Gio Gonzalez is riding an impressive spring in to an impressive start to the season. The southpaw has a 1-0 record through two starts and has a 1.33 WHIP with 13 Ks and only two walks. While it's still early going, he looks to be well on the path to best his 2016 season where he went 11-11 in 32 starts, striking out nearly a batter per inning and allowing a mere 0.96 hr/9. Today he will take the hill against NL East rivals the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are not much different from the mediocre offense Gio saw several times last year, a team with a 23.1 k% which was fourth worst in the league, and homered 161 times. The one difference would be the departure of Ryan Howard, taking 15% of those home runs with him. Look for Gio to go deep into this one, while picking up at the very least 7 K's with 10+ not being entirely out of the question.

On the other side of that match up we have Jerad Eickhoff. The Hoff is actually looking pretty sharp through his first two starts, though the Phillies general lack of offensive support has kept him out of the win column. He opened the season in Cincinnati suffering a loss despite allowing only 2 runs in 6.2 innings, and receeived a no decision after seven innings of one run ball against the Mets. He'll face an uphill battle trying for a win against the high powered Nationals offense with the likes of Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy. For all their power however, the Nats still struck out at a 20.2% rate last season and we're going to need for him to hone in and fan some Nat bats today since the win will be hard to come by. If you're looking for a cheap arm with definite upside potential then give some consideration to Jerad Eickhoff.

Finally, we'll give a look to Bartolo Colon. After starting the season off with an impressive performance against his former Mets teammates, Bartolo was lit up by the Marlins for 6 runs off of 7 hits and 2 walks in only 4 innings pitched. Colon is the definition of a boom of bust play, but the boom could be there today, and could be quite a big one as he goes up against the Padres. San Diego is just a pitiful offense, they had the second worst strikeout percentage in the majors in 2016 at 24.8, which could provide a boost to Colon who sported only a 6.01 k/9 last year with the Mets. Although it's close, the Braves are favored to win this one, ad the win bonus added with the Padres penchant for swinging and missing could add up to fantasy value as long as Colon can limit the base runners, while garnering run support from his offense.
