I said last night this was looking like one of my favorite stacks of the day, and the more I think about it, the more it is. Baltimore is hosting the Red Sox this weekend in Camden Yards, and tonight they step in to the batters box against Steven Wright. Wright had a solid 2016 finishing with a combined .287n wOBA and 7.3 K/9. This year through three starts however he has been struggling mightily, including getting rocked by the Orioles last week in Fenway. In that game he lasted 1.1 inning allowing 8 runs on 8 hits, and surrendering home runs to Chris Davis and Adam Jones. Pairing those two with Manny Machado, and Mark Trumbo could be an excellent way to go tonight. Those four combined for a .346 wOBA last year and 151 of the Orioles collective 253 home runs. The weather may be a factor here tonight, so keep an eye on the forecast as we draw closer to game time, current forecast is drizzle with a light wind blowing across from left to right.
Next up, we have one of my favorite tournament stacks from last season, and that’s not just because I consider Citizens Bank Park to be my summer home. The Phillies lineup is designed for GPPs, they’re about as “boom or bust” from 1-8 as you’ll find anywhere in the majors. Just look at what they did to Jeremy Guthrie a couple of weeks ago. Granted, those games are few and far between, and I’m not implying the Phitins’ are going to put 12 on the board against Jaime Garcia, but that’s what provides the separation we want in a big tournament. Philadelphia, for what it’s worth is actually projected for 4.2 runs tonight, and Garcia is off to a shaky start to the season going 0-1 in three starts allowing 2.08 HR/9 and only striking out 4.15 batters per 9. This bodes well for swing first Philadelphia. Garcia finished last season with a .301 wOBA against left handed bats (.342 versus right), which elevated to .368 on the road (.354 against right). The Phillies will come at him from both sides of the plate with the like of Cesar Hernandez, Daniel Nava, Odubel Herrera, Maikel Franco, Tommy Joseph, and Cameron Rupp. Rupp is also a good choice for a cheap priced tournament catcher if you’re stacking a pricier team (Hello Coors!) and want to save up behind the dish. There’s light rain in the forecast here as well with a light wind blowing across so be sure to check the forecast closer to start, but if we’re clear to play ball, I love the potential the Phillies bring at a very affordable cost.
Lastly we come to the gimme pick. Coors Field. Brent highlighted the Giants last night against Tyler Chatwood and if you took his advice it should have paid off as they Giants starters combined for 90.3 total FanDuel points last night. Tonight they step in to the box against Antonio Senzatela, who we unfortunately do not have a lot to go on with. In three big league starts this season, he’s striking out 6.63 batters per nine, which doesn’t much affect San Fran who don’t whiff often. However that’s the appeal of the Giants bats in Coors field, there’s not much power, but there’s plenty of contact. Even with all of last night’s fantasy performance, Brandon Belt is the only one to leave the yard. Along with Belt, you can lock in Denard Span, Hunter Pence, Buster Posey and Brandon Crawford The wind blowing out to left tonight could provide a boost to Posey who’s a 37% pull hitter and Crawford who hits to the opposite field a third of the time. If they can get under one they may be able to get it out.
Also, Let’s not forget the team that calls Coors home. I like prefer the Giants tonight, but the Rockies are projected for slightly more runs. They’re going up against Matt Moore who has lost some of his velocity, but is still a rather good pitcher, but this is Coors Field, meaning Charlie Blackmon, DJ LeMahieu, Nolan Arenado, CarGo, and Trevor Story, who I spotlighted in last night’s picks article are all in consideration as well.
