Stacking in DFS MLB is such an important concept if you’re looking to take down a big tournament on FanDuel or DraftKings. It’s also a good way to diversify cash games because the variance in baseball can mean wild swings (ahem) in the scoring on a particular slate. The concept is easy. You want to pile players from one or two teams into your lineups because those guys compound scores by helping each other score runs when the going is good.
Stack Targets
(Hitter stats provided are vs. the handiness of the pitcher they are facing)
Early Slate
The Houston Astros vs. Patrick Corbin
We called for an Astros stack yesterday and boy did it pay off. The 'Stros find themselves in another nice lefty matchup with Patrick Corbin, who isn't terrible but is struggling mightily against right-handed batters. For the season against a right-handed split he's got a K/9 ratio of only 4.66, an xFIP of 4.65 and a wOBA of .343. Those are numbers we can certainly work with as far as stacks go, and the Astros are by far the best stacking option on the early slate. Again I'm targeting guys like Evan Gattis (.411 wOBA), Jose Altuve (.464 wOBA), Carlos Correa (.347 wOBA for his career), and George Springer (.405 wOBA). Each of these guys should be hitting near the middle or top of the order so look for each of them to see plenty of chances to put up some big numbers again (I know Gattis didn't play yesterday but he should be in the lineup today).
Late Slate
The Coors Field Stack
Might as well start here since anytime there are games being played at Coors there are stacks that can be used. Today the better stack to use is the Rockies going up against Jon Moscott, who is the not so proud owner of a career 5.74 xFIP. If that wasn't bad enough, he's actually walked more batters in his career than he's struck out (14 BB's to 12 K's) and is allowing nearly 2 HR's/9 for his career. His numbers have been pretty bad against both righties and lefties alike so pretty much anyone in the starting lineup for the Rockies is fair game today. Now Jon Gray is actually a pretty decent pitcher who's just had the misfortune of pitching in Coors field for the majority of his young career, but still something we can take advantage of in a stack. While I don't love the matchup nearly as much as the one against Moscott, guys like Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips and Zack Cozart are definitely in play today.
The St. Louis Cardinals vs. Wily Peralta
We briefly mentioned the Cards yesterday as a low ownership GPP stack and of course they went off. I expect much of the same today against Wily Peralta and I expect the ownership to be much, much higher. Nonetheless, this is a very affordable stack against one of the worst statistical pitcher in all of baseball. Peralta has been a steaming pile of garbage against lefties and righties alike this season, allowing a wOBA of .378 and .461 to left-handed batters and right-handed batters respectively. Combine that with the fact that he's allowing a hard hit % of 35% on the season and it becomes quite clear that Peralta should be stacked against every time he touches the mound. For the Cardinals, every position player who starts is in play today, but some of our favorites are Matt Holliday, Matt Carpenter, Yadier Molina, Scott Hazelbaker, and Almedys Diaz. The possibilities are endless today, but make sure you get a couple of Cardinals in your lineup tonight.
The Minnesota Twins vs. Eric Surkamp
This is certainly a more risky stack given the inconsistencies the Twins offense has experienced this season, but if you believe in the law of averages then this is certainly the stack for you. I'll get to that in a minute, but let's profile Eric Surkamp real quick. Because this is a family oriented website (I think) I'll put it nicely. Eric Surkamp really doesn't belong in the Major Leagues, and it's honestly only a matter of time before he's demoted. For his career, the guy has an xFIP of 6.87, he's walked more batters than he's struck out (14 BB's to 12 K's again which is bizarre but anywho), and he's only producing a GB % of 28.6% (which means hitters are elevating the ball a lot, which equals bad news for Surkamp). Now I realize that some of the Twins hitters who normally destroy left-handed pitching have struggled this season (looking at you Brian Dozier and Trevor Plouffe), but these poor numbers can't possibly continue. To me this is an excellent buy low opportunity for those two guys, and paired with Miguel Sano and Eduardo Nunez, could make for an interesting stack that should have pretty low ownership. Strictly a GPP stack in my opinion, but one worth considering for sure.
Note: Don't like these options as much as the above stacks, but you can always consider loading up on right-handed Toronto sluggers against C.C. Sabathia, and the same thing goes for right-handed bats from Baltimore against Eduardo Rodriguez.
