WGC Dell Match Play This week the PGA Tour takes a break from stroke play and heads to Austin Country Club for the World Golf Championships Dell Technologies Match Play. This will be the fourth straight trip to Austin CC and that is what I will be looking at mostly from a course history standpoint this week. I will look at overall match play history as well as the strategies are different from a stroke-play event playing against just one player at a time instead of an entire field. The 64-man field is once again loaded with nine of the Top 10 and 48 of the Top 50 players in the world teeing it up. The only two missing from the Top 50 are #8 Rickie Fowler and #29 Adam Scott. The format has the 64 players split into 16 groups of four with group play taking place from Wednesday to Friday. The player with the best record in each group will move on to the Round of 16 on Saturday where it will be bracketed and single knockout with the final 18 hole match being played Sunday afternoon. For fantasy, scoring is obviously different this week as well so let's refresh how the points are handed out. As you can see there is no scoring for birdies or placing but instead points for winning and halving a hole. Then bonuses for matches won, matches halved, three consecutive holes won, and no holes lost in a match. The holes not played just means if a player win 4 & 2 he gets 1.6 points for each hole remaining plus the matches won bonus. My strategy going into this will be to target golfers in favorable groupings that could potentially dominate one or two matches getting you a ton of bonus points. Valspar Championship It was a crazy final round at the PLAYERS where as many as a dozen or more players were within a shot or two of the lead late Sunday. In the end, it was Rory McIlroy finally breaking through after five straight Top 6 finishes to start the 2019 season. The Florida Swing continues this week with the Valspar Championship and with the PLAYERS Championship last week and the WGC Match Play starting next week, we get a much less appealing field. It does include, however, World #1 Dustin Johnson, #10 Jon Rahm, #12 Jason Day, and defending champion, World #15 Paul Casey. The Innisbrook Resort, Copperhead Course is annually among the hardest courses on Tour. It is a par 71 that stretches 7,340 yards and like last week, there are a ton of obstacles off the tee including tree-lined fairways, doglegs, sand, and yes more water. Once again we will see golfers turn to a "less than driver" strategy off the tee for the most part as positioning and accuracy is much more important than distance this week. This will leave golfers with more long iron approaches so when breaking down Strokes Gained: Approach make sure to concentrate on the 175-200 and 200+ yard ranges. Adding to the number of long iron shots are the Par 3's as there are not only five this week but all of them are 195+ yards. Scoring on the Par 5's will also be important this week as we normally see about 45-50% of all birdies come from these four holes. Survive on the rest, score on the Par 5's! The PLAYERS Championship This week the PGA Tour heads to TPC Sawgrass for the "Fifth Major", The PLAYERS Championship. With the amateurs in the field for the US Open, Club Pros in the field for the PGA Championship and number of former winners who make up the smaller Masters field, one could argue this is the best field in all of golf. This year's 144-player field is made up of every Top 50 player and 81 of the Top 100 players on the Official World Golf Rankings! TPC Sawgrass is a shorter, 7,189-yard Par 72 but the Pete Dye design is no walk in the park. Placement and accuracy off the tee are much more important than distance with the tree-lined fairways with tons of bunkers and water in play as well. Approach shots become very important this week, especially the long irons, as these Bermuda greens are smaller than average and play very fast. The Par 5's are very scoreable and play almost a half stroke under par on average but the Par 4's present a challenge for not only the above mentioned obstacles but also as five of them are over 450 yards in length. The average winning score has been around -12 over the last five to ten years so I will also be weighing both Birdie or Better % and Bogey Avoidance as those who avoid the big numbers here give themselves a big advantage as balls will find the water. Arnold Palmer Invitational This second week of the Florida swing takes the PGA Tour to Bay Hill and Lodge in Orlando for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. While last week's field was on the weaker side with the new Florida schedule, the Arnold Palmer Invitational is always loaded and has three of Top 5, six of the Top 10, and 32 of the Top 50 players in the World. The highlight of the field is Tiger Woods who is making his 18th appearance at Bay Hill, winning it a whopping eight times including a stretch of four in a row from 2000 to 2003. Bay Hill is a 7,419 yard, Par 72 course that plays a bit longer as it is very demanding off the tee. There water in play on close to half the holes and where there is no water, there are very strategically placed bunkers in the key landing areas. This type of challenge will have most of the field using a "less than driver" strategy off the tee on a ton of holes as there is a premium on hitting the fairways. That combined with five of the Par 4's falling between 450 and 500 yards and all four Par 3's sitting at 199+ yards will have the field taking a ton of approach shots from 200+ making it a key area to target when looking at Strokes Gained: Approach. Even with a winning score that consistently reaches the high teens, I will be looking at Bogey Avoidance in my model with all the hazards in play this week and with that low scoring will also be looking at Birdie or Better %. When breaking down Par 4 scoring, I will be looking at the 450 to 500 yard range and will also be weighing Par 5 Scoring with an average of 48% of all birdies coming on those four holes(last...

The Honda Classic After a pit stop in Mexico for the second World Golf Championship fo the season, the PGA Tour will begin the four-event Florida swing in Palm Beach Gardens with The Honda Classic. With the event being moved and sandwiched between the WGC Mexico and Arnold Palmer Invitational the field is not quite as strong overall this time around but is still strong at the top with three of the World's Top 10 players(Justin Thomas #3, Brooks Koepka #4, Rickie Fowler #9) teeing it up this week. The PGA National Champions course is consistently ranked among the Tour's toughest non-major tests and it shows with a winning score that has come in the single digits in five of the last six years. A lot of that higher scoring can be attributed to the wind factor but the good news for this year is that early forecasts are showing wind speeds under 10 mph throughout the event so we could see some lower scoring. That is if the players can avoid the water that is pretty much everywhere at PGA National(in play on 14 of 18 holes). I will be looking heavily at Strokes Gained: Ball Striking this week and with the likelihood we some "less than driver" strategies off the tee I will also be weighted more towards the approach side with long irons being very important with five of the 12 Par 4's over 450 yards. The balance on Bogey Avoidance and Birdie or Better % will be finalized as we see the weather forecast closer to lineup lock but as of now, I am leaning BoB% with the low wind projected. Genesis Open This week the PGA Tour heads to Pacific Palisades, California and Riviera Country Club for the 2019 Genesis Open. It's a course and event that always draws a strong field and the same can be said this time around as six of the Top 10 and 29 of the Top 50 players in the world are teeing it up this week. The course is a Par 71 setup that is on the longer side of things at 7,322 yards. As you can see below in the course breakdown, the biggest test for players are the Par 4's and especially the six of them that are between 450 and 500 yards. The fairways are some of the hardest to hit on tour(54% average courtesy of Future of Fantasy Golfanac) and which gives some advantage to the longer hitters as they will be using smaller clubs on their approach shots creating an easier path to a higher ball flight to hit and stick on these smaller than average, fast greens. Not that shorter hitters can't have success here but they have to be very precise with their long irons. While it is one of the tougher events on Tour, the average winning score over the last five years has been -13(high of -17, low of -6) so Birdie or Better % will also be factored into the equation.
