Stacking in DFS MLB is such an important concept if you’re looking to take down a big tournament on FanDuel or DraftKings. It’s also a good way to diversify cash games because the variance in baseball can mean wild swings (ahem) in the scoring on a particular slate. The concept is easy. You want to pile players from one or two teams into your lineups because those guys compound scores by helping each other score runs when the going is good.

Stack Targets

Detroit Tigers vs. C.C. Sabathia (Yankees)
Park - Yankee Stadium
The Tigers come into a weekend series with the Yankees and should be in a nice spot to put up some runs on Friday. While C.C. Sabathia sports a 2.58 ERA the 4.57 xFIP tells a much different story. Sabathia is walking more than 3.5 batters per nine and has lived off a .281 BABIP against and 3.7 Hr/FB ratio which just simply can’t stick. The Tigers run righties all the way down the lineup and could give Sabathia a ton of trouble here. Really about everyone is in play here with Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Ian Kinsler and J.D. Martinez leading the charge. All four of those guys own better career splits against lefties and though Yankee Stadium plays better for lefty power, it does give a better than average boost to left field as well.

Arizona Diamondback vs. Justin Nicolino (Marlins)
Park - Chase Field
It isn’t often you get a Major League pitcher (who’s handed the ball every five days) with peripherals as bad as Justin Nicolino. Dude k’s around 3.5 per nine and walks 2.5. These numbers are simply horrible and would be mitigated some if he were say an extreme groundball guy. But he’s not and he stinks. The D-Backs should have one of the highest expected run totals on the day considering their lineup, park and opponent. Paul Goldschmidt is a top tier play today considering his dismantling of lefties. Over the last two seasons he has a 1K OPS in this split with a .438 wOBA. Other Diamondbacks in play today are Welington Castillo, Jean Segura and Yasmany Tomas.

Colorado Rockies vs. Andrew Cashner (Padres)
Park - Coors Field

This one is pretty obvious but I will list it anyway. The Rockies returned home yesterday and after scoring four runs or less in six of their last eight games, exploded against the Pirates for 11 runs. They will get a great matchup at home once again vs. Andrew Cashner who has been awful with a high xFIP(4.89), low K rate(5.98 K/9) and extremely high walk rate(3.76 BB/9). While I could see targeting almost every bat in the Rockies lineup I will be keying in on the righties as Cashner has given up a .405 wOBA to right handed batters as compared to a .297 wOBA vs. left handed batters. Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story(Awesome value on FanDuel) top the list but like I said you can't go wrong with any combination.

  • how much does BvP go into your recommendations? Victor is 6-32 lifetime against CC.

    • 0 BVP goes into projections. Sample size always statistically insignificant. Though I do understand why some like to refer to it.

    • They didn't show up as high in the system as I thought they would. Though the run line's ticked up a bit overnight so things might change some when I push through updated projections later on this AM

  • What are your thoughts on the Pirates tonight? Wacha is struggling with just about everything right now.

  • @Murph302

I absolutely love using FanGraphs. Takes some time to learn to navigate but has almost anything imaginable.

  • @Craig

Pirates have also struggled recently scoring 5 or more runs only 4 times in last 13 games but have done it in back to back losses to Rockies and Mets. Like you said though, great matchup vs. Wacha who has given up 27 earned runs for an awful 8.38 ERA over his last six starts with a walk rate over 4.

  • Is the optimal lineup better for GPP or cash? Should it be tweaked based upon the contest type?
