Stacking in DFS MLB is such an important concept if you’re looking to take down a big tournament on FanDuel or DraftKings. It’s also a good way to diversify cash games because the variance in baseball can mean wild swings (ahem) in the scoring on a particular slate. The concept is easy. You want to pile players from one or two teams into your lineups because those guys compound scores by helping each other score runs when the going is good.
Stack Targets
Early slate
Note - I won't waste your time with a Coors Field write up as both teams make terrific stacking options in a game with an 11 over/under. My preference and the systems is the Diamondbacks who come in a bit cheaper across the board.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Phil Hughes(MIN)
I talked about Sano and Park for the Twins in the main article and can see them being a decent middle of the order stacking option. On the other side of the ball there is another opportunity for a high scoring stack in the Orioles hitters going up against Phil Hughes. It has been a rough start to the season for Hughes who has given up three or more earned runs in five of his six starts and giving up a home run in four of those starts. Things have even gotten worse lately as he has given up 10 earned runs in his last two starts while only striking out three batters. He has given up a .327 wOBA against to RH batters and a .365 wOBA to LH batters putting the majority of the O's lineup in play(Rickard, Machado, Davis, Jones are my favorites).
Evening Slate
New York Yankees vs. Yordano Ventura(KC)
The Yankees bats are starting to wake up after a very slow start as they try to climb out of the basement of the American League East. They have now won five of their last seven games scoring six or more runs four times. They are in a great spot on Wednesday night to win a third straight game vs. the defending champs as they will be going up against struggling Yordano Ventura. He is currently working with a walk rate above 7 batters per nine which is starting to take it s toll on his other numbers. After going four straight starts to open the season without giving up more than two earned runs he has now gone back to back starts giving up five earned. In those two starts he has only struck out four batters while walking 11. He struggles more against LH bats(.3332 wOBA against) than RH bats(.297 wOBA against) which could be trouble today as the Yankees can throw out a lineup of six or seven left handed bats. It won't cost you a premium to stack the Yankees either as Brett Gardner is the most expensive option on both sites($3,900 on DK and $3,400 on FD).
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Wei-Yin Chen(MIA)
I normally consider Wei-Yin Chen as a cash game option at pitcher but not tonight against the Brewers who historically kill left handed pitching. Chen has actually struggled vs. both right handed and left handed bats giving up a .337 wOBA to LH and a .315 wOBA to RH batters. All five of his home runs he has given up this year have come against right handed bats. The Brewers, like the Yankees, are a team trying to climb out of the basement in their division and have started to turn things around. They have won three of their last four games outscoring opponents 29-17 in the process. You can go a few different routes when constructing your stack and grab the top of the order(Villar, Perez, Braun, Lucroy) or middle of the order(Braun, Lucroy, Carter, Hill) or mix and match as there are some cheap options(Hernan Perez, Alex Presley) to help you pay up for some other big bats. No matter which way you stack them make sure to make Ryan Braun the center of your stack as he has the most upside vs. LH pitching.
