Kenta Maeda takes a bit of a hit today for the ballpark, the Dodgers are in Chase Field this weekend, but is still worth a look in tournaments for a number of factors. Last year the right hander finished with a .384 wOBA against left handed bats, and a .298 from the right side. This bodes well in his favor against the Diamondbacks Righty heavy lineup. The DBacks, despite playing in one of baseball’s more hitter friendly parks, are batting with a team wOBA of .319 and have only gone long 15 times so far this season, though 9 of those did come at home. They also strike out at a 25.3% K rate which is the third worst rate in the majors and provides a nice upside boost to Maeda, a pitcher that struck out 9.17 batters per 9 last year and is holding at an even 9 per 9 so far this year. The Dodgers are favored to win, though not by much, but if they can get the runs across early and Maeda builds up the Ks he could pay handsomely tonight.

Through three starts so far this season, Dan Straily is sitting with a 1-1 record in his new setting down in south beach. Tonight, he leaves Marlins park behind for the extremely pitcher friendly Petco Park in San Diego, home of the poor hitting Padres. San Diego is hitting with a piddling .287 team wOBA to start this season, and is striking out at an average 22.5% clip. The Marlins aren’t favored to win by much either, in fact, only one pitcher is looking like a solid option for a win tonight, we’ll get to him in a moment. Regardless of the win factor, the spacious park and poor offense provides us with plenty of potential upside for Straily making him an appealing tournament option on the main slate.

Tyler Skaggs is off to a so-so start this year, the Angels haven’t performed as well as we might expect a team of their caliber to, and Skaggs has yet to collect a win in three starts sitting at 0-1 as the Angels play host to the Blue Jays. Speaking of struggles, the Blue Jays troubles at the plate have been well documented as this first month of the season draws to a close. They’ve got a .269 wOBA which is the worst in the American league, and their 24.6 K% is the fourth worst in baseball. Skaggs, while not the most appealing name going today, is the only pitcher aside of Carlos Carrasco, with a projected win almost guaranteed. He’s striking out 9.87 per nine, though his control seems to be somewhat iffy at times and he’s also allowing 4.17 BB/9. Last year he had little trouble keeping the ball in play, issuing an impressive .91 HR/9 and playing in Anaheim certainly helps in that respect.
