Wells Fargo Championship
Quail Hollow Club - Charlotte, NC
Par 72 - 7,562 Yards
The Zurich Classic is finally over and I am ready to put it in the past and move on. Brian Stuard won in a playoff over Jamie Lovemark for his first career win. Jason Day who was the most expensive golfer last week was lurking on the leaderboard and really could have used that final 18 holes to catch the leaders. The big shocker of the weekend was the missed cut by Justin Rose. After coming in as the defending champ with excellent course history and form and well...shit the bed. Ok enough of the Zurich Classic let's move on.
This week the PGA Tour travels to Charlotte, North Carolina for the 2016 Wells Fargo Championship. The course this week is the Quail Hollow Golf Club which is a Par 72 that comes with some length at 7,562 yards. It also has the toughest three hole closing stretch on tour. The "Green Mile" consists of the Par 4, 16th hole(508 yards), the Par 3, 17th hole(221 yards), and the Par 4, 18th hole(493 yards). The course is long overall with three of the Par 3 holes over 200 yards, four of the par 4 holes over 480 yards, and three of the Par 5 holes over 570 yards. This makes driving distance my #1 key stat this week alongside Strokes Gained Tee to Green. Length will be a huge advantage on the long Par 4's and also the par 5's where the majority of the scoring will be done. Not to say your "accuracy guys" can't succeed here but the margin for error is very slim. Jim Furyk does well here cause he is very accurate on his approach stats, has good long irons, scrambles well and avoids bogeys. If you lack distance you need to be locked in all other parts of your game for four straight days. Another stat I am looking at closely is Par 5 scoring and long iron Proximity. Below is a list of the key stats that are weighted on my cheatsheet this week.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green
- Driving Distance
- Greens in Regulation
- Par 4 Scoring Average
- Par 5 Scoring Average
- Birdie or Better %
- Bogey Avoidance
- Strokes Gained: Putting

High End Targets ($9,000+)
Rickie Fowler
Vegas Odds - 16/1
Draftkings - $10,900
Fantasy Aces - $5,850
After his holiday with the boys, Rickie played pretty good at the Zurich Classic finishing with a T20 in the rain shortened event. He got stronger as the tournament went on and finished with a 67 on Monday. He is back at it again this week as he gets ready to defend his PLAYERS title next week. He took this tournament off last year but has made the cut in each of his five trips to Quail Hollow including winning the event back in 2012. He hits on all of the key stats this week outside of Proximity from 200+ but with his length off the tee could be seeing more approaches from the 175-200 range where ranks 29th. He makes a nice pivot off defending champ Rory McIlroy who is nearly $2K more on DraftKings.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 6
- Driving Distance - 36
- Greens in Regulation - 5
- Par 5 Scoring Average - 3
- Birdie or Better % - 8
- Bogey Avoidance - 1
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 22
Patrick Reed
Vegas Odds - 28/1
Draftkings - $9,700
Fantasy Aces - $5,500
He is back after a runner up finish to Charley Hoffman at the Valero Texas Open. It was his second runner up finish of the year and 8th Top 10 finish in 13 events played which leads the PGA Tour. He can bomb the ball, is Top 60 in Proximity from 200+, ranks Top 40 in both Par 4 and 5 scoring and is excellent on Par 3's which could help him gain a few extra strokes on the field this week on the very tough Par 3's. He hasn't broke through here in Charlotte yet as he has made the cut in all three trips but hasn't finished better 32nd place. Fire up the Top 10 machine and expect him to pick up a career best finish here at the Quail Hollow Club.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 13
- Driving Distance - 61
- Greens in Regulation - 103
- Par 5 Scoring Average - 31
- Birdie or Better % - 45
- Bogey Avoidance - 6
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 158
Hideki Matsuyama
Vegas Odds - 25/1
Draftkings - $9,300
Fantasy Aces - $5,650
He ranks 3rd in my overall model this week as he checks off all the boxes(Stats, Form, History). He not only fits the stats model he is elite in most of the key stats I am looking at(SG:T2G, GIR, Prox 200+, Prox 175-200, Par 4 Scor, Par 5 Scor, BoB). His Strokes Gained Putting is ranked quite low(156) but he mostly struggles from inside 10 feet. He is a much better putter from 10-20 feet where a lot of putts will be coming from this week. He has improved each year here as he finished T38 in 2014 and followed that up with a T20 last season. He is having a very good season to this point as he has already picked up a win back at the Waste Management Phoenix Open with seven total Top 25 finishes. He will be a golfer that will be in the mix on Sunday and comes at a very affordable price.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 5
- Driving Distance - 61
- Greens in Regulation - 12
- Par 5 Scoring Average - 16
- Birdie or Better % - 3
- Bogey Avoidance - 39
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 156
Also Consider - Henrik Stenson, Phil Mickelson(GPP)
Mid Tier Targets ($7,000 - $9,000)
Daniel Berger
Vegas Odds - 40/1
Draftkings - $8,400
Fantasy Aces - $4,750
It's Berger time this week in Charlotte. With a much stronger field his salary has dropped from $10,100 at the Zurich Classic back down to the mid $8K range for the Wells Fargo this week. This is his happy zone and he makes a terrific play in any format this week. He is a bomber who is very accurate with his long irons and he scores on the Par 4's and 5's. He is only ranked 88th in Par 5 scoring so far in 2016 but looking back to last season he ranked 13th. He is coming in with terrific form with a T20 last week, T10 at the Masters and a T5 at the Shell Houston Open.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 46
- Driving Distance - 25
- Greens in Regulation - 66
- Par 5 Scoring Average - 88
- Birdie or Better % - 36
- Bogey Avoidance - 52
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 81
Charles Howell III
Vegas Odds - 80/1
Draftkings - $8,100
Fantasy Aces - $5,250
The cut making machine himself. He has made 15 of 16 cuts so far in 2016 and has been one of the best cash game plays every time he tees it up. He is another long hitter who hits a ton of greens but struggles a bit with his long irons. It doesn't affect his scoring averages though, as he ranks 16th on Par 5's and 11th on the Par 4's this year. He ranks Top 40 in BoB% and is elite(3rd) in Bogey Avoidance. He is once again one of the top cash game plays of the week.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 35
- Driving Distance - 18
- Greens in Regulation - 38
- Par 5 Scoring Average - 16
- Birdie or Better % - 39
- Bogey Avoidance - 3
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 60
Justin Thomas
Vegas Odds - 50/1
Draftkings - $8,000
Fantasy Aces - $4,600
He is back to make his second start at the Wells Fargo Championship and had an excellent T7 finish last year. His form isn't top notch as he is coming off a disappointing 75th place finish at the RBC Heritage but should be re charged after his getaway with Fowler, Spieth and Kaufman. He is another bomber with excellent long iron accuracy and he absolutely crushes the Par 5's. He has made 12 of 14 cuts this season with a his first career win back at the CIMB Classic and also has three Top 10's and five Top 25 finishes. He makes an excellent GPP play this week with a very affordable price tag.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 78
- Driving Distance - 28
- Greens in Regulation - 69
- Par 5 Scoring Average - 12
- Birdie or Better % - 23
- Bogey Avoidance - 128
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 145
Also Consider - Kevin Chappell, Webb Simpson
Low End Target (Min Price - $6,900)
Shawn Stefani
Vegas Odds - 200/1
Draftkings - $6,600
Fantasy Aces - $4,200
If you look solely at 2016 stats this week you are probably thinking I am crazy to mention Stefani this week. He is definitely a GPP only play this week as he has missed nine cuts in 15 tournaments this year but things have started to turn around lately. He finished T29 at the Valero Texas Open and 32nd the week before at the RBC Heritage. He is also coming back to Charlotte with some nice course history as he has made the cut in all three trips to Quail Hollow with a T27 in 2013, T44 in 2014 and an impressive T9 last season. Take a flyer with Stefani this week.
- Strokes Gained: Tee to Green - 123
- Driving Distance - 67
- Greens in Regulation - 129
- Par 5 Scoring Average - 97
- Birdie or Better % - 192
- Bogey Avoidance - 151
- Strokes Gained: Putting - 200
Also Consider - Francesco Molinari, John Senden
