Stacking in DFS MLB is such an important concept if you’re looking to take down a big tournament on FanDuel or DraftKings. It’s also a good way to diversify cash games because the variance in baseball can mean wild swings (ahem) in the scoring on a particular slate. The concept is easy. You want to pile players from one or two teams into your lineups because those guys compound scores by helping each other score runs when the going is good.
San Diego Padres vs. John Lamb (Reds)
Park - Great American Ballpark
While the Padres are going to very rarely touch this article, this match up is a big exception. They will be taking on a southpaw in John Lamb, who is one of the worst pitchers in the league. Thus far into 2016, Lamb has exhibited a .355 wOBA to righties and a .341 wOBA against left handers. While you may think his peripherals suggest some improvement, a 6.27 xFIP suggests the absolute opposite. And yes, the Padres are a very horrible team. However, they are not as bad as you may think against southpaws. They are surprisingly the 6th best team in the league against lefties with a .341 wOBA, a .795 OPS and a very high 34.3% hard contact rate. To add on to all of these favorable factors, they will be moving from Petco Park to the extremely hitter friendly Great American Ballpark. If I were to pick my favorite Padres in order, I would go with Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, Yangervis Solarte, Melvin Upton and Derek Norris. Another thing to look at here is the projected ownership. With a game being in Coors Field, every other stack will be much lower owned than it should be. While I prefer the Rockies if the ownership was even, that is not the case. Make sure you get some exposure to this high upside team stack.
Boston Red Sox vs. James Shields (White Sox)
Park - Fenway Park
If you want to look at one of the more obvious stacks of the day, you have the Boston Red Sox. The Bo Sox will be taking on James Shields, yes, the same guy who has given up 31 earned runs in his last 3 starts. I would be very surprised if the White Sox don't shut the 34 year old down for a bit if he comes out and struggled again. There is a very good chance there is some structural damage to Shields and until he shows his old dominance, I will continue to target him. The Boston Red Sox have been the best offense in the league against right handers with a .355 wOBA and a very nice 119 wRC+. The top 5 Red Sox bats in my book are going to be David Ortiz, Mookie Betts, Hanley Ramirez, Dustin Pedroia and Jackie Bradley jr., in that order. With this game being played at Fenway Park, the Sox are going to have a great shot at producing a ton of runs.
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Eddie Butler (Rockies)
Park - Coors Field
Now on to the most obvious stack of them all, the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-Backs are taking on a right hander in Eddie Butler, a guy who has given up a .391 wOBA to both left handers and right handers, however, he has been a lot worse at home in Coors Field, obviously. The Diamondbacks are coming off of a tough series against the Blue Jays and they will look to bounce back against Eddie Butler in the hitter friendly Coors Field. The Diamondbacks are a team with a ton of upside as they have a great combo of speed and power. My top 5 hitters are going to be Paul Goldschmidt, Jean Segura, Welington Castillo, Peter O'Brien and David Peralta. While this stack is going to be very highly owned, it just might pay off. I would look to play the highly owned stack with some other low owned players, which will give you the separation you need in tournaments. While I think I prefer the other two due to the ownership and similar upside, the Diamondbacks are in a terrific spot.
