Pitching Targets

Note: We discussed Clayton Kershaw, Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi and Taijuan Walker in the picks article for today. And will be going over a few more options below.

Julio Teheran FD 8500 DK 9900
Opponent - MIA (Koehler) Park - @ATL
FD - 33.12 DK - 18.09

Teheran was put on Earth primarily to give me nightmares in the keeper league where I've had him since he was literally 17 years old. But! There are signs of life this season. The Ks are up, the BBs are down, and his 3.45 FIP is around where it was during his solid 2014 campaign. It's been 15 innings since his last walk allowed, and he struck out 12 in 7 innings against the Brewers in his last game out there. Oh, I didn't mention that he'll be facing one of the league's true bums in Tom Koehler, whose 5.14 xFIP would be good for 5th worst in the league if he could have managed to stay on the mound for enough innings to qualify.

So, all roses? Not exactly. The Braves are still dogs in this game because they are just awful, having plated the fewest runs in the majors. And the Marlins, for all of their flaws, are not bad against right handed pitching. Teheran has electric upside here if things break right, but they could of course go wrong as well. Still, he's a phenomenal tournament option.

Jimmy Nelson FD 7600 DK 9400
Opponent - CIN (Finnegan) Park - @MIL
FD - 32.5 DK - 18.1

So let's get one thing straight - Jimmy Nelson is just not a sub 3 ERA pitcher. At least not when it comes to his true talent level. He's running super hot on BABIP allowed this year (allowing just a .244 figure as compared to his .285 figure last year). So, I get it. But today represents sort of a sneaky day to take him. First of all, he's up against a Reds team that has been decidedly awful against right handed pitching this season. They've amassed the 2nd worst wOBA against right handed pitching this year, and paired that with the league's 5th highest K rate. They're also trotting out Brandon Finnegan, who's struggled greatly when it comes to both striking batters out and not walking them. Nelson, meanwhile, has averaged 36 FanDuel fantasy points per game in his last 3 games in spite of not recording a win. The Brewers are a -140 favorite here, making a win more likely than usual for him. It's obviously just a punt play, but it's an intriguing one.

Rich Hill FD 9600 DK 10500
Opponent - DET (Pelfrey) Park - @OAK
FD - 36.38 DK - 20.63

Does it seem insane to even through out there that we can consider a left handed pitching against the murderer's row the Tigers trot out there from night to night? Well, probably. But there is some interesting stuff here. While the Tigers have a ton of lefty-crushing righties in their lineup, they've actually struck out at an above average rate and posted a below average wOBA against left handed pitching this season. They're also going into an extreme pitcher's park, and trotting out another of the league's worst starters in Mike Pelfrey, whose 14 fantasy points per game rank him below several hitters on today's slate.

Hill, meanwhile, is absolutely capable of a K+ per inning, and his solid control means he can occasionally go long into games. I think if I were punting I'd prefer to go a little cheaper, but you can get incredible separation on Hill for your GPPs here.
