Devonta Freeman FD 8500 DK 7400

He checks all of the running back boxes this week with a high implied total (28.5), big home favorite (-11.5) and projects to see a vast majority of the team’s carries. Freeman been steady (if unspectacular) to start the season though he’s quietly averaging more fantasy points per game (FanDuel scoring) than guys like Le’Veon Bell, Melvin Gordon and Ezekiel Elliott. Yup, I’m as surprised as you. This is thanks, in large part, to Atlanta’s commitment to him in the Red Zone. He’s scored 5 touchdowns (most in the league) while playing one less week than basically every other relevant running back. The Miami D’s been ok against the run this season (2nd in DVOA against the run) but again, this is such a good matchup in every other way. In his four games, Freeman has the best consistency rating among all top 10 RBs (.28 coefficient of variation) and it’s really only his salary giving me pause.

With early news reporting that Rob Kelley will sit out Week 6 we get a chance to pretty confidently target Perine in all formats. He’s exactly what we are looking for in a punt play coming at near minimum salaries across the industry. The Redskins, like the Falcons above, are huge home favorites (-10.5), projected for a ton of points (28) and facing a mediocre 49ers defense. Perine’s been handed the reins before with 40 carries between Weeks 3 and 4 when Kelley was banged up. Perine’s issue is he isn’t very good. He averaged only 2.9 yards per carry in those bell cow weeks against below average run defenses in the Raiders and Rams. The price dictates a play of course, and he should see the goal line work as opposed to pass-catching Chris Thompson. But these can be borderline trap situations because of the possible lack of mid tier talent.

I wrote up Mark Ingram in the main picks article for his price on DraftKings especially in the wake of the team jettisoning the very washed up looking Adrian Peterson. I suspected Ingram would see a majority of the Peterson touches, but the team’s been somewhat committed to involving him in the pass game. He saw 15 targets in Weeks 3 and 4 before the bye and a smattering of carries. I prefer Ingram’s usage floor considering they are coming in around the same prices on both sites, but Kamara has definite PPR viability especially if they plan to split more of the carries with AP gone.

Latavius Murray went into the game against the Bears on Monday night with every opportunity to take over the full starting role in wake of the Dalvin Cook season-ending injury. But instead it was McKinnon who stole the spotlight. The latter carried the ball for a 16/95/1 line and chipped in 6/51 through the air. While the team hasn’t come out with definitive news on the starter going forward, it sure does seem like the job will be McKinnon’s and he could be a popular play this week especially on DraftKings where the price is about as low as you’ll see for a potential starting running back. And on DK I think he’s fine because of his pass-catching ability. But I will throw some caution out there. McKinnon had this role at times last season and more than proved that running between the tackles is a struggle. In his starts last season McKinnon averaged a 16/49 line (good for 3.2 YPC) and wasn’t featured in the red zone. Again, the PPR points really help him on DraftKings, but I’d be hesitant to use him on FanDuel.
