown from PGATour.com** This week the PGA Tour heads north of the border for the first time in three years for RBC Canadian Open. Canada's national open rotates courses yearly and this year will visit St. George's Golf and Country Club which is annually ranked inside the World's Top 100 and Canada's Top 5 courses. While the field does include World #1 Scottie Scheffler and four others ranked inside the Top 10, it is pretty weak overall considering the third major, the U.S. Open next week. Another big name missing is RBC-backed Dustin Johnson who has taken ALL the money and joined the LIV Golf Tour that kicks off in London this week. Those who chose to play in Canada this week, get a beauty of a classic style course with St. George's Par 70/7,014 yard setup. It has narrow, tree-lined fairways that will require players to lean more on accuracy off the tee than distance, especially with challenging rough(3.5" on average). On approach, golfers face small undulated bentgrass greens so not only are we locked in on Strokes Gained: Approach this week, we should also be looking closely at Proximity from 175-200 and 200+ yards as four of the five Par 3's are 200+ yards and six of the Par 4's are 450+ yards. With all that said, let's get into the picks. Top Tier Targets Cameron Smith World Golf Ranking (#4) Vegas Odds (14/1) Draftkings ($10,300) FanDuel ($11,600) I will most definitely have exposure to at least three of the top 5 priced players in this weak field but leading the way for me is Cameron Smith who has been on a steady trajectory up the world golf rankings....

Pitchers Tony Gonsolin FD - P 9800 DK - SP 9100 Opponent - NYM (Taijuan Walker) Park - LAD FD - 30.32 DK - 15.62 The pitching options are pretty sub-par tonight and at the top it comes down to three good, not great options who get average-at-best matchups. I slightly lean Gonsolin here due to his extreme consistency lately as he has tallied 20+ DK/33+ FD points in five straight and six of his last seven games. It can always be risky with the Dodgers pitching staff but more good news as Gonsolin has got up to 90 or more pitches in three straight. I can make a case for and against all three of the top pitchers tonight but Gonsolin is my favourite and top guy in all formats. Keegan Thompson FD - P 7700 DK - RP 6100 Opponent - STL (Matthew Liberatore) Park - CHC FD - 29.88 DK - 14.86 The optimal build on this slate is likely going to be stacking as many bats as possible and that means travelling to the bottom of the salary for a cheap SP2 on DraftKings. It feels like the chalk play will be Chris Flexen against the Orioles but I am pivoting to Keegan Thompson who has been stretched out into a starter's role and has been terrific. He comes into tonight having held opponents to just four earned runs over his last four appearances(three starts) while striking out 14 and walking just three. The matchup doesn't look great at first glance but the Cards are just league average(.309 wOBA/102 wRC+) against righties so at this price, I will take a shot in all formats. Catcher/First Base C.J. Cron FD 4200 DK 5500 Opponent - ATL (Ian Anderson) Park - ATL FD - 12.53 DK - 9.41 Let's kick things off with a trip to Coors and while I prefer the road Braves tonight, I am still wanting some pieces of the Rockies and it starts with C.J. Cron. Despite striking out more and walking less than he did in his first year in Colorado, he is off to a better start hitting over .300 with 13 home runs(4 at this time last year) and is sporting an elite .397 wOBA and 143 wRC+. It's a steep price, but he gets a plus matchup against Ian Anderson who has given up four earned runs in each of...

The Course Muirfield Village Golf Club Par 72 - 7,533 Yards Greens - Bentgrass **Click the image above to see a hole by hole breakdown from PGATour.com** Previous Five Winners 2021 - Patrick Cantlay(-13) 2020 - Jon Rahm(-9) 2020 Workday - Collin Morikawa(-19) 2019 - Patrick Cantlay(-19) 2018 - Bryson DeChambeau(-15) This week the PGA Tour heads to Muirfield Village Golf Club for the Memorial Tournament. You may remember last year with Jon Rahm dominating on Friday(65) and Saturday(64) to take a six-shot lead only to be told post-round he tested positive for the vid and was forced to withdraw. Patrick Cantlay along with Collin Morikawa inherited the lead with Cantlay going on to win his second Memorial in four years. You will also notice two entries for course history on sheet this week for 2020 and that was during the pandemic when Muirfield hosted the Workday Charity Open weeks before the Memorial. Muirfield Village ranks as one of the hardest non-major venues on Tour and that has been especially true over the last two trips where it's ranked 10th and 2nd hardest(stroke average) and that includes the majors! While some of the fairways are fairly forgiving the rough is anything but listed at an average of 4 inches. This means golfers can't just bomb and gouge if they plan on contending for a trophy. I am looking at golfers with a complete game off the tee(total driving/SG: OTT) and leaning towards accuracy over distance and for those players who are shorter off the tee, I will also be focusing heavily on long iron play. That iron play(SG:APP) will also be at the top of my model this week at a course that is often referred to as a "second shot" type course. With all that said, let's get into my core plays for the week. Top Targets...

Pitchers Shohei Ohtani FD 9900 DK 8700 Opponent - TOR (Hyun Jin Ryu) Park - TOR FD - 39.01 DK - 21.25 The options up top are not very appealing tonight so let's get things started with Ohtani who easily tops our PTS/$ projections. He has been elite on the mound lately averaging six innings per start while holding opponents to just five earned runs(1.50 ERA), striking out 33% of batters, and averaging 26.3 DK/ FD points per game. I am not in love with the matchup against the Jays but the good news is Shohei is catching them at the right time as they rank bottom three in runs scored, wOBA, and wRC+ since the start of May. All things considered, Ohtani is our top pitcher and in play in all formats. Martin Pérez FD 9700 DK 8300 Opponent - OAK (Frankie Montas) Park - OAK FD - 31.28 DK - 15.55 This is a bit of a flashback season for Perez who has returned to Texas, after stops in Boston and Minnesota and is playing some of the best ball of his career. Since being limited in his first two starts, he has been near elite holding opponents to just three earned runs over his last six starts with a 31:8 strikeout to walk ratio. While the upside is somewhat limited with a lack of K's(20% K rate) he gets a terrific matchup against the A's who are ranked bottom five in runs scored, wOBA, wRC+, and strike out at the 6th highest(24.2%) rate overall. Perez is an excellent mid-tier option to pair with Ohtani and still leaves you lots of salary left for bats. Catcher/First Base C.J. Cron FD 3900 DK 6100 Opponent - WSH (Patrick Corbin) Park - WSH FD - 9.75 DK - 7.33 While it seems wild to start things off with Cron who is the most expensive option at first, he has actually been better than most of the superstars at the position(Vladdy, Freeman) to start the year. Cron leads all first basemen in home runs(12), is 2nd in RBI(33), and 4th in wRC+(151) and while he has been better at Coors he gets an elite matchup that cannot be ignored. He faces lefty Patrick Corbin who enters with an ugly Ag ERA after giving up 10 earned runs over his last two starts and more alarming is the fact he has given up...
