Stacking in DFS MLB is such an important concept if you’re looking to take down a big tournament on FanDuel or DraftKings. It’s also a good way to diversify cash games because the variance in baseball can mean wild swings (ahem) in the scoring on a particular slate. The concept is easy. You want to pile players from one or two teams into your lineups because those guys compound scores by helping each other score runs when the going is good.

Stack Targets

Baltimore Orioles against James Shields
Park - US Cellular Field

Let's start with the easy one. The Orioles have put up the 2nd best wOBA against right handers in the majors this season, which is sort of astounding given the number of right handed bats they trot out there. But as we've written many times, they've got as many reverse platoon guys as I've ever seen. Jones, Machado, and Schoop also qualify there - and that says nothing of straight platoon monsters like Chris Davis. Heck, even guys like Steve Pearce and Mark Trumbo are solid high upside plays. Basically you're just looking to get some pile of guys batting next to one another, here.

As for James Shields, yeesh. Things were already heading in the wrong direction for him going into this year, and his 5.07 xFIP is among the 5 worst in the league. His Ks are way down, his walks are up, and he's lived up to last year's absurd home-runs allowed numbers. Throw in a great hitter's park, and things are really looking up. This one might be a little chalky, but I'm all over it either way.

The Coors Game
It's rather obvious, but on a day where the 2nd highest total is 9.5, and the next highest after that is 8.5, an 11 total is something to behold. Yes, we've seen higher totals in Coors. And yes, neither of these pitchers is a crime against humanity, but...

A few quick words on Adam Conley. His 3.41 ERA is a result of some serious run-hot this season. His 4.71 xFIP paints a clearer picture of a guy who really struggles with his control (hi 3.93 BB/9), and his 37.8% ground ball rate leaves him very vulnerable to big innings. He happens to pitch in humid Miami, where that doesn't hurt him as often. But in Coors? Gulp.

The Brewers-Diamondbacks Game
I know it's a little weird to take these as whole games rather than as individual teams, but this is a pretty unique situation. We have another 9.5 total, but this one has neither team favored to get a win (they're both at -105). Looking up their respective wOBAs against right handed pitching... they're at .308 and .309, respectively. So, pick a team, I guess?

Let's go into the pitchers themselves.

Archie Bradley is a young pitcher with promise, but the 4.54 walks per nine are just a travesty. He's a short start and an explosive inning waiting to happen.

As for Jimmy Nelson, he's kind of a worse version of Archie Bradley! His 4.16 walks are awful, but his strike-out rate is even worse. If I had to pick a team to stack here personally, I'd probably go with the D-Backs.
