Pitching Targets

Note: We discussed Kyle Hendricks and Zack Greinke in the Main Article. And will be going over a few more options below.

Michael Pineda FD 7500 DK 6000
Opponent - LAA (Tropeano) Park - @NYY
FD - 28.18 DK - 14.15

Tonight is one of those nights where you will find a lot of great stacking options, but not many pitching options. I will be targeting a couple of tournament pitchers in this article that I will have some exposure to on this slate (I won't have all my marbles in one basket tonight like I did with Jon Lester last night).

My first tournament play of the day belongs to Michael Pineda (limit your exposure please). Pineda has a 6.41 ERA and that will scare many people away from him. Can you blame people for doing that? I know I can't. The good news is that he's much better than his ERA suggests as he owns a 3.45 xFIP. Believe it or not, Pineda also has some upside of his own. He is coming into this contest sporting a 24.7 K% and 5.5 BB%. He is fanning hitters at a high rate and is also limiting the walks. His peripherals look good and I love his price tag around the industry. A matchup against the Angels does not give Pineda a ton of upside (15.6 K%), but you can't complain -- he's very cheap! He is a tournament only play for me, as pitching at Yankees Park isn't ideal for any pitcher, and Pineda has been inconsistent this season.

Joe Ross FD 8400 DK 9700
Opponent - CHW (Latos) Park - @CHW
FD - 28.81 DK - 18.93

The second guy on the list is Joe Ross. The projection system is all over him today, so I will go ahead and throw him into some lineups.

Joe Ross will be going up against the White Sox today, who have cooled off quite a bit ever since that hot start in April. They are coming into this contest sporting a .298 wOBA (27th in MLB) against right-handed pitchers. Wow, this number has gone down tremendously. I remember they were in the top 12 at the beginning of the year. This shows you how much they've struggled as of late, so you can see why the projection system loves him in this contest. The White Sox also own a .135 ISO (27th in MLB) and 84 wRC+ (27th in MLB). They don't hit for much power (outside of Todd Fraizer) and have had trouble creating scoring opportunities.

Joe Ross on the other hand, has been solid this season. He is coming into this contest sporting a 2.37 ERA that is backed up by a 3.46 FIP. Some regression will eventually happen, but I don't see that being the case tonight. He has looked phenomenal in his last two starts, as he went 7 innings in both contest and only allowed 1 ER. He doesn't have that K upside you look for (18.8 K%), but he has a sweet matchup tonight, so go ahead and use him in all formats.

Mike Leake FD 7000 DK 7000
Opponent - CIN (Lamb) Park - @CIN
FD - 28.72 DK - 18.75

Narrative street: If you're a sucker for "revenge games," then Mike Leake is your guy. He will be going up against his former team on the road.

If you're like me, you aren't really paying much attention to that and are looking for pitchers that have upside and a nice matchup (not many on today's slate). There are three reasons why I am going the Mike Leake route: 1. I love the matchup against the Reds. 2. Our projection system loves him. 3. There are not many options on today's slate. See where I'm going with this?

On the year, the Reds have been either really good offensively or really bad (more bad than good). They own a 22.8 K% (9th in MLB) against right-handed pitching. While Leake isn't a guy that possesses a ton of upside (14.8 K%) a nice matchup against a strikeout heavy-offense will certainly help him out. The Reds also own a .303 wOBA (23rd in MLB) and 85 wRC+ (26th in MLB). Look for Leake to deliver a quality start tonight and possibly pick up the win.

  • What do you think about deGrom against PIT....I'm not huge fan of his match up, but he has some good upside with strike out ability.

  • Not sure who's getting the nod for the Mets. My guess is that it's Matz -- regardless both are in play. I just didn't want to write someone up who is not pitching

  • I just can't stomach Pineda pitching at all, let alone in Yankees Stadium... all it will take is the leadoff hitter getting on base and he will unravel.

    • Yeah his LOB% over the last two seasons is atrocious which does point to some issues with pitching out of the stretch.

  • No love for my dude Adam Conley today vs the Twinkies? They kinda suck vs LHP an while he's definitely still young an inconsistent there's no denying he's got some good stuff when his command is there he's already flirted with a couple no-no bids an overall has pitched pretty admirably I'd think he has as much if not more upside here as any of these guys or am I missing something?

    • I agree Mike...I like Conley and Matz today. I wouldn't be afraid at all to stack against the guys listed here outside of maybe Ross.

  • Call me crazy but I got a got feeling on urias today. I've seen flashes of ace material. One of these games he's gonna see the order second time around and mow through them.

  • I love Conley today as well. Huge upside against the Twins.

And I was considering Rea, but I can't pull the trigger with him...

  • I think if Rea had any K upside at all he would be in play, but that is not the case.

  • No K upside on Conley with this matchup. He will give up walks and a few dingers and will get hit on. They favor dk lineups. He's gonna get ya 32ish on fd

  • Anyone know if FanDuel has issued any sort of Mets/Pirates games/stats not counting like DraftKings did? FanDuel currently showing the early game lineups but only has the second game selectable. Like they are showing McCutchen batting 2nd for the late game even though it's the first game lineup.. What a mess.

    • I'm mostly just glad to see that doubleheaders aren't just an issue for us. Everyone struggles. We have a tough time releasing projections for multiple games from the same team. I take solace knowing it's tough for the big boys too.
