Akshay Bhatia
World Golf Ranking (#104)
Vegas Odds (18/1)
DraftKings ($10,000)
FanDuel ($11,800)
The overall field is pretty watered down and that is evident when looking at the top tier. Adam Scott is the most recognizable name and likely gets the most attention but I will be turning to the top-ranked golfer in my model, Akshay Bhatia. He finished T17 here a year ago in his first trip and after a missed cut at the Fortinet this fall season, he has been very solid wiht four straight made cuts including a T21 at the Zozo Championship and T10 last week at the WWT Championship. He is also first in my long-term stats model highlighted by a ranking of 4th in ball striking, 7th in good drive %, 10th in proximity, and 2nd/1st/1st in par 4 scoring, par 5 scoring, and overall bridie or better %. Fire up Bhatia in all formats.
Taylor Pendrith
World Golf Ranking (#123)
Vegas Odds (25/1)
DraftKings ($9,100)
FanDuel ($10,400)
Pendrith is another golfer who kicked off the season with a missed cut at the Fortinet Championship but quickly turned it around. He has only played twice since but has finishes of T3 at the Shriners Open and T15 at the WWT Championship last week. He may be 30th in my long-term model on the sheet but in a smaller sample size(Last 12 rounds), he ranks 4th overall. Look for that form to carry over as he looks to duplicate or top his T5 here back in the 2022 season.
Justin Lower
World Golf Ranking (#198)
Vegas Odds (60/1)
DraftKings ($7,600)
FanDuel ($9,000)
This pick is more for the course history crowd as Lower returns to Port Royal with a T8 last year and T17 in his first trip during the 2022 season. He started the 2023 fall season with a T45 at the Fortinet Championship but went on to miss back-to-back cuts at the Sanderson Farms and Shriners Open. The good news is that he is starting to find that form again as he enters the week coming off a T41 at the Zozo Championship and T23 last week at the WWT Championship. His iron game is his strength which leads to a ton of birdie opportunities. I will be looking for that in a low-scoring tournament this week making him a great fit for GPP builds.
Austin Smotherman
World Golf Ranking (#282)
Vegas Odds (90/1)
DraftKings ($7,200)
FanDuel ($8,600)
Heading down into the value range, the options are pretty thin considering a much weaker field in these fall events. One golfer I am drawn to is Austin Smotherman who barely missed the cut here in 2022 and then returned last year to tally a Top 25. He enters this year's event with some decent form, as well, coming off a T35 at the Shriners Open and T23 last week at the WWT Championship where, despite some lacklustre putting, finished Top 10 in birdies made and completed the event with a round of 64 on Sunday. Look for the momentum to carry over into another potential birdie-fest where, at his price, another Top 25 would be excellent.
