Daily Fantasy Hockey Picks for FanDuel and DraftKings 1/23/17

Welcome back for another night of daily fantasy hockey with DFSR. Monday brings us six games including three of theTop 10 offenses. Just one team is on a back to back(NYR) with just one playing a third game in four nights(CAR). Let's get started!

Braden Holtby FD - $9600 DK - $8200
Opponent - CAR
Proj Pts FD - 19.19 DK - 4.8

The Capitals are playing some of their best hockey right since the Christmas break winning nine of 11 games and have yet to lose in regulation. The should be able to keep that trend alive tonight in a home matchup vs. the Hurricanes who are playing a third game in four nights. The Caps open as big -200 favorites and should have their #1 goalie between the pipes tonight. Holtby bounced back after being pulled in an end to end 80's style shootout vs. the Pens last week and has now 7-0-1 in his last 10 starts with a .935 save % and three shutouts. Roll him out in all formats tonight.

CENTERS

Nicklas Backstrom FD - $6900 DK - $6800
Opponent - CAR
Proj Pts FD - 14.14 DK - 4.36

Backstrom has been on an absolute tear lately as the Caps have scored a whopping 50goals in their last 10 games played. What's been more impressive is that the have done this against teams like Columbus, Pittsburg x2, Chicago, St. Louis and Montreal. Individually, Backstrom has 16 points himself in those last 10 games and although he is normally not considered for cash games due to low shot volume, he ca't be faded in any format right now.

Stack with: Alex Ovechkin, T.J. Oshie

 

 
Vincent Trocheck FD - $6800 DK - $6100
Opponent - ARI
Proj Pts FD - 13.59 DK - 4.32

Trocheck hasn't been quite on the same level as Backstrom lately but he is still been very good. The young Panthers center has produced 11 points in his last 10 games including six goals and two powerplay points. From a safety perspective, he is also a better choice as he is averaging just under three shots on goal per game this season.

Stack with: Jussi Jokinen, Reilly Smith

 

 
Tyler Bozak FD - $5700 DK - $5000
Opponent - CGY
Proj Pts FD - 11.48 DK - 3.53

If you are looking to go even cheaper at Center tonight, take a shot with Bozak who centers a line of JVR and the other outstanding rookie Mitch Marner. Bozak has been red hot with goals in five of his last seven games and 11 points in his last 10 games. The biggest upside over those games has come on the powerplay where he has recorded seven of those 11 points. There should be plenty of powerplay opportunities tonight as the Flames lead the league in penalty minutes per game while the Leafs are not far behind in sixth.

WINGERS

Joe Pavelski FD - $8000 DK - $7400
Opponent - COL
Proj Pts FD - 14.15 DK - 4.67

Pavelski hasn't ben at his best lately, hence the lower PTS/$ projection today. While I won't be using him in cash games, there is a ton of merit in using him in GPP's as he comes with giant upside in one of the best matchups of the day. The Sharks have won four straight games and now go on the road to Colorado to face an Avs team that ranks dead last in offense, defense and sit in the basement of the entire league. Fire up the Sharks stack tonight.

Corey Perry FD - $6700 DK - $6200
Opponent - WPG
Proj Pts FD - 12.1 DK - 4.19

Perry is another underperforming star(five points last 10 games) on the road in a nice spot tonight. He broke out of his three-game slump with a goal last game vs. the Wild and has taken four shots on goal in each of the last two games. His best value is on DraftKings tonight where his price has dropped into the low $6K range. Even with an average of just 2.8 shots per game, he is safe in all formats tonight.

Radim Vrbata FD - $5400 DK - $5100
Opponent - FLA
Proj Pts FD - 12.03 DK - 3.77

I normally hate recommending Coyotes players but tonight it makes perfect sense. Although the Panthers rank 13th in defense this season, they are currently struggling having lost three straight giving up 11 goals combined. Vrbata presents a safe option at the position at a lower mid range price. He is coming off a monster four-point game against the Bolts and has fired four or more shots on net in five straight games.

Stack with: Tobias Rieder, Martin Hanzal

 

 

 

DEFENSEMEN

*Note - Brent Burns is 100% in play in a great matchup vs. the Avs if you can fit him into your lineups*

 
Oliver Ekman-Larsson FD - $5700 DK - $4700
Opponent - FLA
Proj Pts FD - 10.31 DK - 3.71

If you can afford Burns he makes an excellent multi-point upside play against the Avs but with lack of value it will be tough tonight. I will be turning to the mid-range and, yes, rostering another Coyotes player. I mentioned the Panthers struggles above and why it makes the Coyotes a nice target tonight. Ekman-Larsson hasn't been outstanding this year but has 25 points in 46 games and provides a nice balance of shot blocking and shot volume and plays around 25 minutes of ice time per game.

 

 
Marc-Edouard Vlasic FD - $4700 DK - $4000
Opponent - COL
Proj Pts FD - 9.83 DK - 3.03

While I most likely won't be able to afford Burns, I still want a piece of the Sharks defense. Vlasic comes in just under $5K on FanDuel and $4K on DraftKings making him a near must paly in all formats tonight. He has recorded five points in his last 10 games with a nice balance of 26 blocks and 15 shots on goal for an average of 3.1 DK/10.6 FD points.
