Stacking in DFS MLB is such an important concept if you’re looking to take down a big tournament on FanDuel or DraftKings. It’s also a good way to diversify cash games because the variance in baseball can mean wild swings (ahem) in the scoring on a particular slate. The concept is easy. You want to pile players from one or two teams into your lineups because those guys compound scores by helping each other score runs when the going is good.

Stack Targets

All hitter stats provided are against the handedness of the pitcher they are facing

Early Slate

The San Francisco Giants vs. Aaron Blair

Kicking things off, we've got a short 3 game early slate to look at, and the stacking option that stands out to me the most is the Ginats vs. Aaron Blair. Blair is the lowest priced pitcher on the slate for a reason, as he's got some numbers that have to be considered poor at best. His biggest weakness comes when he faces left-handed pitching, where he's allowing a line of .320/.448/.489, an xFIP of 6.60 and he's walked 9 batters compared to recording only 3 strikeouts. To be honest his numbers against right-handed batters are pretty terrible as well so I would say that all Giant hitters are in play today. Our projection system really likes guys like Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, and Denard Span, but as I already mentioned you can really mix and match any combination of hitters to take advantage of this matchup. I'm not crazy about the ballpark factor and the fact that Bumgarner is the top pitcher on the slate makes this stack a little difficult to pull off, but I'd certainly get as many Giant bats in my early lineups today as possible.

Late Slate

The Coors Field Stack
I know this is getting kind of repetitive but it's almost like these teams are trying to throw pitchers out there who are going to get lit up. On the one hand, you've got Alfredo Simon pitching for the Reds who quite honestly is the worst statistical pitcher in the major leagues right now (9.60 ERA, 5.45 xFIP, 4.99 SIERA, I mean the list goes on and on). Take my word for it, loading up on Rockies hitters today is going to be a great stacking option, particularly left-handed batters like Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon and Gerardo Parra (although Simon is a special kind of bad so all Rockies bats are on the table). I don't like the stack against Butler as much as against Simon, but you can certainly go that way due to Butler's struggles pitching at home this season (6.57 ERA, .355 wOBA, and a soft hit % of 5%, which is utterly ridiculous I might add). A stack against Butler should consist of the Reds big left-handed bats (Joey Votto and Jay Bruce) along with guys who hit right-handed pitching well and are expected to hit near the top of the order (Brandon Phillips, Zack Cozart and a resurgent Billy Hamilton are good options).

The Boston Red Sox vs. Ubaldo Jimenez

Something tells me that 80% or higher of all stacks tonight are going to come from Coors Field and Camden Yards, so just to cover my all of my basis you should consider a Red Sox stack tonight. They draw a great matchup tonight in Jimenez who has seen his ERA rise nearly 2 runs in the past month, and who seems to have lost command of the strike zone (3+ BB in each of his last 4 starts, none of which lasted longer than 5 innings). Jimenez is reeling right now, and I can't imagine a better time to stack the best offense in baseball against him. Of course I want to get as many lefties in this lineup to take advantage of Jimenez's struggles (.408 wOBA allowed for the season), so guys like David Ortiz (.480 wOBA), Travis Shaw (.401 wOBA), Mookie Betts (I know he's a righty but he's still got a .398 wOBA) and Jackie Bradley Jr. (.416 wOBA) come to mind. I don't like this as much as the Rockies stack, but it's certainly a close second, and if you can find a decent pitcher for cheap, I could see a Rockies/Sox stack making some big moves tonight.

The Pittsburg Pirates vs. Wei-Yin Chen

To be perfectly clear this stack is a distant second to the ones I mentioned above, but should have much lower ownership. The upside potential is definitely here, but not quite as much so as the Rockies and the Sox. But anyways, stacking right-handed Pirate bats against Wei-Yen Chen is still something to consider tonight. Chen has had his difficulties with righties this season to the tune of a .333 wOBA allowed, a 1.42 HR/9 rate, and a softly hit ball % of just 12.8%. The Pirates are one of the best teams around at hitting southpaws so even though the ballpark is not ideal, they've still got the ability to put up some big numbers. When looking at a Pirate stack, guys like David Freese (.479 wOBA), Andrew McCutchen (.414 wOBA for career), Starling Marte (.364 wOBA for career), Jung Ho Kang (.468 wOBA), and Josh Harrison (.399 wOBA) should be considered as all of these guys crush left-handed pitching. If you feel like going against the grain tonight, this is definitely the stack for you.
