Early Slate

David Paulino FD 7400 DK 6300

To get Carlos Martinez in your lineups on DraftKings along with a few big bats, you are going to have to sacrifice a little with your SP2 today. David Paulino makes an excellent choice for this spot as he comes with a mid $6K price tag on DraftKings and provides us with not only salary relief, but some upside as well. Through four starts he has a 9.2 K/9 rate and although he has struggled a bit giving up 11 earned runs in 19.2 innings, he sits with an impressive 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Today he faces an Oakland team that gets the majority of their runs through the long ball(9th in HR) and as long as Paulino can suppress the power, he should easily get through five innings as the A's rank right near the bottom of the league in overall runs scored. They also strike out just over 25% of the time vs. right-handed pitching giving Paulino some added upside for a very low cost.

Main Slate

On the main slate, if you just can't stomach the price for Luis Severino it is an easy pivot down to Jake Arrieta. He comes at a huge discount on DraftKings and although he isn't the huge favorite Severino is, he has very similar numbers despite different pitch profiles. Both are striking out just under 10 batters per nine innings and for Arrieta that is a career high and he has also dropped his walk rate by a half batter per nine this year. The only knock on Arrieta is the home runs he has been giving up this year(16.4% HR/FB rate) and the 4.64 ERA he carries into tonight. Some of that could be a run of bad luck as he is currently operating with a BABIP of .319 which is 49 points higher than his career high and even his xFIP of 3.76 suggests things will get better in the near future. He is safe in all formats at a price below $10K tonight.
