Stacking in DFS MLB is such an important concept if you’re looking to take down a big tournament on FanDuel or DraftKings. It’s also a good way to diversify cash games because the variance in baseball can mean wild swings (ahem) in the scoring on a particular slate. The concept is easy. You want to pile players from one or two teams into your lineups because those guys compound scores by helping each other score runs when the going is good.

Stack Targets

Diamondbacks vs. Adam Morgan (Phillies)
Park - Citizens Bank Park

Anytime the D Backs are going up against a southpaw you better consider stacking them. They absolutely crush left handed pitching, ranking 3rd in team wOBA(.348), 3rd in ISO(194) and 4th in wRC+(114). They get a juicy matchup vs. the Phillies and Adam Morgan on Friday. Morgan has really struggled since mid May making six starts and giving up 27 earned runs on 32.1 innings while surrendering eight home runs. The 7.52 ERA is higher than it will level off to but not by much as the xFIP is sitting at 5.20 in that timeframe. He has struggled vs. both righties(.361 wOBA) and lefties(.369 wOBA) but has given up seven of his nine home runs to batters from the right side of the plate. The top right handed hitters to stack on D Backs are Paul Goldschmidt, Brandon Drury, Jean Segura, Yasmany Tomas, Rickie Weeks and even Michael Bourn if he hits in the leadoff spot or two hole.

Houston Astros vs. John Lamb (Reds)
Park - Minute Maid Park

As you probably guessed by reading the main article today, the Astros are a favorite of the projection system for Friday. They have the highest projected team total(5.72) of anyone on the slate due to the terrific matchup. Like the D Backs, the Astros will face a weak left handed pitcher who has been struggling this season. John Lamb has made eight starts this season with four being very economical allowing just one earned run in each. The issue has been the other four starts where he has allowed 20 earned runs combined in those starts while allowing six home runs. He has also issues with control and is currently sitting with a 3.64  BB/9 rate. The Astros are the second worst team in K rate(24.7%) vs. left handed pitching but that could be a bit neutralized today as Lamb is striking out less than five batters per nine innings. The Astros have a great combination of speed and power with guys like George Springer, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa at the top of the order followed by Evan Gattis with big power upside to drive in the runs.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Mike Wright (Orioles)
Park - Camden Yards
Speaking of pitchers who get tagged on the regular, I give you Mike Wright. Wright’s rocking a high 4’s xFIP along with a 3.39 BB/9 that isn’t countered by any kind of strikeout ability. That’s bad news against a team like the Blue Jays who can give you major problems especially at the top of the lineups. Yes Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion are significantly better against righties. But the team run line is one of the highest on the slate and the Jays’ prices are trending on the lower side. If Michael Saunders can get a look around of the middle of the lineup then he makes an excellent play as well.

    • One night. Shouldn't make long term judgments on a one-off. Optimal lineups crushed last night fwiw even with Ortiz, JBJ, etc

      • I'm wondering if I might be using the optimizer incorrectly. You said it crushed last night. However the one optimal lineup I ran on DK only scored 121.55.

        • Top system lineup on DK that I employed (and I'm nearly certain it didn't change) was:
          Kazmir
          Happ
          Wieters
          Ortiz
          Walker
          Machado
          Alcides
          Harper
          Betts
          Bautista
