This week the Tour heads to the desert and TPC Scottsdale for the 2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Since the return of the PGA Tour last summer, there have been few events where I felt things were different with limited or no fans but this week is a big one. A four-time winner of the PGA Tour event of the year, the WMPO annually attracts hundreds of thousands of fans but will have a different feel in 2021 with a limit of 5000-ish fans per day. In comparison, that is about as many as you would see around the tee box at the Par 3, 16th hole(haha). Either way, there is a golf tournament to played and that means we have some analysis and picks to get into. One thing we can be happy about right off the bat is the strong field headlined by five of the World's Top 10 golfers in Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, and the defending champion, Webb Simpson. The course is a par 71 setup that stretches out just over 7,200 yards and is right around Tour average in terms of difficulty ranking inside the Top 20 hardest courses just twice over the last seven years. The fairways are on the difficult side to hit producing a field average around 55% over the last five years. The good news for players is that the rough is not very penal so bombers can have a slight advantage if their short game is on. When it comes to the greens, they are one of the most unique on Tour as...

This week starts with a bit of a rant as I am pretty disappointed in myself for not playing the Pete Dye narrative more last week. Let's break it down using Fantasy National Golf Club and look at Tee to Green rankings(all players on Tour) on Pete Dye courses(L50 rounds) and their finish last week: #2 Si Woo Kim - Won #5 Paul Casey - T8 #8 Patrick Cantlay - 2nd #13 Francesco Molinari - T8 #16 Byeong Hun An - T8 #21 Russell Knox - T16 That is about as far as I will go as the knife just keeps cutting deeper as these are players who were either in my player pool or at least are consistently throughout the season(outside of Molinari). Moving on! This week the Tour stays in Cali and moves to Torrey Pines, right outside of San Diego, for the Farmers Insurance Open. Like last week, players will have a multi-course rotation to deal with as they will play one round on each of the South and North courses on Thursday and Friday. Those players who make the cut will then play out the tournament on the South course on Saturday and Sunday. Speaking of the South course, it will also host the 2021 U.S. Open in June. Headling the field is World #2, Jon Rahm who is back after a Monday WD last week following a supposed injury in the gym. Joining him are two others ranked inside the Top 10(Schauffele, Mcilroy) and 24 of the Worlds Top 50 golfers. Being a Seaside course, the weather is always a huge factor in the winning score so...

As expected, we saw a ton of scoring at the Sony Open in Hawaii last week as Kevin Na took home the trophy with a -21 winning score. This week the PGA Tour heads back to the mainland and La Quinta, California for The American Express. For those who follow golf closely(pretty much anyone reading this), this is the event that kicks off pro-am season and is usually a three-course rotation with a 54-hole cut. With COVID restrictions, there will be no Pro-Am and there will only be two courses(PGA West Stadium & Nicklaus Tournament) used with a normal cut after two rounds. This is the point of the article where you fist pump in glory as no one really likes the Pro-Am, do they?? The field saw am early WD from Jon Rahm and while it is on the weaker side overall, does feature Patrick Cantlay, Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka, and Matthew Wolff, all of which rank inside the Top 15 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Before getting into the picks, let's take a look at the course's, previous winners, and then some key stats from my model. The Course PGA West TPC Stadium Course Par 72 - 7,113 Yards Greens - Bermuda PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course Par 72 - 7,159 Yards Greens - Bermuda Previous Five Winners 2020 - Andrew Landry(-26) 2019 - Adam Long(-26) 2018 - Jon Rahm(-22) 2017 - Hudson Swafford(-20) 2016 - Jason Dufner(-25) Top Stats in the Model Birdie or Better % No better place to start the model this week as both courses have ranked inside the Top 10-15 easiest every season. The PGA Tour stays in Hawaii this week but jumps north to O'ahu Island for the Sony Open and the first full-field event of 2021. That field is led by three of the World's Top 10 golfers(Webb Simpson, Patrick Reed, Adam Scott) but is a little weaker overall with just 17 of the World's Top 50 teeing it up this week. The host course, Waialae Country Club, is a Par 70 listed at 7,044 yards on the scoreboard. The fairways may not be nearly as wide as last week but the cut-makers are still hitting over 65% fairways on average over the last five years. This also elevates the average GIR%(around 70%) on a yearly basis which then also produces some very low scores. Outside of last year when the first two rounds were very windy leading to a lower -11 winning score, the winner has made it to at least -17 in seven straight events. For fantasy, remember with this full-field event, we have a cut of Top 65 and ties after the first two rounds. For cash games, this means we are back to trying to get all six golfers through to the weekend which I like trying to do with a balanced build. In GPP, we are also going to need 6/6 to cash anything substantial but construction can be much different as we want to maximize our upside which also can present more risk. Before getting into the picks lets look at the course and a few of my core stats in my model. The Course Waialae Country Club Par 70 - 7,044 Yards Greens - Bermuda **Click the...

We did get to see Charlie Woods look like the next coming of....well his dad and also got to see him trash talk Justin Thomas which was wildly entertaining. It was Thomas and his father who got the last laugh, however, winning the event. We kick off(sorry NFL still rolling) the 2021 portion of the season with a handshake of sorts as the Tournament of Champions is invite-only to winners from the previous calendar year. This year's field has 42 players including eight of the Top 10 players in the Official World Golf Rankings and each of the last four winners(JT, Xander, DJ, JT). For fantasy, this is a no-cut event so all 42 players will play four rounds and this can lead to a much more viable stars and scrubs strategy. You don't have to worry about a slow start derailing your lineup on Thursday and with a limited field the scrubs are not actually scrubs. Before getting into the picks, let's take a look at the course, scorecard, and some of my key stats. The Course Plantation Course at Kapalua Par 73 - 7,596 Yards Greens -Bermuda **Click the image above to see a hole by hole breakdown from PGATour.com** Previous Five Winners 2020 - Justin Thomas(-14) 2019 - Xander Schauffele(-23) 2018 - Dustin Johnson(-24) 2017 - Justin Thomas(-22) 2016 - Jordan Spieth(-30) Top Stats in the Model Strokes Gained: Approach/Proximity With some of the widest, most forgiving fairways on Tour, it really takes the emphasis off hitting them(as everyone will) and shifts the focus to who...

Overall, the field is fairly week in terms of what we have seen recently but is headlined by two stars in Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka. This also marks the final official PGA Tour event of 2020 with the next being the tournament of champions in early Janauary. Let's take a look at the scorecard, the most recent winners, and some key stats for this week and then jump into the picks. The Course El Camaleon Golf Club - Playa Del Carmen, MEX Par 71 - 7,017 Yards Greens - Paspalum **Click the image above to see a hole by hole breakdown from PGATour.com** Previous Five Winners(by season) 2020 - Brendon Todd(-20) 2019 - Matt Kuchar(-22) 2018 - Patton Kizzire(-19) 2017 - Pat Perez(-21) 2016 - Graeme McDowell(-18) Top Stats in the Model Strokes Gained: Approach/Opportunities Gained Looking at the list of past winners or even the past leaderboards, you will notice none of them are bombers off the tee. The fairways are narrow but the rough is not very penal at all which puts a ton of emphasis on the approach shots. Strokes Gained: Approach is my top-weighted stat and can also be broken down into Proximity ranges which depend on the individual golfer you are looking at. Birdie or Better % The winning score here has been around -20 each year which naturally puts birdie or better % right near the top of my list. Par 4 Scoring There are only three Par 5's this week and they play as three of the...
