If you were tailing my player pool in the article and especially on my sheet last week, you enjoyed the win as much as me and come into this week with some momentum. For the third year in a row, the PGA Tour heads to TPC Twin Cities for the 3M Open and both previous champions in Michael Thompson(2020) and Matthew Wolff(2019) are in the field. The field is headlined by World #2, Dustin Johnson, and #9 Louis Oosthuizen but overall is pretty weak with just eight of the Top 50 teeing it up. The big narrative leading into this event, at least from a fantasy perspective, will be the players returning from the OPEN and as of now, I am undecided on my approach but will address it more in chat as lineup lock approaches. The course is an Arnold Palmer-designed Par 71 built on sand and created to be a links-style course with very few trees. This means the wind will be a factor and I always go more in-depth on the weather on the Wednesday night live show. One thing we do know is that if the wind is down like it was the last two years, the course is very gettable and it has shown with winning scores of -21(Wolff) and -19(Thompson). The other big difference that could really affect scoring this week is the drought which will have the course play faster and firmer than previous years. Overall, when looking at my stats...

Major season will come to an end after this week as the best players in the world head to Royal St. George's Golf Club in Sandwich, England for the 149th OPEN Championship. With the event being canceled in 2020, it feels like ages since Shane Lowry hoisted the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush and I am pretty sure he has taken advantage of the extra year as defending champion. The OPEN Championship returns to Royal St. Georges Golf Club this week for the first time since 2011 when Darren Clarke beat Phil Michelson and Dustin Johnson by three strokes to hoist the hardware. It is a classic Links venue that will be heavily impacted by the wind which is clear when looking at the weekly forecast. On top of the weather, the course can also play very unpredictable due to the undulation throughout. Off the tee, golfers will see slightly wider fairways than in 2011 but won't provide much comfort as the rough/fescue is very tall and challenging and will force plenty of players to simply chip out and try and save par or even bogey. It doesn't get any easier on approach as the greens are undulated and protected by deep and very challenging bunkering that saw just a 34% save rate back in 2011. In my stats model, I am centering everything around Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, both long-term and short-term. Off the tee, I am focusing on Fairways Gained(via FNGC) as the course is not long and missing fairways will most definitely eliminate birdie and even put par in question. On approach, I am looking at from a broad perspective with overall Strokes Gained: Approach and also look at some Fairway Proximity to combine with those who are hitting lots of fairways. Next up, I am predicting around a 55-60% GIR field average...

This week the PGA Tour returns to TPC Deere Run for the John Deere Classic after having to cancel the event in 2020 due to the pandemic. With this being the last event before the Open Championship and final major of the season, we have a very weak field that doesn't include one Top 10 player in the World Golf Rankings and just five who rank inside the Top 50. The biggest thing to train yourself for this week is blocking out the names as they will be overpriced due to season averages. This is key to remove any bias you might have on a player you routinely play in the low $7K range who is now $8K-$9K. Much like last week, we are going to see a birdie fest as this event has ranked outside the Top 35 in difficulty in each of the last five years and seen an average winning score of -22. I will be looking much more at Strokes Gained: Approach over Off the Tee simply because the average fairways hit has been close to 70% over the last five years. Not that I rule it out completely, however, as the Kentuck Bluegrass rough is listed at 4" and can turn hopes of a birdie into a par save at best real fast. With the setup being a Par 71, that means one less Par 5 putting emphasis on Par 4 Scoring and it has shown to have high correlation to finish position. Finally, Birdie or Better % will make up a large portion of my stats model and if using Fantasy National Golf Club tools, I also love looking at Opportunities Gained and Birdie Gained together to see if a player may be under or over performing. With all that said, let's look at some course info, previous winners, and then...

The Course Detroit Golf Club Par 72 - 7,340 Yards Greens - Bent/Poa Previous Winners 2020 - Bryson DeChambeau(-23) 2019 - Nate Lashley(-25) This week the PGA Tour heads back to Detroit Golf Club for a third straight year for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. It is a weaker field overall and top-loaded with Bryson DeChambeau(#6) and Patrick Reed(#9) the only two Top 10 players in the World rankings teeing it up this week. The course is a classic tree-lined Donald Ross design that forces a lot of shot-making with a pretty even split of doglegs to the left and right. While we were mostly guessing at correlated stats over the last two years, we finally have a nice accumulation of stats to look at. The first thing that stands out is Par 4 scoring which has had a very high correlation to finishing position both years(relative to other courses). On top of that, Strokes Gained: Approach had a higher correlation than Off the Tee when looking at Ball Striking. Add in the winning score in the -20's both years and I am leaning heavily on SG: Approach, Par 4 scoring, and Birdie or Better % in my model this week. With that said, let's jump in and look at a few core plays in my player pool this week. Top Tier Targets Bryson DeChambeau World Golf Ranking (#6) Vegas Odds (7.5/1) Draftkings ($11,400) FanDuel ($12,200) I am not thrilled about the top tier outside of Bryson and Patrick Reed so that is where I will be loading up this week. Let's start with Bryson who used a combination of his length(+6.7 strokes off the tee) and a hot putter(+7.8 strokes) to win the event with a winning score of -23. He hasn't posted a Top 10 in almost two months but is more than due considering the...

The Course TPC River Highlands Par 70 - 6,841 Yards Greens - Bent/Poa Previous Five Winners 2020 - Dustin Johnson(-19) 2019 - Chez Reavie(-17) 2018 - Bubba Watson(-17) 2017 - Jordan Spieth(-12) 2016 - Russell Knox(-14) After another incredible Major Championship that went right down to the wire, it was Jon Rahm taking home the hardware for his first Major win. Outside of Tiger who is just on his own level in terms of Torrey Pines, there is not another golfer with closer ties to the venue. Not only did Rahm pick up his first career win here back in 2015, but he also proposed to his wife here and now won a U.S. Open here. Adding to it is the karma surrounding Rahm after holding a six-stroke lead after round 3 at the Memorial but having to WD due to a Covid test. All in all, it was a spectacular week and we now move on and prepare for the upcoming and final major of the season, the OPEN Championship. Before we get ahead of ourselves, the PGA Tour heads to TPC River Highlands for the Travelers Championship this week. Considering the event is following a major, we have a fairly strong field including five of the Top 10(DJ, Bryson, Cantlay, Brooks, Reed) and 24 of the Top 50 players in the world teeing it up this week. This week will most definitely be playing differently than the U.S. Open that played very tough with a winning score of -6 while the Travelers Championship winner has averaged -16 over the last five years. It shows in the stats as TPC River Highlands has seen an average driving accuracy close to 70% and the average GIR rate over 70% when looking at the last five years. When breaking down ball striking, which is always at the top of...

Major championship season continues as the PGA Tour heads to Torrey Pines South for the 121st United States Open Championship. Torrey Pines is one of two regular venues(Pebble Beach GL the other) on the PGA Tour schedule that falls in the U.S. Open rotation so the golfers are quite familiar with it, especially Patrick Reed who won the 2021 event. As it always is, the field is absolutely loaded with each of the Top 50 and 77 of the Top 100 players in the world including defending champion Bryson DeChambeau who took home the hardware at Winged Foot back in September. Don't expect similar scores to what we see annually at the Farmers Insurance Open as the USGA will surely have their special touches on the course. This starts with the rough that is reportedly anywhere between 3-5 inches and targeted to be thicker and more challenging around the greens. Speaking of those greens, they are some of the smallest on Tour and made up of Poa grass which is challenging in itself with all the bumps. To win the U.S. Open, or any major for that matter, it is going to take a complete game to get it done this week but for DFS we can start breaking down the key stats a little more. Off the tee, I am looking for more distance than accuracy but not discounting the accuracy at all with very thick rough. Beaking down SG: approach, I am looking at a combination of rough proximity and long iron proximity distances(175-200 and 200+ yards). With a combination of length, small greens, and thick rough, I am projecting the GIR % to be well below average which means a ton of scrambling so strokes gained: around the green is very high in my model, as well. Finally, I will be looking at golfers...
