Normally the PGA Tour would be heading South to Mexico for this World Golf Championship but once again COVID-19 has forced a schedule change. Instead, the Florida swing will start a week ahead of schedule with a newly sponsored WGC event, the Workday Championship. With any WGC event, the field is absolutely loaded with each of the Top 10 and 48 of the Top 50 players in the World teeing it up this week. The host course will be the Jack Nickalus-designed Concession Golf Club which is a par 72 that stretches over 7,400 yards and features Bermuda greens. We don't have much data to point us to how this will play out but just looking at the course overview on the PGA Tour website, it is easy to tell this will be a challenge for the golfers. It is a typical Florida course in that there is a ton of water in play(13 of 18 holes) and it is combined with a whopping 73 bunkers. It doesn't end there as the most unique and challenging part of the course(projecting) appears to be the greens. Overall, they are slightly smaller than average(6,000 sq ft) and very undulated with lots of run-off areas. It is going to take a complete game to contend here so from a fantasy perspective, I will be targeting players who are in form in almost all areas. Be sure to check out my top stats in my model below and then we will get into the picks. Also, remember this is a no-cut event and all players will get four rounds which can lead to a more stars...

A loaded field of 121 players led by World #1 Dustin Johnson will take on one of the toughest tests on the regular PGA rotation. Before getting into the picks, let's take a look at the course, the previous winners, and some of the key stats in my model this week. The Course Riviera Country Club Par 71 - 7,332 Yards Greens - Poa **Click the image above to see a hole by hole breakdown from PGATour.com** Previous Five Winners 2020 - Adam Scott(-11) 2019 - J.B. Holmes(-14) 2018 - Bubba Watson(-12) 2017 - Dustin Johnson(-17) 2016 - Bubba Watson(-15) Top Stats in the Model When breaking down the top stats I use a combination of my own cheatsheet and the tools over at FantasyNational.com. Strokes Gained: Ball Striking The fairways are narrow and the rough is not as penal (average 2" high) and with the course playing longer than listed(six Par 4's over 450 yards) I will be looking at Driving Distance more than anything when breaking down off the tee stats. I won't rule out a player who is shorter off the tee but they will need to check a lot more boxes to make my player pool this week. From a correlation standpoint, SG: Approach was nearly double as important in each of the last two years when the course played inside the Top 10 hardest courses. With Fantasy National, I also look at Opportunities Gained as they correlate very highly. With an average fairway's hit around 50-55% annually here combined with rough that...

Brooks is back and closed out the Waste Management Phoenix Open in style chipping in for an eagle on Hole #17 just shortly after a three-birdie-streak on holes 13, 14, and 15. Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth held the lead going into Sunday but could not capitalize whatsoever which is a mistake when you have Brooks lurking on the leaderboard. If you missed it, check out his round 4 highlights below then we will get into this weeks preview. This week the Tour heads back to California for the AT&T Pebble Beach but this year's event, much like last week, will go ahead without the Pro-Am event. This also means a two-course instead of a three-course rotation with players getting one round on each of Pebble Beach GL and Spyglass Hill GC on Thursday and Friday. The Top 65 & ties who make the cut will then play the final two rounds on Pebble Beach only. With that, my full tourney stats model will be centered around Pebble Beach. With Dustin Johnson pulling out early in the week, we are left with a much weaker field than we have seen in the past with no players inside the Top 10 and only five inside the Top 50 in the World Golf Rankings will tee it up this week. From a stats model perspective, I am heavy on Strokes Gained: Approach and will be keying on Proximity as Pebble Beach has the smallest greens on Tour. This also means I will be weighing Strokes Gained: Around the Green as the GIR rate is lower than Tour average leading...

This week the Tour heads to the desert and TPC Scottsdale for the 2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Since the return of the PGA Tour last summer, there have been few events where I felt things were different with limited or no fans but this week is a big one. A four-time winner of the PGA Tour event of the year, the WMPO annually attracts hundreds of thousands of fans but will have a different feel in 2021 with a limit of 5000-ish fans per day. In comparison, that is about as many as you would see around the tee box at the Par 3, 16th hole(haha). Either way, there is a golf tournament to played and that means we have some analysis and picks to get into. One thing we can be happy about right off the bat is the strong field headlined by five of the World's Top 10 golfers in Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, and the defending champion, Webb Simpson. The course is a par 71 setup that stretches out just over 7,200 yards and is right around Tour average in terms of difficulty ranking inside the Top 20 hardest courses just twice over the last seven years. The fairways are on the difficult side to hit producing a field average around 55% over the last five years. The good news for players is that the rough is not very penal so bombers can have a slight advantage if their short game is on. When it comes to the greens, they are one of the most unique on Tour as...

This week starts with a bit of a rant as I am pretty disappointed in myself for not playing the Pete Dye narrative more last week. Let's break it down using Fantasy National Golf Club and look at Tee to Green rankings(all players on Tour) on Pete Dye courses(L50 rounds) and their finish last week: #2 Si Woo Kim - Won #5 Paul Casey - T8 #8 Patrick Cantlay - 2nd #13 Francesco Molinari - T8 #16 Byeong Hun An - T8 #21 Russell Knox - T16 That is about as far as I will go as the knife just keeps cutting deeper as these are players who were either in my player pool or at least are consistently throughout the season(outside of Molinari). Moving on! This week the Tour stays in Cali and moves to Torrey Pines, right outside of San Diego, for the Farmers Insurance Open. Like last week, players will have a multi-course rotation to deal with as they will play one round on each of the South and North courses on Thursday and Friday. Those players who make the cut will then play out the tournament on the South course on Saturday and Sunday. Speaking of the South course, it will also host the 2021 U.S. Open in June. Headling the field is World #2, Jon Rahm who is back after a Monday WD last week following a supposed injury in the gym. Joining him are two others ranked inside the Top 10(Schauffele, Mcilroy) and 24 of the Worlds Top 50 golfers. Being a Seaside course, the weather is always a huge factor in the winning score so...

As expected, we saw a ton of scoring at the Sony Open in Hawaii last week as Kevin Na took home the trophy with a -21 winning score. This week the PGA Tour heads back to the mainland and La Quinta, California for The American Express. For those who follow golf closely(pretty much anyone reading this), this is the event that kicks off pro-am season and is usually a three-course rotation with a 54-hole cut. With COVID restrictions, there will be no Pro-Am and there will only be two courses(PGA West Stadium & Nicklaus Tournament) used with a normal cut after two rounds. This is the point of the article where you fist pump in glory as no one really likes the Pro-Am, do they?? The field saw am early WD from Jon Rahm and while it is on the weaker side overall, does feature Patrick Cantlay, Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka, and Matthew Wolff, all of which rank inside the Top 15 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Before getting into the picks, let's take a look at the course's, previous winners, and then some key stats from my model.
