Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks for FanDuel and DraftKings 1/31/17

The All-Star break is over and we are back with another night of daily fantasy hockey. Tuesday brings us a huge 14 game slate with all but two teams in action. Let's dig in and take a look at some of the top values from the projection system.

Hockey is back and with it come our NHL projections which help inform these picks every night. When you purchase a DFSR NHL subscription to our base hockey projections you also get access to our brand new NFL DFS suite of tools including full projections, optimal NFL lineups and our Player Lab, which includes filters to help you create NFL lineups for FanDuel and DraftKings for any format. It’s a set of tools well beyond anything we’ve ever had, and something we feel will help our users *ahem* tackle the NFL season.

GOALIES

John Gibson FD - $9300 DK - $8400
Opponent - COL
Proj Pts FD - 19.34 DK - 4.83

The goalie position is a bit tricky today with some top end guys taking a post All-Star day off(Holtby) and some other top choices in difficult matchups against each other(Bobrovsky vs. Lundqvist). The first tender to stand to stand out when looking things over is the Ducks John Gibson who gets an elite matchup. Without even a confirmation in net, the Ducks open as huge -265 favorites to the bottom feeding Avalanche and their 30th offense and defense. Gibson was very solid leading up to the break with a 6-2-1 record, .945 save % and two shutouts in his last 10 games played. Lock him in all formats tonight!

Also Consider: Carey Price (GPP)

CENTERS

Auston Matthews FD - $7900 DK - $7600
Opponent - DAL
Proj Pts FD - 15.28 DK - 4.63

A very impressive first half to his rookie season earned him a spot on Atlantic Division All-Star team. He also took part in the skills competition and showed his deadly accuracy, beating everyone but Sidney Crosby in the target competition. He then followed it up with a goal in the three on three competition on Sunday. From a DFS perspective, he is an elite play at the center position as he comes at a slight discount from the top guys and is very safe with shot volume ranking 10th overall in shot attempts per 60 minutes(20.3).

Stack with: Connor Brown, William Nylander(PP)

Jeff Carter FD - $7900 DK - $7100
Opponent - ARI
Proj Pts FD - 14.72 DK - 4.82

Another option at the center position that falls just below the top tier guys on both sites. He also represented his division(Pacific) in the All-Star game and impressed with four points in two games. Much like Matthews, he has elite shot volume(19th in shot att/60) for a center making him safe in cash games and he also comes with multi-point upside which is perfect for GPP's, especially in a matchup vs. the 27th ranked defense in the Coyotes.

Stack with: Tanner Pearson

Vincent Trocheck FD - $7100 DK - $6300
Opponent - OTT
Proj Pts FD - 16.1 DK - 5.01

As you can see, I am very high on the upper mid-range options at center tonight. There isn't usually a ton of options you can trust in cash games as shot volume isn't a common trait of a centermen. Trocheck isn't quite at the level of the above options but he still fires 14 shots attempts per 60 minutes(well above avg) which has resulted in an average of about three shots on goal per game. He was also red hot entering te All-Star break with points in 12 of his previous 15 games with six multi-point erforts.

Stack with: Reilly Smith, Jussi Jokinen

WINGERS

Vladimir Tarasenko FD - $8100 DK - $7000
Opponent - WPG
Proj Pts FD - 12.16 DK - 4.33

First of all, I won't be using Tarasenko in cash games due to the lack of shot volume over the last few weeks heading into the All-Star break. As for GPP's, I think he makes an excellent high upside play that will most likely be overlooked tonight with so many other high-end plays at all positions. The reason I am not overly worried about the low shot volume is that despite the mini-slump, Tarsenko still ranks 5th overall in shot attempts per 60 minutes and has 21 goals and 26 assists on the season .

Stack with: Jori Lehtera, Jaden Schwartz

Jeff Skinner FD - $6800 DK - $6400
Opponent - PHI
Proj Pts FD - 12.36 DK - 3.94

If it's shot volume and cash game safety you are looking for stop here. Skinner has provided said safety all season with elite shot volume, averaging 3.6 shot on goal per game while skating just over 17 minutes per game on the Canes top line. The offense has been inconsistent all year, ranking 19th,  but will get a boost tonight at home vs. the Flyers and their 18th ranked defense.

Stack with: Victor Rask, Derek Ryan

Kyle Palmieri FD - $6000 DK - $4400
Opponent - DET
Proj Pts FD - 11.93 DK - 3.91

His price is a little hefty on FanDuel but if you are looking for a low-end filler with upside on DraftKings, Palmieri is terrific choice tonight. The mid $4K tag is just too cheap for a guy with above average shot volume(15.4 shot att/60) who has seen an uptick in shots on goal lately(25 in last 10 games). The Devils are on the road tonight to face the struggling Red Wings and Palmieri has been better away from Jersey with 20 points in 27 games.

Stack with: Taylor Hall, Travis Zajac

DEFENSEMEN
Dustin Byfuglien FD - $6500 DK - $5800
Opponent - STL
Proj Pts FD - 12.54 DK - 3.99

With a number of high-end forwards I want to fit in my lineups tonight, I find myself dipping below the elite tier. The first guy that stands out is Big Buff who, at least to me, seems very under priced for what he offers fantasy-wise. He has tallied 32 points through 52 games this season including three multi-point efforts in his last five games before the break. He also provides a very high floor with elite shot volume and above average shot blocking.

Ivan Provorov FD - $4900 DK - $4600
Opponent - CAR
Proj Pts FD - 10.12 DK - 3

Can't kick off the second half of the NHL season without mentioning my boy Ivan Provorov. The rookie D man has quickly picked up the pro game and is an up and coming star. The offensive stats(22 points) don't tell the whole story as he has been working endlessly on becoming a better all-around defensemen. He has done this and provides excellent value under$5K on both sites while providing a consistent floor with shots and blocks.
