Pitching Targets
The big tourney plays
Opponent - STL (Garcia) Park - @SEA
FD - 29.73 DK - 15.53
The Cardinals have been a strong offensive squad this season, but have actually put up the 4th worst wOBA in the league against LHP.
Paxton himself is a prospect with grade A pedigree who hasn't quite put it together at the major league level yet. He's put up ridiculous K numbers across AAA and the majors in a short sample this season, averaging better than 10 K/9 and generating ground-balls on 51.1% of the balls in play he does allow. That's a recipe for the occasional big start, as evidenced by his back to back great starts against Cleveland and Texas earlier this season. Might he get blown up? Sure. It's arguably likely. But don't be shocked if you see his name atop tourney leaderboards alongside the fantastic big money plays you can grab today.
Opponent - SF (Cueto) Park - @SF
FD - 32.4 DK - 18.33
If you want one that's really off board, here you go. Nola's got a phenomenal 2.92 xFIP this season, which is good for the 5th best in the majors. He's striking out 9.75 batters per 9 innings, good for 14th in the majors. If we're being honest with each other - and we should be honest with each other if this is going to be a long term thing - I'm not sure that Aaron Nola is really the budding ace he seems to be. The minor league track record sort of isn't there. But here's a little DFS lesson for you!
You don't need guys with A+ true talent to win a big tournament. You don't need guys with good match-ups, either. You just need guys who are capable of big numbers (check). That's really it. The Giants will probably beat the Phillies today, yes. But they might not. And if they don't, it will likely be because Nola is awesome. There are so many great pitchers going today that it's hard to fathom Nola being the best among them (especially against a SF team that doesn't strike out much), but you can probably get him and the most expensive bats at a less than %1 start. And that just might be a winning recipe.
Note: We discussed the chalk cash game plays in the main picks article today - Kershaw, Fernandez, and Cueto. This article is about some guys the rest of the field might not see coming.
So yeah, baseball season! And we've got some goodies you can take with you. At the end of the post, we have our MLB eBook that you really ought to check out before setting even a single daily fantasy MLB lineup. It's free, below.

Thoughts on fister today?
paxton isnt a righty
I like Fister today! He has been pitching well. He will be in a couple of my lineups.
Umm.. He is a lefty Joe.
Not liking the COL or TOR stacks as much as usual. Both team's pitchers have been quite solid this year so far. Also, most of the hitters will be playing on extra short rest since last night's game went so late and is being followed up by an early day game today. Not saying some runs won't be scored, but I'm picking today to fade. Anyone else sensing this too?
Oops, I just posted to the wrong article lol
