Daily Fantasy Basketball Injury News and Updates for FanDuel and DraftKings - 3/17/16

Welcome to the daily updates and injury news article. We'll try and update it right up to line-up locks with as much information as comes across our desks. Let's get to it!

Last night's picks can be found here, so you can wrap your mind around what you need to be looking at before lineups lock tonight.

By the way - we keep our projection system updated with all of the changes as they occur throughout the day right up until lineup lock. Every day. If you want access to that system so you can cut out a lot of the research element, click the button below!

What We Know

Robert Covington and Jerami Grant will sit again
Both are still recovering from when the former accidentally kicked the latter last week. With them on the shelf the Sixers have turned more minutes to Hollis Thompson and Carl Landry. Landry's played less minutes than Hollis but has averaged a 14/8 in the last three games. Thompson is more dependent on the three ball falling which has led to some erratic performances. But both make nice plays for their respective prices today.

Pau Gasol and Taj Gibson are extremely doubtful to play
This will almost assuredly open up significant minutes for Bobby Portis and Nikola Mirotic. Though it's a little scary on the latter as he only played 24 minutes last night even when Taj went down early. Doug McDermott has also seen a minutes bump of late though it's a little tough to know how much of that was A: Rose being out against Toronto and the blowout last night. I'd put Portis near the top of the value plays today no matter what.

What We're Waiting to Know

Will Jonas Valanciunas play?
This is one of the more important pieces of news on the day. And it isn't necessarily for Jonas. If he were to sit then we'd be looking at another run for Bismack Biyombo in the mid-to-high 20's. Last game when Biyombo started he went 12/13 on his way to completely crushing his min salary. The price has come up a little, but center is rough today and I think you'd easily play him if he were drawing the start again.

Will Zach Randolph play?
He's been ruled out well in advance of every game since he got injured which makes me think he's more than a little doubtful for this affair. It impact fantasy in that JaMychal Green's seen many more minutes over the last couple of weeks, but the price has risen almost out of the point of value. Even if Z-Bo came back I think you'd see him on a minutes restriction.

Will Gordon Hayward play?
He sat out last game with some foot issues. Joe Ingles came in, started, played 37 minutes and barely piad value. But we did see Derrick Favors, Shelvin Mack and Rodney Hood distribute those Hayward shots. This is a good one to keep an eye on.

Will Ian Mahimni play?
I'm less inclined to play Mahimni than I would be to play Myles Turner or Jordan Hill were one of them to draw the start in his place.

The "Every Lineup" Guys

John Wall - FD 9400 DK 9800
Opponent - PHI
FD Proj. Pts - 45.03 DK Proj. Pts - 46.25
Though it's early in the day, I don't suspect this changes much. He has a great matchup against Philly who's allowed more than league average scoring to opposing point guards this season. There's no early line on this game yet though neither team is very good. I like Wall getting out in the open court here and fitting the salary is no big deal on the medium-sized Thursday slate.

Bobby Portis - FD 3800 DK 3900
Opponent - BKN
FD Proj. Pts - 22.12 DK Proj. Pts - 22.72
The aformentioned Portis would be a fantastic play today if you thought he was going to see somewhere around 25 minutes. That's entirely possible considering almost the entirety of the Bulls' frontcourt is hurt right now. I don't think he'd draw the start (though he might) but still stands to see a high floor in run.

A note on Giannis Antetokounmpo: He will probably be a heavy chalk play today following the amazing game last time out and the run he's been on. We've full accounted (we believe) for his recent shift in offense role and how the Bucks' system is running through him right now. Even with significant usage, rebound,  and assist expectation bumps he's still very expensive. I'm not saying don't play him (he did show up in iteration 10 or so on FD), but he's not exactly a lock at these prices.

Good luck out there today! If you want access to all of our numbers, get started with a free trial of our lineup optimizer!

  • i think you hit it right on the head with Antetokounmpo i honestly think tonight is a horrible night to pick him up i see him only putting up mid 30's in fantasy points tonight i honestly think MEM is great at shutting down a guy like him

    • I think his is a must play of you want to spend up. Reason being is MEM is banged up and is basically running a d-league team. Gianna's should destroy them. If the can keep it somewhat close his is going to be the pick of the night.

    • Nice. I expected some possible backlash on that Giannis note because he's had such a high ceiling.

  • also what do you think abot Luol Deng tonight he's quietly been on a tear

    • They will have very little in the way of resistance in the blocks for sure.

  • Yeah I'm not on ABC with Leonard & PG13 having good match ups & Barnes and Tony Allen are descent defenders. The Wiz & Philly game might be close due to how horrible they are on back to backs. Would you go Hill, Biyombo, or Plumlee since they might all start?

  • While Ante may not go banana sandwhich vs MEM scoring wise, i think this matchup lend him to still hit 4.5x value through Rebounds/Blocks/Steals. The likes of the MEM offense (minus conley/gasol) makes me think he will stuff the sheet tonight. maybe not blow up in one catagory, but a 15/10/7/2/1 type line still hits 40+ on DK. I running 2 DK lineups tonight (both with Wall and portis for sure) but he is definitely in one of them.

    • Very true, MEM doesn't have a true rebounder where he could dominate. I could see Middleton leading in scoring.

  • Biyambo is must start is Jonas is out. If Jonas is playing, go with Hill. Stephenson or Bazemore is where I'm hesitating. Mirotic killed me yesterday, can I trust him tonight?

  • Do we care about Mahinmi being out? Does will it change any projects for Turner or Hill?

    • I would give them both upticks in minutes. Hill would become real interesting if you thought he was going to play 25 minutes or more. And would make a logical replacement for Biyombo if the latter weren't starting.

  • My 2 lineups on DK
    both used in tourney
lineup on left is tourney only, lineup on right used in Double up as well
    Weber- Weber
    Thompson- Beal
    Ante- PG13
    Young- Millsap
    Horford - Horford
    Wall - Wall
    Portis - Portis
    Mack- Turner

  • Valanciunas is doubtful. Which cheap Center do you recommend assuming they both start?

    Hill or Bim

  • All I know is that Mirotic sucks. I will never put him in my lineups again.
