After seeing each of the Top 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings last week at the Genesis Invitational, we see none of them this week and just 12 of the Top 50 teeing it up at one of the toughest courses on Tour. That is partly due to the Bear Trap(Holes 15-16-17) which is the fourth hardest three-hole stretch(non-majors) dating back to 2007. There is an abundance of water(ask Ryan Palmer who has 17 water balls on the Bear Trap) which puts an emphasis on precision tee to green. On these tough scoring courses with danger lurking at every corner, it takes a full tee-to-green game if you want to be on the leaderboard on Sunday and contend for a win. For fantasy, here are a couple of my top-weighted stats in my model: Strokes Gained: Ball Striking This is a very broad stat in my model that can be broken down different ways for different courses. This week, it starts with Strokes Gained: Off the Tee with danger lurking seemingly everywhere and driving accuracy(fairways gained on Fantasy National) should be the focal point. The boost important part and highest weighted part of my ball striking model is Strokes Gained: Approach which is highly correlated to winning year after year. Breaking it down a little further, I am looking at Proximity ranges from 150-175 and 175-200 yards which makes up almost 50% of all approach shots here...

The only thing that could have made it better was being there to see not only the win but the chaos of raining beer cans on Hole #16 with a hole in one on both Saturday(Sam Ryder) and Sunday(Carlos Ortiz) as well as the crazy celebrations by Joel Dahmen and Harry Higgs after birdie putts. Overall, another tremendous WM Phoenix Open. This week the players face a much harder test as an elite field, which includes each of the OWGR Top 10, heads to Riviera Country Club for the Genesis Invitational. Riviera has rated as a Top 10 hardest scoring courses in three of the last four years and that includes the Majors! The course is demanding off the tee(average around 51% fairways hit last 5 years) and just as demanding on approach(average 58% GIR last 5 years) despite average-sized greens. On the greens, the golfers will once again see firm and fast poa greens. My stats model on the sheet this week is heavily geared towards form and players with a solid tee to green game. I don't think hitting the fairway is essential(Top 10 finishers last year averaged under 50%) but if targeting a less than accurate driver just have a closer look at rough proximity or good drive %. This usually goes hand in hand with the longer hitters as they...

As it usually does, this event has drawn another strong field which includes World #1 Jon Rahm and six of the World's Top 10 golfers. TPC Scottsdale is an average length(7,261 yards) Par 71 set in the Arizona desert which comes into play almost every hole with native areas lurking not far from the fairways. While hitting the fairway is always important in giving yourself consistent shots at hitting greens and making birdies, it is the approach shot that has the highest correlation in my research and leads the way in my ball striking model. Par 4 scoring is also about double that of par 5 scoring as there is only three Par 5's on this course. Overall, there are always different ways to win a golf tournament and it comes down to who checks the most boxes mixed with a little luck. Let's get into the picks. Top Targets Justin Thomas/Jon Rahm They are in a tier of their own this week checking every box and while I will exposure to both, I am slightly leaning JT who could give us some leverage this week in terms of ownership. Neither have won here in 13 combined appearances but both have excellent course history. Rahm has not only made the cut all six times but he has also not finished worse than T16 while JT has...

It starts this week with the American Express which is back to a three-course rotation this year. That means each player in the field will play one round on each of PGA West Stadium Course, PGA West Nicklaus Course, and La Quinta Country Club Thursday through Saturday. Those who make the cut(Top 65 & ties) will then play the final round on the PGA West Stadium Course. All three courses are Par 72's under 7,200 yards and all have ranked outside the Top 30 in difficulty in each of the last five years. The course I will concentrate on for my stats model this week will be the Stadium Course which will be used twice including the final round. It is a Pete Dye design so ball-striking is once again at a premium with emphasis on hitting fairways off the tee and hitting the below-average-sized greens. In general, I don't really narrow my player pool down based on the order they play the three courses for the full-tourney contests but one narrative that gets thrown around is playing the Stadium Course in Round 3 as to play it on back-to-back days. Do with that what you will. As for the weather forecast, we will have to monitor leading up to lock but as of now, Saturday looks to be very window all day while the other three days appear calm...

The field got a little weaker on Monday with Bryson DeChambeau dropping out with wrist soreness. With that, the field is led by last week's winner Cameron Smith who joined a shortlist of players who have won both Hawaii events(Furyk, Els, Singh, ZJ, JT) and also broke into the OWGR Top 10 for the first time in his young career. The host course, as it has been since the inaugural event back in 1971, is Waialae Country Club. It will be a much different test than last week in that we move from a Par 73 with wide fairways and some of the largest greens on Tour to a Par 70 with tight fairways that include several doglegs and average-sized greens. It's very much a positioning style golf course and for that I will rely heavily on Strokes Gained: Ball Striking in my model. The second stat I will be looking at in my model this week is Par 4 scoring which becomes a focus on a Par 70 with just two Par 5's. Looking at last year, it also had an extremely high correlation to success. Finally, the other main stat in my model is Birdie or Better % as the winning score has averaged right around -20 which even includes the very windy 2020 event in which Cameron Smith won. This year's forecast looks very similar to last week which saw winds...

While I did enjoy the break, in a sport that has very few of them, I am so ready for the 2022 portion of the PGA Tour season. Got my season-long industry draft done, one and done's ready to roll, and it's now time to kick it off(sorry still got NFL in my head). The year starts with a celebration of 39 winners from last season as they all meet in Kapalua for the annual Tournament of Champions. It is a bit of a laid-back extension of the holiday season for some and no better way to get started than a birdie fest in Hawaii. The fairways at the Plantation Course are huge which have generated a 79% driving accuracy average over the last five years. This combined with monster-sized greens has me automatically relying on Strokes Gained: Approach as my top stat in my model. It's definitely not the only way to skin the cat, however, as Harris English hoisted the hardware last year on the back of a monster putting performance(+6.8 strokes). Finally, this is a no-cut event meaning all golfers will play all four rounds, and with a limited field, a stars and scrub build will be very popular. The "scrubs" aren't really scrubs when we are talking about a select group of players who won on Tour last season. No matter what direction you head, you are going to need birdies and lots of them as the winning score has been in the minus 20's in six of the last...
